  3. XV.  The Gifts of Healing.
  4.  
  5. A.   Definition.
  6.  
  7.      The gift of healing is the God-given ability to impart healing
  8.      to the physical body at specific times.  It is accompanied by
  9.      a measure of the gift of faith and, often, the gift of
  10.      knowledge.  It involves the impartation of that faith to one
  11.      who needs healing, lifting him out of the realm of doubt and
  12.      unbelief, and taking appropriate steps toward healing.  It is
  13.      a "manifestation of the Spirit" through a person and not just
  14.      his own soulish powers of persuasion.

  16. B.   Why is it the "gifts of healing" (plural), instead of the"gift
  17.      of healing" (singular):
  18.  
  19.      We notice that in each case where healing is referred to as a
  20.      gift of the Spirit in body ministry, it is always in the
  21.      plural form.

  23.      --l Corinthians 12:9 "Gifts of healing...."
  24.  
  25.      --l Corinthians 12:28 Gifts of healings..."
  26.  
  27.      --l Corinthians 12:30 "Gifts of healing... "
  28.  
  29.      It is a matter of observation that in the Body of Christ one
  30.      person may be used to bring healing in a specialised area. 
  31.      For example, one person may have faith for the healing of
  32.      blindness, another deafness, another cancer, etc.
  33.  
  34. C.   What levels of healings do we see in the Scriptures?
  35.  
  36.      1.   Instantaneous - Some healings are of a simple physical
  37.           nature and the necessary wack of the Holy Spirit can be
  38.           done immediately.
  39.  
  40.           --Matthew 8:3 - "And Jesus put forth His hand, and
  41.           touched him, saying "I.will, be thou clean," And
  42.           immediately, his leprosy was cleansed."
  43.  
  44.           --Mark 1:31 - Speaking of Peter's mother-in-law: "And He
  45.           came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and
  46.           immediately the fever left,her, and she ministered unto
  47.           them."
  48.  
  49.      2.   Gradual - It might be said that man has three main areas
  50.           which need healing or divine health and soundness: the
  51.           spirit, the soul, and the body.
  52.  
  53.           There may be cases where the body is sick because of
  54.           inner sickness of the soul or spirit.  The Lord may
  55.           choose to heal by healing the attitude of the heart, with
  56.           physical healing becoming gradually evident as the inner
  57.           problem is solved.  Therefore, it may often be necessary
  58.           for a person with a gift of healing to also have the
  59.           gifts of discernment and knowledge in order to understand
  60.           the dealings of God in each life.

  62.           James 5:14-16 - implies that there may be a connection
  63.           between sin and sickness; that a part of healing is to
  64.           confess these faults.
  65.  
  66.           3 John 2 also shows this correlation: "I wish above all
  67.           things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as
  68.           thy soul prospereth."
  69.  
  70.           (See also Isaiah 1:5; Jeremiah 8:22; Mark 2:17; Psalm
  71.           41:4; Isaiah 53:5; Luke 4:18)

  73.      D.    Through what method did healing operate in the
  74.           Scripture?
  75.  
  76.      1.   Calling of the elders and anointing with oil. 
  77.           James 5:14-15; Mark 6:13.
  78.  
  79.      2.   The communion - 1-Corinthians 11:27-34 - The clear
  80.           implication is that there is a level of healing in the
  81.           proper discernment of the Body of Christ which is not
  82.           available from any other source.  As believers enter into
  83.           harmony and unity, love and proper Relationship with each
  84.           other.
  85.  
  86.      3.   Laying on of hands and prayer by believers in general.
  87.           Mark 16:16-18; Matthew 19:19 - God has not limited His
  88.           provisions to one means or through only certain people.
  89.           He will use whomsoever is available and will believe 
  90.           Him. All believers have as their prerogative to believe
  91.           God's Word and pray for the sick.
  92.  
  93.      4.   By the spoken word - Luke 7:1-10 - The greatest faith,
  94.           according to Jesus, rests solely in the "Word".  There
  95.           were three kinds of people that came to Jesus for
  96.           healing.
  97.  
  98.           a.   Those who came for healing personally.
  99.           b.   Those who brought someone else for healing.
  100.           c.   Those who came for someone else, and sought only
  101.                the word of Jesus stating they would be healed:
  102.                they saw no barrier in time and space.
  103.  
  104.           Jesus said that this third level was the greatest level
  105.           of faith.  This does not mean, however, that the other
  106.           methods are not valid.  There is a real ministry in
  107.           "bringing the sick" to those who have faith, and at
  108.           times, there may be a real need to "call for the elders."
  109.           One should seek to grow in faith while not boasting of
  110.           things "without his measure."
  111.  
  112.      5.   Jesus's garments; Peter's shadow - Mark 6:56 - "As many
  113.           as touched Him were made whole.- Acts 5:15-16.
  114.  
  115.           These formed a "point of contact" for the one in need. 
  116.           Jesus even used the principle of a "point of contact," or
  117.           required from the sick person sore "act of appropriation"
  118.           in order to express his faith and receive.  "Take up thy
  119.           bed and walk." "Go wash in the pool of Siloam.
  120.  
  121.           Such pressing in to touch Jesus and the apostles would
  122.           indicate faith on the part of the sick.  It is on the
  123.           basis of faith that all are healed.  Faith underlies the
  124.           entire truth of healing.  Faith is required from the one
  125.           in need and the one praying and even from those who bring
  126.           the sick person. ("Seeing their faith..." Matthew 9:2.)

  128.      6.   Handkerchiefs and aprons from Paul-Acts 19:11 - 12.
  129.           "And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
  130.           so that from his body were brought unto the sick
  131.           handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from
  132.           them, and the evil spirits went out of them."
  133.  
  134.           Notice, that these are called "special Miracles."       
  135.           Incidents of this type have happened even in modern days,
  136.           but they are not the norm.  They were done this way
  137.           because there was no other way for Paul to contact them,
  138.  
  139. E.   How does a person know it he or she has the gifts of healing?
  140.  
  141.      1.   By the inner witness of the Spirit.  Our gifts and
  142.           calling become as our second nature:
  143.  
  144.      2.   By the ability to believe God for Physical healing.  Paul
  145.           taught in Romans 12:3-8 that we each have different
  146.           spiritual abilities and grace levels given us by the
  147.           Lord, With each function comes a proportionate "measure
  148.           of faith" (vs. 3) to see God accomplish His work.
  149.  
  150.           This can also be seen in 1 Corinthians 12:27-31.  The
  151.           very fact that we have a variety fo functions indicates
  152.           we have varying faith channelled in various direction.
  153.  
  154.      3.   Through great compassion for the sick and afflicted. 
  155.           They will be a constant and deep concern on one's heart. 
  156.           And not only a concern, but a desire also to 'do
  157.           something about it.  There will be a mobility and a
  158.           strength of faith behind this compassion.
  159.  
  160.           --Matthew 20:34 - compassion on two blind men.
  161.  
  162.           --Mark 1:41 - compassion on the leper.
  163.  
  164.           --Luke 7:12-14 - compassion on the widow; raised her dead
  165.           son.
  166.  
  167.      4.   By results.  The test of any ministry or gift is the
  168.           fruit it bears.  If one has the gifts of healing, then
  169.           people will be healed.  Of course, the results will
  170.           develop and increase with the spiritual growth of the
  171.           person having the gift.

  173. F.     What is the purpose of the gifts of healing?
  174.  
  175.      1.   God loves His people and wants them to be in good health,
  176.           referring to total health: body soul, and spirit.  God so
  177.           loved that He "gave".  There is no end to what God
  178.           desires to give us as an inheritance in the Kingdom. (3
  179.           John 2:4)
  180.  
  181.      2.   Divine health and healing are aspects of the rectifying
  182.           of the curse of the,law.
  183.  
  184.           --l John 3:8 - "For this purpose the Son of God was
  185.           manifested, that He might destroy the works of the
  186.           Devil".
  187.  
  188.           --Galatians 3:13 - "Christ hath redeemed us from the
  189.           curse of the law, being made a curse for us, for it is
  190.           written, curse is everyone that hangeth on a tree."
  191.  
  192.           Redemption involves bringing man totally out of the
  193.           effects of the curses involved in the law, which included
  194.           sickness and disease.  Man should not have to bear
  195.           sickness if he accepts all the provision made for him in
  196.           the New Covenant.  It is an integral part of the New
  197.           Covenant blessing.
  198.  
  199.      3.   It was designed to confirm our message with signs and
  200.           wonders. (Hebrews 2:3-4) It was a part of the great
  201.           commission. (Mark 16:15-20)
  202.  
  203.           --John 5:36 - "...the same works that I do, bear witness
  204.           of me, that the Father hath sent me."
  205.  
  206.  G.  On what basis are believers healed?
  207.  
  208.      1.   Redemption - That physical healing, as well as spiritual
  209.           healing, was included in the atoning work of Christ is
  210.           brought out constantly by both Old Testament and New
  211.           Testament Scripture.  Note these statements in regard to
  212.           the deliverance of Israel from Egypt:
  213.  
  214.           --Exodus 15:25-26 - "There He made for them a statue and
  215.           an ordinance, and there He proved them, and said, if thou
  216.           wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God,
  217.           and wilt do that which is right in His sight, and wilt
  218.           give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes,
  219.           I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have
  220.           brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord thy God
  221.           which healeth thee".

  223.           This Was an actual part of  God's  covenant  with 
  224.           Israel. Sickness belonged to the Egyptians  (sinners), 
  225.           not to God's people who knew His delivering power and
  226.           walked in covenant with Him.
  227.  
  228.           --Psalms 105.37 - "He brought them forth also with silver
  229.           and gold and there was not on feeble person among their
  230.           tribes."
  231.  
  232.           --Psalms 103:2-3  "...forgiveth all thine iniquities, who 
  233.           healeth all thy disease."
  234.  
  235.           --Isaiah 53:4-5 - "Surely He hath borne our sickness and
  236.           carried our sorrows ..."
  237.  
  238.           --Matthew 8:16-17 - "He healed all that were sick: that
  239.           it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the
  240.           prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bare
  241.           our sicknesses."
  242.  
  243.           --3 John 2 -"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou
  244.           mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul
  245.           prospereth."
  246.  
  247.      2.   Faith - Jesus ministered to people according to their
  248.           faith.  He often said, "According to thy faith so be it
  249.           unto thee," or some similar statement.
  250.  
  251.           --2 Corinthians 5:7 - "We walk by faith, not by sight."
  252.  
  253.           This means we agree with the Word, accept it unto our
  254.           personal lives, and act upon it.
  255.  
  256.           --Mark 11:24 - "Therefore I say unto you, what things
  257.           soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive
  258.           them, and ye shall have them."
  259.
