  5. INTRODUCTION

  7. The major treatment of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit is found in 
  8. 1 Cor 12:14.  Many other references and examples are included in
  9. the Word of God but this is the only place where the subject is
  10. dealt with in detail, and then with almost exclusive emphasis upon
  11. the Gifts of Prophecy, Tongues and Interpretation.  This is due to
  12. the abuses of these Gift which occurred in the Corinthian
  13. assembly.  Paul intend us to profit by their mistakes.

  52.      There are many types of Gifts referred to in scripture which
  53.      ought not to be confused with those which are exclusively the
  54.      Gifts of the Spirit.

  72.      Rom. 12:4-8 lists various functions which are not included
  73.      with the Gifts of the Spirit (except for prophecy) but are
  74.      rather the basic functions of the church, but which are still
  75.      bestowed of God. (i.e. not all have a ministry in ruling, or
  76.      giving, or exhortation, etc.

  78. D.   The "More Excellent Way."                   (Manifestation)
  79.  
  80.      Numerous opponents of Pentecostal truth have advanced the
  81.      idea that "love is the greatest gift and cancels out the need
  82.      for the nine gifts listed in 1 Cor. 12:7-12.  They use the
  83.      scripture in l Cor. 12:31, "I show unto you a more excellent
  84.      way", which is outlined in I Cor. 13- the Chapter of Love.
  85.  
  86.      The Basic Mistake that they make is that love is NOT a Gift
  87.      it is the fruit of the Spirit.  Gal 5:22-23.  Paul is not
  88.      elevating love above Gifts but showing that Gifts and Fruit
  89.      are essential to the proper operation of each other.
  90.  
  91.      The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are bestowed specifically on
  92.      individuals I Cor, 12:7-12, and any study of the Gifts of the
  93.      Spirit presupposes the fact that He has and does endow men
  94.      and women with supernatural powers to work supernatural
  95.      miracles of which the following texts bear adequate witness
  96.      Mk, 16;17-18; Acts 1:8; 2:4; 4:29-31; 5:12; 6:8; Heb. 1:4.

  98.  2.  PURPOSE OF THE GIFTS.
  99.  
  100.      A.   Body Ministry.
  101.  
  102.      1 Cor. 12:12-27 very clearly sets out the Major reason for
  103.      the diverse Gifts of the Spirit being distributed to the
  104.      total strata of the Church.  It is so that the assembly can
  105.      function as does a body - each part having importance,
  106.      interdependence and special significance.  Each Gift is
  107.      essential each person is valued.  None can be done without. 
  108.      The true church pattern is not to have a group of people
  109.      being ministered to by an elite minority (ministers), but to
  110.      have the whole group, both congregation and preachers,
  111.      ministering to and for the Lord with supernatural endowment.
  112.  
  113.      B.   A Spiritual Ministry.
  114.  
  115.      Without the anointing of the Spirit enabling the Church to
  116.      minister in fashion, the Gospel would be largely in the realm
  117.      of philosophy and ceremonials; - the ministry of Jesus and
  118.      the first apostles does hot fit in either category.  They
  119.      demonstrated the power of God, without reference to their
  120.      natural ability or lack of it.  Note. l Cor. 12:7
  121.  
  122.      C.   The Manifestation of Deity. 
  123.  
  124.      In 1 Cor 12:7, we note the word "manifestation" from the Gk. 
  125.      "Phanerosis" meaning a shining forth.  In the Gifts of the
  126.      Spirit we have a literal expression of Deity through men. 
  127.      God shines forth through them.  The Gift divide into groups
  128.      which reveal the attributes of God.
  129.  
  130.      a)   Wisdom, Knowledge, Discerning of Spirits
  131.                   - OMNISCIENCE   - LIGHT - PURPOSE.
  132.      b)   Faith, Healing, Miracles 
  133.                  - OMNIPOTENCE   - LIFE  - POWER.
  134.      c)   Prophecy, Tongues, Interpretation 
  135.                  - OMNIPRESENCE  - LOVE  - PRESENCE.  
  136.      Thus bringing to us a revelation of the Purpose, Power and
  137.      Presence of God, which is totally beyond the capacity of man
  138.      to manufacture.
  139.  
  140.      These Gifts, it has been observed, also express the essential
  141.      characteristics of God.
  142.  
  143.                     (a)  The diffusion of the Divine Light.
  144.                     (b)  The demonstration of the Divine Life.
  145.                     (c)  The demonstration of Divine Love.
  146.  
  147.      Through these Gifts, God thus makes Himself apparent.
  148.  
  149.      Harold Horton notes that "As children of God, we are
  150.      partakers - now - of His mighty, miraculous supernature. 2
  151.      Pet.1:4; 1 John 3:2 The message of the whole scripture is
  152.      that this miraculous supernature of God should be manifest in
  153.      His children.  Like Father, like Son.  And God has make full
  154.      provision for the manifestation of that supernature in the
  155.      Gifts of the Holy Spirit.  We are sons and daughters of
  156.      Omniscience an Omnipotence as well as of Infinite Holiness
  157.      and Endless life.
  158.  
  159.      It was not a theological claim that arrested the devout Jews
  160.      on that memorable day, but a manifestation of divine wisdom
  161.      and power in the speaking of miraculous tongues by unlearned
  162.      followers of the Lord Jesus.  It was not a masterly unfolding
  163.      of the Word that set the envious priests by the ears, later
  164.      but a mighty and immediate operation of the Gifts of the
  165.      Spirit in a lame-born man by two of the simple children of
  166.      God.  It was not a phenomenal display of evangelical fervour
  167.      that swept Samara some time later still, but a repeated
  168.      demonstration of the Gifts of the Spirit in supernatural
  169.      healings, through the Spirit-filled hand of one who was not
  170.      considered capable of ministering the word of God. (Acts 8:6;
  171.      6:2-4).  Neither was it alone the sweet savour of fragrant
  172.      holiness in Paul that caused the astounded Lycaonians and the
  173.      gentle-hearted Maltese barbarians to ascribe to him divine
  174.      origin and rank, but an unanswerable display of divine power
  175.      through the Gifts of the Spirit in miracle after miracle of
  176.      human deliverance. (Acts 14:3; 11; 28:6).

  178. 3.   THE SOURCE OF THE GIFTS.
  179.  
  180.      a) They are not received directly as a result of the seeker's
  181.      initiative, They are given as the Spirit wills. l Cor 12:11. 
  182.      He distributes at His discretion, though no doubt it is the
  183.      attitude of the believer to some extent which influences that
  184.      discretion.  Note I Cor. 12:31 and 14:1, 39.
  185.  
  186.      b) The Gifts, although an expression of Deity, become subject
  187.      to the will of the recipient.  God does not "take over" the
  188.      believer.
  189.      He works in cooperation with him.  Note Mark 16:20.  The
  190.      Gifts can be suppressed or used out of order. (I Cor 14:32) 
  191.      Note the teaching of this whole chapter towards order and
  192.      regulation.
  193.  
  194.      c) The Gifts are in the Holy Spirit.  Some have claimed the
  195.      operation of "less controversial" gifts, such as wisdom or
  196.      faith, etc.m but have never received the Baptism with the
  197.      Spirit or spoken in tongues.  Without receiving the Holy
  198.      Spirit as the apostles did, one cannot exercise His Gifts.
  199.  
  200.           Light is an excellent illustration of the nine Gifts of
  201.      the Spirit.  Note 1 Jn. 1:5.  There are seven compounded
  202.      colours in white light red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
  203.      indigo, and violet,  one end of the spectrum we have ultra-
  204.      violet and on the other end infra-red making nine in all. 
  205.      Note that, as in light, the 2 colours at both ends of the
  206.      spectrum - violet and ultra-violet and red and infra-red are
  207.      connected, so, in the Gifts, wisdom and knowledge are related
  208.      at one end, and tongues and interpretation at the other.  The
  209.      different colours of light represent photons of different
  210.      energy, those of blue light having nearly twice the energy of
  211.      red.  So it may be observed that although all the
  212.      manifestations of the Spirit are essential to have a true
  213.      vision of the Work of the Spirit, some manifestations call
  214.      for a greater display of energy that others.
  215.  
  216.      d)   I Cor. 12:4-6 shows us the activity of the entire
  217.      Godhead in these spiritual manifestations.
  218.      i.        The Father energises all operations.
  219.      ii.       The Son controls the administration (Head of the
  220.                Church)
  221.      iii.      The Holy Spirit is the medium whereby the
  222.                manifestations are distributed.

  224. 4.   THE  MANIFESTATION GIFTS CATEGORISED.
  225.  
  226.      The nine Gifts for the purpose of our study are best considered
  227.      as three groups of three.
  228.  
  229.      A.   The Gifts of Revelation. 
  230.           a)   The Word of Wisdom.
  231.           b)   The Word of Knowledge.
  232.           c)   The Discerning of Spirits.
  233.  
  234.      B.   The Gifts of Demonstration. 
  235.           a)   Tie Gifts of Faith.
  236.           b)   The working of Miracles.
  237.           c)   The Gifts of Healings.
  238.  
  239.      C.   The Gifts of Proclamation. (often known as the vocal or
  240.           utterance gifts.)
  241.           a) Prophecy.
  242.           b) Tongues.
  243.           c) Interpretation of Tongues.
  244.  
  245. In the Golden Candlestick of the Tabernacle (ex 25:31-401 we have
  246. a wonderful type of Christ and His Church- The Candlesticks.
  247. ornamentation is patterned on Aaron's almond rod that budded,
  248. blossomed and brought forth fruit after being cut off, -
  249.  
  250. Christ fulfilled all this.  He is the "Branch" that was cut off
  251. and is yet fruitful, The.3 branches on one side ind the 3 branches
  252. on the other side of tha candlestick were each ornamented with I
  253. bud, I blossom and I bowl in the ford of an almond, making
  254.  
  255. 3 groups of 3 on each side of the central Branch.  This gives us a
  256. wonderful balance between the Gifts of the Spirit and the Fruit of
  257. the Spirit in the Church, 2x9 in 3 groups of 3.
  258.  
  259. Note.  That the Fruit of the Spirit also divide into 3 categories
  260.  
  261.           POSITIVE  Love, Joy Peace.
  262.           PASSIVE   Longsuffering, gentleness, meekness.
  263.           PERSONAL  Temperance, Faith, Goodness.
  264.  
  265. These categories also show the manifestation of God's attributes
  266. as listed above.  We are urged to covet the "best gifts" but there
  267. is no indication which are the best.  Perhaps a good rule would be
  268. to seek those gifts which are the most necessary for the calling
  269. and service in which we are found.
  270.  
  271. ARE THE GIFTS RESIDENT?
  272.  
  273. There is some controversy over the permanence of the Gifts.  It is
  274. suggested that they are not actually given to a person, but that
  275. the Holy Spirit simply manifests what He chooses through whoever
  276. is available at a given time.  It is pointed out by the proponents
  277. of this view that the term "gift" does not actually occur in the
  278. original language.  The better term is "manifestation" and Paul
  279. refers to the as "spirituals" - Gk "pnuenatikos" in l Cor. 12:1,
  280. and the word "gift" in I Cor. 12:4 is "charisma", - a grace,
  281. favour or kindness.  They claim that because of this, the faculty
  282. for the manifestations do not actually stay with any one person,
  283. but on one occasion a person may manifest one gift and on another
  284. occasion another, but he can never say I have such and such a Gift
  285. permanently.

  287. This view would seem to be dispelled by the illustration Paul goes
  288. straight on to use to show the relation of one member of the body
  289. to each other.  The eye is always the eye and the ear the ear,
  290. etc., The leg does not walk on one occasion, hear, on another and
  291. smell on yet another. 1 Cor. 12:30 would also indicate that the
  292. same gifts are not manifested in everyone, also 1 Cor. 12:7 - to
  293. one this gift, to another that.
  294.  
  295. COMMANDS REGARDING THE GIFTS.
  296.  
  297. A.   We must not be ignorant of them.   l Cor. 12:1; 14:38.
  298.  
  299. B.   We are urged to earnestly seek for them.  I Cor. 13:31; 14:1.
  300.      Everyone should have at least one.
  301.  
  302.      But, say some very dear and highly esteemed Christians, the
  303.      Gifts of the Spirit in any case are surely optional; you can
  304.      live without them Agreed.  You can live without eyes and ears
  305.      and speech.  Spiritual Gifts are as optional as eyesight; you
  306.      can walk without Gifts, but you cannot be mighty in God
  307.      without them.  It is power, not holiness, that heals the sick
  308.      - the power the Gifts supply.  And remember, that the highest
  309.      claim to holiness is weakened by an exhibition of undisguised
  310.      irritation or disobedience concerning any of the commands of
  311.      God.  Does not holiness consist in obedience to every Holy
  312.      command of our most Holy God-even the command to "desire
  313.      spiritual gifts"?
  314.  
  315. C.   We must learn to operate them correctly, in order that we may
  316.      excel to the edifying of the assembly.
