*** SECCODE v1.1 ***
Secret Code v1.1 is a small program which can take any plain
ASCII text-file and rewrite it so that it cannot easily be
read or deciphered (decoded), except of course, using this
program to do so.
Aside from just having fun with these coded files, you may
also use them to upload/download from BBS's without as much
concern about privacy. This MAY reduce the responsibility of
BBS SySops as well as to the content of messages carried.
Although there ARE 99 'parameters' (different settings)
which can be used by the program to code files, this program
is intended for fun and although it may not be easy, it is not
impossible to decode it's coded messages without the program.
It is not intended for any serious security purposes.
REQUIREMENTS:
SECCODE1 requires at least 256K RAM and any color monitor.
INSTRUCTIONS:
The program is fairly easy to use, and there are instructions
within the program, but here are some additional instructions.
First, in order to use the program (we are assuming you want to
first CODE a file), you need your file to be in plain ASCII
format. Practically any standard word processor will allow you
to write and save a message in ASCII format. ASCII is a standard
text-format which does not have special control-characters in it.
*NEW
With this version there is an included small Message-Writer. This
is a no-frills word-processor capable of writing text-files of
up to 30,000 bytes (about 700 lines of text).
OR,
If you have DOS 5 or 6, simply type EDIT and the DOS editor will
run, which you may use to make, save and edit your message in the
proper format.
There is an included, small ASCII text-file called TEST.FIL which
you may use to experiment with.
Once you have your text-file, place it in the same directory as
SECCODE1.
*NEW
The Menu Selection 'Shell to DOS' will allow you to perform simple
DOS commands without leaving the program. You may want to use this
to copy, rename, delete, move files, etc.
Then start SECCODE1 by typing SECCODE1 at the DOS prompt. After the
opening screen, you will be presented with a menu. With this menu
you may either use the up/down arrow keys or the corresponding
number keys to make your selections. Then pressing [ENTER] will
execute your selection.
The first thing you have to do to code your file is 'LOAD' it
using menu selection #1. Press [ENTER] while #1 is highlighted
and you will be shown all the files in the current directory. Your
message file should be shown here. Enter the FULL NAME of your
message file and it will load. You will then be returned to the
Main Menu.
The second step is to set the 'parameter' for coding of this file.
The parameter is a number between 2 and 100 which tells the
program exactly how to write the code. In other words, the same
exact file may be coded 99 different ways, depending on this
setting. Generally, the higher parameter numbers will make the
file look less like the original.
IMPORTANT...It's a good idea to write down the parameter when
CODING a file since this parameter will need to be used when
DECODING the file. If someone else will be DECODING a file with
the program, you need to let them know what parameter you used.
To set the parameter, simply choose that item from the Main menu,
and enter any number from 2 to 100. Both the filename you are
coding and the parameter will be displayed when you return to the
Main menu.
The next step is to select CODE file from the Main menu. When you
select this, the program begins analyzing your loaded file, altering
it while it displays on screen, and writing it to a NEW file.
Your original file will remain intact, unchanged. The program will
create a new, CODED version of your original message, and the new
filename will be the same as your original filename, except it
will end in .SCC . You may open your new file with a text-editor
or word-processor and see that it is much different than the
original. Or you can type 'TYPE [FILENAME]' from DOS to see it.
NOTE that as a safety precaution, you cannot CODE any file which
has .SCC at the end of the filename.
To DECODE a CODED file, load the file as above, set the CORRECT
parameter which was used to CODE the file, and select DECODE from
the Main menu. You will be asked if you want to write the message
to a file. If you ONLY wish to read the DECODED file on your screen
you need not write it to a file. If you want to write your DECODED
message to a file, answer "Y" and you will need to supply a NEW
filename for the DECODED file. The usual DOS rules apply here
(see DOS manual if unsure). The program normally will NOT allow
you to use a filename of an existing file.
Then the file will display on your screen, one screen at a time
and, if option is chosen, will write a newly DECODED file for you
also. Note that if you press "A" for Abort during DECODING where
prompted, the process will end where it is. You may or may not
have created a partial file in doing this.
*NEW
With this version is the 'View Loaded File' option at the main
menu. This allows you to view a coded or decoded file on-screen.
You must Load the file first, however.
