SUPER DESTROY: What it is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUPER DESTROY (SD) is a file and directory utility created to simplify
deletion of files and directories or any combination of the two. SD has two
modes that it can be run in: COMMAND LINE or MENU. In this way, SD is very
versatile and should be able to suit the needs of everyone.
SD was created because I am lazy. And I would venture to guess that a
high percent of the rest of the world is lazy, too.
I hated having to erase a sub directory if it contained any other subs.
Especially when each of those subs had files in them! Well, with SD, those
days of frustration are over! SD can be used extremely quickly in COMMAND
LINE mode just by typing SD and the name of the file or directory to be
erased. Or if you notice your hard drive is getting low on space, you can
activate SD in the MENU mode by typing SD and hitting enter. In the MENU mode
you can delete up to 1000 directories and 1000 individual files at any given
time. All in seconds! And all without repetitive DOS commands.
I am sure that after using SD for a week, it will become second nature.
DOS's DELETE and RMDIR commands will be obsolite!
REGISTRATION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUPER DESTROY is under copyright for James Neill. It is released as SHARE-
WARE. You may distribute it freely, as long as all origional files are intact
and unaltered. Companies wishing to release it as part of a package, or on
CD-ROM should contact me first at the registration address.
Individuals are liscensed to use SUPER DESTROY for 30 days on one(1)
computer system. After that time, it should be registered by typing in
SD /REGISTRATION at the command prompt to print out the registration form.
If you don't own a printer, see the end of this DOC file for directions on
registering without a printer.
OK. Now everyone has probably seen this type of screen before. And alot of
people probably skip right passed it. BUT, perhaps everyone using this should
read this section thoroughly. FULL REGISTRATION of SD will entitle the user to
the newest version of SD, which includes mouse support, a new menuing system,
faster destruction sequences and a possible future of a WINDOWS VERSION!
Now how much do I want for this? How many millions of dollars do I want?!
$10 bucks. That's it. Not much for a program as useful and powerful as SD.
And if you want, for $5 you can do a limited registration(no updates).
Your support is appreciated. A good percentage of registration fees will
go into updating this and releasing other great utilities.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SD requires:
An 80x86 processor
EGA or better graphics
MS-DOS 4.01 or better(or a compatable 3rd party DOS)
INSTALLING SUPER DESTROY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To install SD on you hard drive, you need to copy the SD.EXE file to the
DOS directory of your hard drive. This way it is in your PATH, and can be run
just like any normal DOS command. SD will create a small (5-10 bytes) file in
the DOS directory called SD.CFG. This file is used to hold info on how your
version of SD is configured. The SD.CFG file cannot be moved from the DOS
directory, or SD will make a new one. SD.EXE can probably be put into any
directory in the path, but I didn't try it. So I won't make any promises.
CONFIGURING SUPER DESTROY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To configure SD, run it in MENU mode. The push 'C'. This will bring up
a menu of choices at the bottom of the screen. Choose what type of confirmat-
ion you want. Full confirmation will pause SD between each menu entry selected
to be deleted. The next type of confirmation will pause to ask if you want to
destroy all directories and files tagged. If you say yes, there will not be
any way to stop SD from erasing all selected stuff. The last type of confirm-
ation is none at all. WARNING! This mode will erase anything selected with
NO SECOND CHANCES AT ALL! Use this only if your a VERY GOOD typer!
The next menu brought up is sound. If you want full sound on every prompt,
then choose 'A'. If you want limited sound press 'B'. And 'C' chooses no sound
at all.
After entering all of that, the computer will save the config file to
C:\DOS\SD.CFG, overwriting any old configurations you may have had.
THE MENU SCREEN LAYOUT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The screen for MENU mode in SD is set up to be simple to understand. At the
top of the screen you will see the Copyright notice and such. Directly under
that, will be a line with the current file listing, the current mode selected
and an option to quit.
The main part of the screen is divided into two sections. The left half of
the screen is a listing of directories in the current directory (which is
listed at the top of the screen). The first directory is 'CD..' and selecting
this one does just that. Using the ARROW KEYS move about the screen tagging
files to be deleted with the SPACE BAR. Pushing RETURN while the highlighter
is over a directory name will allow you to change into that directory. NOTE:
When you change directories, all files and directories that were tagged are
no longer tagged. That way, you don't forget what directories you have been
in tagging stuff. Using the TAB key will switch to FILE mode, which works the
same way as the DIRECTORY mode. The first FILE is 'ALL FILES'. This will delete
all files of a designated file extension from the current directory.
At the bottom of the screen is a help section. It is always there.
COMMAND LINE ENTRY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using SD in COMMAND LINE mode is just like any other DOS command. Typing
SD/? or SD/HELP will bring up the help menu. Type SD /REGISTRATION to print
the registration form on LPT1. And to erase the current configuration and set
up the default config, type SD /NOCONFIG.
To erase a directory(and everything in it!) or a file, you would type:
SD <file or directory>
You can use all legal wildcards for filenames. Only one directory can be spe-
cified at a time. If you specify *.* you will get a prompt to see if you are
sure. Other than that, there is no protection of deleting files or deleting
directories. SO BE SURE YOU WANT TO DELETE WHAT YOU TYPE IN!
If you don't feel comfortable with no protection, then activate SD in the
menu mode.
REGISTERING WITHOUT A PRINTER
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To register, send $10 or more in the form of a US check or US currency to:
James Neill/ SD registration
213 Merriwood Drive
Oakdale, PA 15071
A $10 or more registration will entitle the user to the newest version on
disk, plus an option to be added to my mailing list. It will also give the
user full rights to use of the program and any upgrades.
Sending $5 will give the user a limited registration(program is registered
for use on one(1) computer system, but it does not entitle the user to any
upgrades to the program).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been programming for about 10 years, but I have never actually done
anything that I intended to release until SD. I wrote the entire program on a
486DX2 50 Mhz with 8 MB ram, an accelerated (24-bit) video card and a 212 MB
hard drive. This version of SD was written entirely in QuickBASIC v. 4.5.
The next version will probably be written in Visual Basic, though at this
time I am waiting for Microsoft to release the newest version.
I can do a little programming in C++ and MODULA II, but I felt that QB45
had a much better DOS support and file manipulation. Alot of people told me
that a program like this couldn't be done in basic. THINK AGAIN!
Anyway, anyone liking this program and having an idea for a different type
of utility or for improving this program please write. I would like to hear
your ideas.
THANKS!
