PassWord
(version 1.0)
by
Thomas Dains
If you're looking for a small utility to keep unwanted users away from your
system - then PassWord is for YOU! PassWord is a simple, straight forward
protection program designed to prevent unauthorized access of your
computer.
To use PassWord:
1. Copy the PASSWORD.EXE and SETPASS.EXE files to a directory in your PATH
statement.
2. Insert the command PASSWORD in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
(NOTE: For additional information on the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file and PATH statement, consult your DOS
manual.)
3. Type SETPASS at the DOS prompt and press enter.
The PassWord Setup Utility will prompt you for a PassWord (or phrase).
Enter any word, numbers, phrase, or combination of up to 255
characters. You will be prompted to re-enter the PassWord for
verification (this entry is not displayed). If the second entry does
not match the first, you will be returned to the first prompt and will
have to enter it again. Upon successful entry and verification of the
PassWord, the Setup Utility will save the entry to disk and return you
to the DOS prompt.
4. Reboot the system (or type PASSWORD at the DOS prompt).
You will be asked for the PassWord. As additional security, the
PassWord will NOT be displayed when you enter it.
If the correct PassWord is entered, the remainder of the AUTOEXEC file
will be executed. (If you typed PASSWORD at the DOS prompt, the screen
will clear and you will be returned to the system.)
However, if an INCORRECT PassWord is entered the screen will clear, an
alarm will sound and the user will be locked out of the system! A file
will also be created, and saved to root directory of the drive,
indicating the date and time of the unauthorized attempt on your
system.
If you forget your PassWord, DON'T PANIC! Unless, you've ignored the
advice given to all computer users --- BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP! You should
always have a spare systems disk saved on floppy. Boot from the floppy, go
to the hard drive root directory, delete the SETPASS.PWD file and run
SETPASS again.
NOTES: PassWord was written and compiled using Microsoft QuickBasic
(version 4.5) on an IBM-compatable 80286, running Microsoft DOS 5.0.
Although there shouldn't be any compatibility problems, I offer no
guarantees of operation on a system running less than DOS 5.0. PassWord
(version 1.0) is distributed as FREEWARE! All I ask in return for its use
is credit for its creation and any comments on its operation with your
machine. Send any comments (or criticisms) to:
