  1. This update for Norton Utilities version 7.0 provides support
  2. for the newly released Stacker version 3.1. Stacker 3.1 now 
  3. interacts with DOS 6 in the same way as Microsoft's DoubleSpace,
  4. and can quickly convert DblSpace drives to Stacker drives by 
  5. updating the compressed drive header and only converting the 
  6. data over time as it is accessed.  DOS 6 loads the driver BEFORE 
  7. the CONFIG.SYS file is executed. This allows the CONFIG.SYS and 
  8. AUTOEXEC.BAT files to be placed on the compressed drive.  
  9. The following programs are affected by the new Stacker 3.1:

  11. NDIAGS          - Changes the Comprehensive Memory Test so it can
  12.                   temporarily replace the CONFIG.SYS. file. The 
  13.                   new NDIAGS is NOT in this update. It is provided
  14.                   in a separate update file - NDIAGU.EXE.

  16. SFORMAT, RESCUE,
  17. RESCUE.INI and
  18. NUCONFIG        - Changes how these programs find the CONFIG.SYS
  19.                   and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for copying and changing.
  20.  
  21. NDD             - Supports drives converted from DoubleSpace to 
  22.                   Stacker 3.1.
  23.  
  24. SPEEDISK        - Supports drives converted from DoubleSpace to 
  25.                   Stacker 3.1 by fully converting the DoubleSpace
  26.                   compressed drive to Stacker 3.1 format prior to
  27.                   defragmenting the drive.  This process is 
  28.                   reported by a dialog message. The conversion 
  29.                   process can take several minutes or more 
  30.                   depending on the amount of compressed data that 
  31.                   needs to be converted.

  33. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  34. -------------------------
  35. To update the current version of NU 7, copy the three files,
  36. NU7UP.BAT, NU7UPD.EXE and NU7.RTP, to the directory containing the 
  37. original copy of Norton Utilities Version 7.0.  Then type:

  39.         NU7UP <ENTER>
  40.  
  41. A new BACKUP sub-directory will be created containing your original
  42. programs, in case you need to return to the original versions. 
  43.  
  44. IMPORTANT!  If you reinstall NU7, you must reinstall this update.
  45. Before reinstalling this update by running NU7UPD, you must delete
  46. the files in the BACKUP directory. NU7UP.BAT will do this for you.

  48. UPDATE DETAILS
  49. --------------
  50. After installing this update, the SFORMAT, RESCUE and NUCONFIG 
  51. files will be about 90-95K larger than the originals. In order
  52. to provide this update electonically, these files had to be
  53. made independent of the NLIB100.RTL file. This greatly increased
  54. their size. Because passwords are stored in the NLIB100.RTL file,
  55. NUCONFIG and SFORMAT can no longer be password protected.
