NU 7.0 Update for MS-DOS 6.2
This update for Norton Utilities version 7.0 provides support for
the newly released MS-DOS Version 6.2. MS-DOS 6.2 extends the
interactive boot feature to include the ability to single-step
through your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and adds an Automount capability
for DoubleSpace removable media (such as diskettes), along with
several other features.
The following Norton Utilities programs are affected by the new
MS-DOS 6.2:
NDOS - Adds support for the /Y switch for interactive
boot.
NDD, SFORMAT,
and RESCUE - Modified for support of DoubleSpace Automount
drives. This update also supports the Auto-
mount feature of SuperStor/DS for IBM DOS 6.1.
NOTE: An additional update to Norton Cache, which is necessary
when MS-DOS 6.2 DoubleSpace Automount is enabled, will be provided
as a separate patch available before the end of November 1993.
In the meantime, if you are using Norton Cache, you should
disable the Automount feature using the DBLSPACE utility.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
-------------------------
To update the current version of NU 7.0, copy the three files,
DOS62UP.BAT, DOS62UPP.EXE and DOS62UP.RTP, to the directory
containing the original copy of Norton Utilities Version 7.0.
Change into the directory where you just copied these files and
then type:
DOS62UP <ENTER>
A new BACKUP sub-directory will be created containing your original
programs, in case you need to return to the original versions.
IMPORTANT! If you reinstall NU7, you must reinstall this update.
Before reinstalling this update by running DOS62UP, you must delete
the files in the BACKUP directory. DOS62UP.BAT will do this for you.
UPDATE NOTES
------------
NDOS now supports a new switch (/Y) which causes it to prompt
"(Y/N)? " prior to execution of each line in any startup batch file
(including NSTART.BTM and AUTOEXEC.BAT and any batch file called by
them). This switch is passed automatically by DOS 6.2 when you
press the <F8> key while DOS is loading (interactive boot).
SFORMAT and RESCUE include support for mounted DoubleSpace
compressed diskettes. When you enter these utilities, they will
determine the type of diskette in the drive, and if compressed
they will indicate this in the Size field. Because you cannot
directly format the compressed diskette, SFORMAT also lists
the host drive letter which you can format. If you format the
host drive, the diskette will no longer be compressed. (You
should use the utility provided by your compression software
to reformat a compressed diskette that you want to remain
compressed.) RESCUE will allow you to copy rescue files to a
compressed diskette without reformatting it, or you can select the
host drive letter to format and create a non-compressed rescue
diskette.
NOTE: If you swap the type of diskette (compressed vs. non-
compressed) in the drive while running SFORMAT or RESCUE, you must
exit and restart the utility to refresh the drive information.
After installing this update, the SFORMAT.EXE, and RESCUE.EXE
files will be about 90-95K larger than the originals. In order
to provide this update electronically, these files had to be
made independent of the NLIB100.RTL file. This greatly increased
their size. Because passwords are stored in the NLIB100.RTL file,
SFORMAT can no longer be password protected.
