A good drill to practice handling spin is to stand at net while a friend mixes up heavy topspin and slice shots to you. 15 minutes.

3 shot drill: Serve an easy serve and follow to the net. No matter where the return goes, try to hit your volley to the same spot 20 times in a row

To hit a hard solid volley you have to move your weight through the ball. This means you must have quick footwork to met the ball early and out in front.

The volley should be a short "punching" stroke. Add spin by slightly angling the racket, not by taking a big swing at the ball!

To control placement with the volley you have to get to the ball early. Stay on your toes and be ready to react then put the ball where your opponent isn't!
