XMB
(X-wing Mission Builder)
Version 1.2
Shareware Edition
Mission Builder for X-wing Space Combat Simulator
(C) Copyright August, September 1993
by Neal Westfall
CIS:[70222,1164]

OVERVIEW:
XMB is a utility for the popular LucasArts Entertainment game X-wing.
It allows you to effortlessly edit or completely redesign X-wing mission
files and briefing files. It has been implemented using Borland's Turbo
Vision interface library to facilitate ease of use. Editing missions is as
easy as picking up the ships with the mouse and moving them. A briefing
editor is provided as well, so you can provide briefing files with your
missions. Context sensitive help is available at the touch of a button.
IMPORTANT!: XMB modifies data files which are distributed with X-wing
and Imperial Pursuit. It is strongly advised that before using this
program, you back up all of your mission and briefing files. Copy all files
in the mission directory to another directory.
The author of this program makes no representations or warranties as to the
suitability of fitness for any particular purpose of the provided software or
documentation. The program is provided "as is" to the user provided the user
understands this and accepts these terms. No warranties or guarantees are
expressed or implied. The author cannot be held responsible for any damage
resulting from the use or misuse of the software.
The author has no affiliation with LucasArts Games, and the program in no way
should be thought of as sponsered, sanctioned, or authorized by LucasArts
Games in any respect whatsoever.
COMPUSERVE SWREG:
XMB and XW-PLT can now be registered online on Compuserve via SWREG!
See note on instructions of how to do this in the section below regarding
registration.
REVISION HISTORY:
Version 1.2 - Added Briefing Style Option which controls the color
of the briefing map. Changed buttons on briefing text
selection dialog from "Ok" and "Cancel" to "Edit" and
"Done", respectively, to avoid confusion. Removed
ascii chart and calendar as these were useless for this
application. The calculator is questionable, but I left
that in for now.
Version 1.1 - Clipboard features added. Fixed problem of not being
able to read several Imperial Pursuit briefing files.
Somewhat improved calculations to get ships to appear
properly on the briefing maps. Ship formations now
comply with those in "X-wing: the Official Strategy
Guide." Waypoints are now handled somewhat differently.
Minor bug fixes.
Registered Version: Added a cross reference feature to
the ship dialog box. This serves as an aid to debugging
missions by showing how the other ships interact with
the ship being edited.
Version 1.0 - First official release.
First version to have online help.
Version 0.2ß - Added briefing editor.
Internal beta, no released copies.
Version 0.1ß - Beta version. Distributed to one person only, as far
as I know.
FILES IN THIS DISTRIBUTION:
XMB.EXE - main program file.
XMBHELP.HLP - program help file.
XMB.DOC - this file.
XMB.ICO - Microsoft Windows 3.1 icon.
DESUPPLY.XWI - sample edited mission.
DESUPPLY.BRF - sample edited briefing file.
MISSIONS.TXT - file names for missions.
You can copy the sample mission and briefing files over one of your existing
missions to play it. I created this mission during the testing of the
program. To replace X-wing Historic Mission 1 with this one, do the
following:
copy DESUPPLY.* WAISTEM.*
Make sure you have backed up the old mission if you want to restore it.
INSTALLATION:
Copy all files in the archive to your XWING mission directory or
anywhere in your path. To start the program, just change to your XWING
mission directory and type 'XMB' and the program will load.
For example: copy *.* C:\GAMES\XWING\MISSION
cd C:\GAMES\XWING\MISSION
Type 'XMB' and you're ready to go!
FEATURES:
General:
- Overhead map view editor window with five zoom magnifications.
- Briefing editor
- Online help system
- Clipboard features
- Cross Reference feature (registered version)
Editing of the following is possible with XMB:
- Flight Groups, arrival times, etc.
- Objects, such as mines and asteroids
- Mission Time, Title, briefing text, etc.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
In version 1.0, several files from the Imperial Pursuit add-on Tour of
Duty disk could not be read by XMB. In version 1.1, this is now fixed.
As new tours of duties are released compatibility problems may arise.
Please be aware that this version of XMB has only been tested with the
original X-wing missions and the Imperial Pursuit missions.
When editing X-wing missions be aware that there is a limit to how many
ships can be in play at any given time. If there are too many ships, some
may not appear when expected. Also, if there are too many ships on screen
at one time, you will notice a slowdown in performance of the machine,
particularly with slower computers. Trim down the number of ships if this
becomes a problem.
If you assign commands that have check marks next to them, don't forget
to specify a command target. These commands require a command target. If
not specified, undesirable results may occur (most likely in the form of the
game abruptly exiting to dos).
REGISTERING XMB
XMB is being distributed as shareware. The funds are an encouragement
to continue development and defray CIS connect time charges. I have received
very few registrations, but I know the program is in wide usage among FSFORUM
members on Compuserve. I do this mainly as a hobby, but what you see is
still the result of many hours of programming time put forth by me. I have
priced the registration at what I call a "minimal" fee, which I don't think
will break anybody. Please understand that I'm not trying to make a killing
or anything off of this, but your registration does help justify further
development. So PLEASE register if you like this program!!!
Registering will get you the following:
- latest version on disk***
- features not available in SW version
- any related utilities I develop
- any missions or Tours of Duty I collect from users who don't
mind having them distributed
- continued development and improvement of the program
- free upgrades ($2.00 S/H)
*** Compuserve members can alternately have it E-mailed to them. Note
that this costs me about the same as sending a disk.
I am looking into implementing some utilities to edit the yellow
scroll-up text and green Historic Combat mission descriptions. These will
be included with registered versions as they become available.
Registered users can receive an updated copy of the program by
sending $2.00 to the address below to cover shipping costs.
Registration fees are as follows:
X-wing Mission Builder only: $ 10.00
XW-PLT Pilot Utility only: $ 6.00
Both Utilities: $ 15.00
Send registration to: Neal Westfall
3061 Oregon St.
Rialto, Ca 92376
Registration can also be done online on Compuserve via SWREG. The cost
is $15.00. To register in this manner, type GO SWREG at any ! prompt, select
the appropriate menu item and follow the instructions. The shareware program
ID is 1352. Registering in this manner is the equivalent of registering both
utilities as described above.
I can be reached via Compuserve at 70222,1164. For those with
Internet access, the address is nwestfal@blaze.csci.csusb.edu, although
I am not too sure that mail can always get through.
ACKNOWLEGEMENTS
XMB was developed using Borland's Pascal with Objects 7.0 and Dave
Baldwin's excellent Dialog Design program.
Much of the information was gleaned from the pages of Rusel DeMaria's
book, "X-wing: The Official Strategy Guide", published by Prima Publishing.
A must have guide for every X-wing pilot. Written by the same author who
wrote the original "Farlander Papers".
Thanks to Herb Rowder and others in Compuserve's FSFORUM for the
encouraging responses to the initial release of the program.
X-wing, Imperial Pursuit, Star Wars, and any other references to
Star Wars stuff are trademarks of LucasArts and Lucasfilm, LTD.
FINAL NOTE:
I decided not to go into a detailed doc file, partly because I hate
writing documentation, partly because most people don't read it, but mostly
because it would be redundant in lieu of the online help system. The help
system covers all of the aspects fairly well, and I thought that throwing
together a long doc file would just be a rehash.
