  14. The product
  15. -----------
  16. Kith and Kin is a software package for documenting and storing family trees
  17. which will appeal to genealogists, family historians and anyone interested
  18. in researching and documenting family history. It features an easy to use
  19. graphical interface and powerful multi-level editing tools which makes it
  20. ideal for both large and small trees. The program supports date and place
  21. of births, marriages and deaths as well as multiple marriages and aliases
  22. for each person. Pictures, diagrams, sounds, etc may be embedded in or
  23. linked to a person or family. A printed book can be produced with family
  24. group details (which may incorporate pictures and diagrams) and a complete,
  25. cross-referenced index to names and families. The user has control over the
  26. formatting and extent of all printed reports which also include tree layout,
  27. descendant tree, ancestral tree and person details. Compatibility with
  28. "Personal Ancestral File" GEDCOM files means the user can export and import
  29. data to and from other genealogy programs.

  34. The program is simple to use and anyone familiar with Windows will quickly
  35. learn to control the following features.

  37.  > Graphical representation of family units and relationships provides fast
  38.    access to editing.
  39.  > Multi-level editing means the user can traverse the tree while editing
  40.    and adding people and families.
  41.  > Support for date and place of births, deaths and marriages.
  42.  > Multiple aliases are allowed for each person.
  43.  > Notes for each person and family may be entered, edited and are included
  44.    in printed reports. Full clipboard support allows exchange of text with
  45.    other applications.
  46.  > Pictures, diagrams, sounds, videos and any object created by other
  47.    applications which support OLE may be associated with a person or family.
  48.  > Search for text in any field, including notes, then edit person or
  49.    family details direct from the search results.
  50.  > Each person and family has a code which allows fast access to editing as
  51.    well as making the printed documents readable.
  52.  > Printouts include tree layout, descendant tree, ancestral tree, family
  53.    details, person details and index. The format and extent of printed
  54.    documents may be fully controlled by the user.

  67. Support for PAF GEDCOM files (the Genealogical Data Communication standard)
  68. is now included. You can export and import data to and from other genealogy
  69. programs. Simply specify that the file you wish to open is a GEDCOM file and
  70. Kith and Kin will do the rest. You can create a new tree or merge the GEDCOM
  71. file with an existing tree. Saving to a GEDCOM file is just as easy. Export
  72. one person, selected families or an entire tree.

  74. There are now indicators in Person and Family data dialogs to show if any
  75. notes or objects are present.

  77. The dialog fields and controls now have hot-keys to speed up keyboard use.

  79. A new search facility has been added to check for people in limbo, ie.
  80. people who do not appear in families because they have no parents or
  81. marriages.

  83. Due to the length of time taken to load larger GEDCOM files, a status
  84. indicator bar is displayed each time any file type is opened or saved.
  85. Clicking on the Cancel button will abort the process.

  87. The placement of new family rectangles has been improved.

  89. The Select Dialog has been improved to handle larger trees.

  91. You can now scroll the tree area while moving or placing families. Simply
  92. move the cursor to the edge of window in the direction that you want to
  93. scroll. Hold down the CTRL key to move in larger jumps.

  95. You can also use the PageUp, PageDn, Home and cursor keys to scroll around
  96. the tree area.

  98. The tree area display has been enhanced.

  100. The current tree is not deleted when a File|Open fails.

  102. Some reports were becoming garbled when text was being printed beyond the
  103. edges of the page (eg. in ancestral trees). This version correctly clips all
  104. text at the set margins.

  106. The heading lines in the Family Details printout were missing from page 2
  107. onwards on some printers. This has now been fixed.
  108.  
  109. A Person Details printout is now available for printing details of one or
  110. more people.
  111.  
  112. The Descendant and Ancestral trees now have titles and have been improved to
  113. handle multi-page printing. Printers which can handle continuous stationery
  114. can produce large charts without having to join sheets.

  116. The Family Details printout now has improved widow/orphan control, eg. a
  117. page break was possible between the CHILDREN header and the first child.
  118.  
  119. The Tree Layout print has been enhanced.
  120.  
  121. The Index printout can now be sorted by either code or name.

  123. Appropriate menu items are now correctly disabled when there are no people
  124. and/or families in the current tree.

  126. The following are the limits on the size of the tree data. You can have up
  127. to 16383 people and families combined. The size of the Tree Area is approx.
  128. 200 families wide by 350 high. The maximum number of characters which can be
  129. held in each person or family notes is 9500. Ultimately the total amount of
  130. tree data will depend on the amount of memory (RAM) in your PC. To some
  131. extent the speed of your PC will govern the usability of the software with
  132. large amounts of data.

  144. Registration
  145. ------------
  146. This product is SHAREWARE. The version on this release disk is a fully
  147. functional evaluation copy which the user may install and use free of charge
  148. for 30 days. After that time, if the user wishes to continue use, a fixed
  149. registration fee of 24 Pounds Sterling is payable to us.
  150. Occasional registration reminder screens are used in the program, increasing
  151. in intensity when 30 days have passed, but no crippling is used.
  152. Upon registration the user becomes entitled to the registered version of the
  153. software, telephone support and notification of new releases and updates.
  154. The registered version has been optimised by removing the registration
  155. reminder coding.
  156. A data file conversion program which will convert tree (.TRE) and options 
  157. (.OPT) files created by earlier versions of Kith and Kin so that they can be
  158. used with the latest release is provided with all registered versions of the
  159. software.
