DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
BOOK STACK is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program
useful and that you continue to use BOOK STACK after the 30
day evaluation period you must become a registered user.
Registered users will automatically receive a copy of the latest
version, a Utilities Pack (which allows file rebuilding, data export)
telephone support, automatic notification of new versions and
new products, upgrade program to convert all your existing
shareware version data to the latest regsitered version format.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of the shareware version
(NOT the registered version) along to your friends for them
to try out.
To become a registered user of BOOK STACK send a cheque or money
order for £25 made payable to Sterling Data Services, 2 Fairford
Road, Tilehurst, Reading RG3 6QB. You can use the supplied form
for this, to print it out : COPY REGISTER.DOC PRN Or phone
with your ACCESS/VISA card details.
If you have any queries, suggestions for improvement etc please
phone me on 0734 427333 or leave a message on CIX (mmc) or
Compuserve (ID 100010,1150).

USER'S MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
============
BOOK STACK has four main functions:
1) Storing of book and magazine details (Title, Publisher,
Location etc) and searching/selecting on any of these
fields or combinations of fields.
2) A "Study Assistant" - an unlimited number of notes can be
attached to each book record and for each note a revision
date can be set. A reminder screen (optional) will display
when the program is first run each day if there are notes for
that day that should be revised. Staged Repetition has been
found to be one of the best ways to memorize information. (see
REVISION topic for more details).
3) Keeping track of borrowers - a report can be produced which shows
any books on loan which should have been returned by now. Notes can
be attached to each borrower's record.
4) Quotations - the program maintains a database of your favourite
quotations, which can be browsed and searched on by topic. So, for
example, if you feel a bit down you can browse your comedy quotes.
Or you can boost your "attitude" by looking through your motivation
quotations.
System Requirements:
To run this software you will need an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or
compatible with a minimum of 640K of RAM, a hard disk and
MS-DOS 3.0 or higher.
Back Up Your Files, PLEASE:
Your data files SHOULD BE BACKED UP any time you've made
significant changes. A good rule of thumb is to back up your data
any time you've made more entries/changes than you'd want to type
in again. The data files are *.DAT *.K?? and *.MEM
This software is completely menu driven and easy to operate. Since
the computer does all the hard work for you, this manual is short.
Most of the manual is also available as context-sensitive help
screens. Just press F1 anytime you are unsure what to do.
We'll describe how to enter information; what to do to edit
existing entries; and how to find the entry(s) you need.

UPDATING & ADDING RECORDS
=========================
The first pulldown menu is Edit/Browse - here you can view the
records in various sort orders:
By Title
By Author
By Publisher
By Subject
By Format
Each scrolling list of titles can be searched very quickly by means
of the LOCATOR feature. As letters are typed into the locator field
the program immediately starts to try and match the word being typed.
Usually only two or three letters need be entered before the desired
record is found.
Standard keystrokes are used throughout BOOK STACK:
INS add (insert) a record
ENTER change details
DEL delete
F2 save a record immediately (no need to move to
the end of the input screen)
F7 cancel the changes/additions already made
Extra keystrokes can be seen on the "mouse bar" - this is the fifth
line from the bottom of each screen and has various buttons that
mouse users can click on (left button). For example the EDIT NOTES
button has the E highlighted in yellow - that indicates that a
keyboard user can press ALT + E to access the function. Clicking
on the right button has the effect of pressing ESC - ie it takes
you back out of a screen or input form.
The last three lines of each screen are context-relevant help which
changes as you move from field to field (using ENTER or down arrow
to move forwards and ESC or up arrow to move backwards). The fourth
line from the bottom of the screen is the "keyline" - it shows the
keystrokes active at that part of the program.
At any part of the program F1 can be used to bring up another help
screen - help screens obtained this way are linked to a main Help Index.
Page 2
PICKLISTS - these are scrolling lists of typical entries. They are
indicated by a chevron sign just to the left of the field. Click
on the chevron or press F10 to bring up the picklist. For example,
see the Publisher, Format, Borrower fields. Picklists serve two
purposes:
1) Fast data entry - no need to keep typing in common data
such as Paperback for format.
2) Data is validated as it is entered - this means that if you
mistype an entry, such as spelling "Paperbck" the picklist
will automatically come up for you to select the correct
data. This also ensures standardisation of data between
different users.
At date fields press F10 or click on the field to use the paste-in
calendar.
When a title is entered a SORT CODE will be automatically generated.
This code determines the book's position in the picklists and in
printed reports. For example, "the" will be removed in the title
"The Rose Garden" and it will be sorted under R.
A similar code is generated for author - here initials and firstnames
are removed from the sort code.
SEARCHES
========
From the search list press ALT + Q (or click on Query button) to
access the search screen. The search list shows the results of a
search - so before making a search all records in the database will
be included. After a search maybe only 3 records are shown in the
list - you can browse through these or save the selection to disk by
pressing ALT + S. Saved selections can be used in the reports section.
A search is either typed in at the prompt (which can accept 255
characters) or selected from a picklist of often-used strings. Press
F10 to select from the list. To add the current search string to the
list press ALT + F10.
A typical search is to find text in a field:
'DRAW' IN LOCATION (finds Drawing Room in Location)
DRAW is the text to find - IN is the search operator (see right hand
side of the search screen for full list) - LOCATION is the field
description. There is a list of these descriptions on the left
hand side of the search screen - they must be entered EXACTLY as
shown. EG; LENT_TO is the field description for borrower.
Page 3
If the field is a numeric one (shown by letter N) then you cannot
use IN but you can use range operators such as > (greater than)
or <= (less than or equal to).
Search strings can be connected together:
'SCHUS' IN PUBLISHER AND 'WE' IN AUTHOR
Connecting words are AND NOT and OR. The above string would find
(among others probably) Schuster in the publisher field and Wells in
author. But note that it would also find an author called FREWE for
example. In which case you might want to make the search more
precise by entering WELLS in full.
NUMERIC FIELDS:
For example, the DUEBACK field is numeric. To find all books which
are due back by 4 May 1994:
DUEBACK <= 04/05/94
Note that dates must be entered in the format dd/mm/yy
Another example: to find all books priced between £12 and £15:
PRICE >= 12 AND PRICE <= 15

REVISION
========
Research has found that the best way to retain information is to
review it at staged intervals. Such as; one day later, 3 days later,
and after a week and then after a month. This enables the memory to
be refreshed just before it would otherwise fade.
BOOK STACK makes this progress easy by means of a Revision Date for
each note attached to a book/magazine. Every day you should run
BOOK STACK and choose option 1 from the Revision Menu to see what
needs reviewing that day. At this date you can reset the Revision Date
by either a defined period (ALT + number shown on the Keyline, or
click on the button) or by keying in a new date.
There is a field called Previous revision, which is the number of
days between the Next Revision date you entered last time and
the PREVIOUS Next Revision Date before that. This gives an indication
whereabouts on the Revsion "time line" you are. So if the Previous
Revision shows as 3 days it would indicate that you should now review
in, say, 7 days - and therefore you would click on the 7 button which
will add seven days on to today's date and put that date into the
Next Revision field.
Eventually, when you are sure that you have learnt the material, you
can select a Next Revision date of NONE which will take the Notes out
of the revision system.
"Repetition is The Secret of Success"
In Configuration, if you answer YES to "Show Reminder when revision
notes are due?" a reminder screen will pop up whenever BOOK STACK
is run and there are Revision Dates less than or equal to today's
date.
