│ THE BASIC RIGHTS HYPERTEXT PROGRAMME │
└──────────────────────────────────────┘
The Basic Rights hypertext programme uses a hypertext system called
"HelpFul", which was developed by David Palmer of Ferret Information
Systems.
The system allows you to browse a hypertext document (but won't allow
you to change it in any way.
The installation programme will install the files you need to your
hard disk, and will start the programme.
In the future you can run run the programme by changing to the
appropriate sub-directory on the hard disk (normally \basicr) by
typing at the DOS prompt:
cd \basicr
and then either: Basic (for colour systems)
or: Basicbw (for mono systems)
When HelpFul starts up it looks for two files in the current directory:
'docname.HLP' and 'docname.IDX', or 'basic.hlp' and 'basic.idx' in the
example above. If either of these files is not found HelpFul complains
and exits back to DOS.
HelpFul then checks that the index file (extension .IDX) is up-to-date
with the source file (extension .HLP). If this is not the case
then HelpFul complains that the index file is out-of-date, and the
programme is aborted.
Note: If you try to alter or edit the programme it will no longer
run, and you will have to re-install the programme from your master
disk.
All being well the hypertext document is displayed, starting with the
main topic (the opening screen). Links are highlighted on screen as
blue-on-gray text (on a colour monitor) or as inverse video (on a
monochrome monitor). Various keys can be used to browse around the
hypertext - these are summarised on the bottom line of the screen, and
further help on keys is usually available by keying F1. Keying ESCape
exits HelpFul at any time.
If attached, a mouse can be used to good effect - clicking the left
mouse button selects the link under (or to the left of) the mouse
cursor; clicking the right button drops back a topic, as if BACKSPACE
had been keyed. Clicking both buttons together drops back to the main
topic.
Holding down the Ctrl key and hitting F5, F6, F7 or F8 puts a bookmark
at the displayed topic. Thereafter, keying just F5, F6, F7 or F8 (as
appropriate) returns to the marked topic.
Keying F4 results in a prompt for text to search for. Type in all or
part of a key word or phrase and HelpFul will search the hypertext file
for an ocurrence of the text. If found, the topic containing it is
displayed, otherwise a beep is sounded.
The best way to become familiar with browsing hypertext is just to
practise.
