  45. MMPM/2 DEVELOPER ASSISTANCE
  46. ===========================

  48. IBM provides the Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 toolkit to independent
  49. hardware and software developers to assist them in the
  50. integration of multimedia into new and existing applications.  The toolkit
  51. includes C language bindings, utilities and sample programs.  Sound or
  52. Audio for MMPM/2 is device-independent; therefore, there is no need for a
  53. special sound toolkit for individual sound cards.  The MMPM/2 Toolkit is
  54. available through the same IBM channels as the base MMPM/2 product.

  61. PROBLEMS AND WORK-AROUND SOLUTIONS
  62. ==================================
  63.  
  64. Following are some problems and work-around solutions encountered
  65. at the time of this release:
  66.  
  67.   o  This release does not support:
  68.  
  69.      -  MIDI recording
  70.      -  Multiple instances: meaning that two audio applications can not use the 
  71.     adapter simultaneously.
  72.  
  73.   o  Sound Blaster (normal) adapters do not support software volume control.
  74.  
  75.   o  MCV adapters should be set to I/O address 240 to avoid conflicts with SCSI 
  76.      adapters.
  77.  
  78.   o  Note that IRQ 7 is used for LPT1 and IRQ 5 is used for COM1 on OS/2 2.1
  79.      On most ISA bus machines, IRQs are NOT shareable, thus printing or serial 
  80.      communication on COM1 will not function if the SoundBlaster is set to those 
  81.      IRQs.

  87.     INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR MMPM/2 DRIVERS
  88.  
  89.  
  90.     If you have any OS/2 version prior to OS/2 Ver. 2.1 - March '93
  91.     Beta, it is recommended that you upgrade to this latest version.
  92.     This version includes MMPM/2 and the MMPM/2 drivers for all
  93.     SoundBlaster cards.  The March '93 Beta version is also
  94.     recommended because it supports SB16ASP on-board audio
  95.     compression/decompression.  OS/2 Ver. 2.1 - March '93 Beta
  96.     can be obtained from IBM for $15 by calling (800) 342-6672.
  97.     The driver installation procedures are listed below for each version
  98.     of OS/2 and its corresponding release of MMPM/2.

  102. Installation using OS/2 Ver. 2.0 with MMPM/2
  103. --------------------------------------------
  104.  
  105.     1) Install the MMPM/2 (Multimedia Presentation Manager/2).
  106.  
  107.     2) Download the SBMMPM2.EXE file from the Creative Labs
  108.        Bulletin Board (phone: (408) 428-6660) to a floppy drive.
  109.  
  110.     3) Run the SBMMPM2.EXE program on your floppy.  This will unzip
  111.        the audio drivers and other files you'll need for installing them.
  112.        Keep this floppy in the drive.
  113.  
  114.     4) Run the MMPM/2 MINSTALL command and select the appropriate
  115.        SoundBlaster audio driver and it will be installed.  If you
  116.        need a driver for an SB16 board, install any SoundBlaster
  117.        driver (SBxxx.SYS) from the menu and then follow steps 3) through
  118.        5) in the "Installation using OS/2 ver. 2.1 - Dec. '92 Beta"
  119.        procedure given below.

  123. Installation using OS/2 Ver. 2.1 with MMPM/2 Ver. 1.1 - Dec. '92 Beta
  124. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  125.  
  126.     This version of OS/2 comes with MMPM/2 and the drivers
  127.     needed by all SoundBlaster cards except SB16 cards.
  128.  
  129.     1) Install MMPM/2 (Multimedia Presentation Manager/2).
  130.  
  131.     2) Run the MINSTALL program and select the appropriate
  132.        SoundBlaster card from the "Sound Blaster Installation" menu.
  133.        This will automatically install the driver for you.  If the driver
  134.        you need is for an SB16 card, it is NOT included with this
  135.        version of OS/2 MMPM/2, so you must follow the procedure
  136.        below.  Complete procedures 3), 4), and 5) below ONLY if you
  137.        need to install a driver for an SB16 card!
  138.  
  139.     3) Run the MINSTALL program and select any Sound Blaster card from
  140.        the "Sound Blaster Installation" menu.  This will load the
  141.        audio driver for the SoundBlaster card chosen.  When the
  142.        installation is complete, the CONFIG.SYS file must be modified.
  143.        Using an editor/word processor, delete the following line from
  144.        the CONFIG.SYS file.
  145.  
  146.        DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\SBXXX.SYS  Y Y Y Y Y
  147.  
  148.        The Xs correspond to the driver of the card you chose
  149.        (i.e. SBPD2.SYS).  The Ys are some numbers--delete them too!
  150.  
  151.     4) Delete the SBXXX.SYS file from the C:\MMOS2 directory and
  152.        replace it by copying the downloaded SB16D2.SYS file to the
  153.        C:\MMOS2 directory.
  154.  
  155.     5) Using your editor/word processor, add the following line in
  156.        place of the one just deleted.
  157.        
  158.        DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\SB16D2.SYS 1 1 5 5 220 8
  159.  
  160.        The numbers 1, 1, 5, 5, 220, 8 refer to the parameters listed
  161.        below in left-to-right order.  The numbers listed above may
  162.        not work for your particular SoundBlaster card.  To clarify
  163.        which numbers to use, run the TESTSB16 program included with
  164.        the SB16 card.  This program will give you the numbers for the
  165.        2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th parameters.  Set the first parameter
  166.        to 1 and the 6th parameter to 8.  (Note:  The 3rd parameter
  167.        (16-bit DMA) is used only by the SB16 card.  All other
  168.        SoundBlaster cards do not use this parameter, thus they have
  169.        only 5 parameters--parameters 4, 5, and 6 become 3, 4, and 5
  170.        respectively.)

  172.        1st parameter - Audio card (usually 1)
  173.        2nd parameter - DMA channel number (8-bit)
  174.        3rd parameter - DMA channel number (16-bit)  Used only by SB16 card.
  175.        4th parameter - Interrupt number (2, 5, or 7)
  176.        5th parameter - I/O address (220, 240, 260, 280)
  177.        6th parameter - Buffer size in KB (kilobytes) (usually 4 or 8)

  181. Installation using OS/2 Ver. 2.1 with MMPM/2 Ver. 1.1 - Mar. '93 Beta

  184.     1) Install the MMPM/2 (Multimedia Presentation Manager/2).

  186.     2) Run the MINSTALL program and select the appropriate
  187.        SoundBlaster card from the "Sound Blaster Installation" menu.

  193. This driver is provided "AS IS".  Your only revenue to get bugs fixed is to
  194. complete the following form and either MAIL or FAX it to us.  Any other
  195. methods of communciation is not applicable.
