Thanks for selecting this shareware file!
This listing has something for almost anyone interested in learning
about health. 'HealthFreebies' is a valuable source of free information
and promotional items related to health. This is not a novelty or gimmick
item that is thrown away or used up.
The resources offered here, knowledge gained and contacts
made will continue to be helpful for years. This is one of
the few shareware products that offers much more value in
learning opportunity and material items than the price paid.
Our registered version (described later in detail) is the
largest centralized source of free health items (1300+) in the
U.S. available on disk. Most other freebie listings
contain items that require an S.A.S.E. envelope or 25 cents
to $1.50. They usually don't provide toll free numbers and/or
complete addresses so you may write and save the long distance
charges. This is not true with HealthFreebies. There is never
any charge to request any of our items.
One thing which is very important to remember and is also the main
purpose of HealthFreebies is its educational value. It should be
used as a resource to the health industry and answers to general
health problems. Although it's nice to have free material items,
it's more valuable to learn about health problems and where to
find the best information. All the organizations listed here have
many other health resources in addition to free items. Some have a
charge, however, they are reasonable. Services include referrals to
physicians and other health professionals, consultations, helping
form friendships with others with similar health problems, lists of books,
hospitals, treatments centers, research reports, videos, tapes, and more.
With their general packet of information is a complete list of how they
can help and what they offer.
For those of you that find this text familiar, I am also the
author of CompuFreebies, my other shareware file. Some of the
instructions here are the same as CompuFreebies as the concepts
are similar. However, there are a few important differences
so please read on. CompuFreebies is of a more technical nature and
therefore more explanation was necessary. It also has excellent booklets
available and as I feel that learning is very valuable I try to include
as many booklets as possible in my shareware and registered versions.
I was happy and also surprised to learn that there were even more
health-related free publications available than computer-related.
Computers are an expensive investment and learning about them is
important, however learning about health is much more important and
even crucial. For this reason I've included many publications here.
What's so good about publications, you may ask? Often many innocent
looking booklets and even scraps of paper hold answers and solutions
for those willing to 'mine' their treasures. It may be one simple
phone number that leads us to an expert or another organization that
can help us. Often new worlds lie behind 7 digits of a phone number
or 3 lines of an address. Countless times a chance call has led me to
sources for many Freebies to include in my products. The main idea here
is not to boast about my products but to stress how important it is
to have a well-ordered source of information to serve as a starting
point and foundation for our problem-solving journeys. Ordinarily when
information is scattered about and inconvenient to work with it is
frustrating to the average person. Not everyone is a professional
researcher. HealthFreebies was designed for the average person with
little time that wants quick answers to medical and health problems.

HOW IS THIS FILE ORGANIZED
All companies offering free items are organized by health-related
categories. In each category (alcohol, cancer, heart, etc.) you'll
find an organization offering a free item, usually a booklet, free
information, posters or referrals to experts. On the right are some
bonus items that are not health-related.
ABOUT DESCRIPTIONS USED HERE
Descriptions used here are used as a general guide to the free item.
The categories are self-explanatory and the titles of the free
items will usually describe the contents very well. For example, "You and
Your Heart" would typically cover the main problems associated with
heart disease and how to prevent it. There is often too much information
in a health booklet to describe it well enough with a few sentences.
In addition, it's always better to obtain all the booklets in a category
(if more than one is available here) and compare for yourself.
A convenient listing such as this with toll free numbers provides
individuals with a great opportunity to explore and come across
a health solution. Some organizations with good health information
may not take out an ad in magazines or newspapers, therefore you
may never hear about them besides here. We have many unadvertised
free health items listed, especially in the registered version.
No purchase is required at any time from any organization. Take as
much time as necessary to review the booklets and other material
carefully. Only ask for what is really necessary as most things are
expensive for them to produce, especially for mail and handling.
WHY DO ORGANIZATION GIVE AWAY SO MUCH?
With government organizations we have already paid for the free
items with tax money. The government has access to excellent research
and produces countless books and brochures on many subjects.
Charities also raise millions to provide people with the latest health
information. They all honestly do wish to help people and publications
is one way they achieve this.
HOW DID HEALTHFREEBIES COME ABOUT
After looking through many health publications and guides I found that
they either dealt with only one or two types of health/medical topics or
were too general and did not go deeply into specific health/medical topics
well enough. Very few are ordered by health topic or disease. Some have
phone numbers to call (usually not toll free) but with no instructions
on the best way to reach the right area. Others have addresses but no
phone numbers. Many list organizations but not the services or items
offered. I then set out to combine the best features of all these
guides and fill the void by offering a broad range of health/medical
topics along with specifics for each topic, organizing by health
categories/diseases for easy access, always including phone numbers (if
available), good instructions showing how to reach the right area and
request information/items, and finally, written in plain language
so anyone can understand.
A WORD ABOUT FREE HOSPITAL CARE
While researching HealthFreebies I came across some organizations
that have set up hospitals in many cities of the U.S. that provide
free health care, including major operations, for children. It's
true! You do not have to join anything or pay for the services. You
do not have to meet any guidelines or have a certain income. It's
all privately funded. However, not every type of service is covered.
Exactly where to go and how to contact them is explained in the
registered version. I wanted to explain this in detail here before
you've seen the catalog description of the registered version as it
may sound too good to be true.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<< BEFORE CALLING, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING >>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
You'll speak with the area most knowledgeable about the free item so
obtaining them should be very easy. If an organization has a toll-free
number it is listed here. If there is no toll-free number there is always
an address included to request the item in writing. Almost always the
first person that answers the phone will send the item. They are more than
happy to send the item as they genuinely want to help and sending out
information is one of the main activities of these organizations. If by
chance someone appears not to recognize the title of the item you're
requesting, ask to speak with the Public Information or Public Affairs dept.
If anyone asks how you heard about their organization mention Infolist
catalog. Usually, items will arrive very quickly. If not, after 15 days
you can call again. To keep track, it's a good idea to note the date called
and the date item was received. Also write down names of any contacts.
Soon you'll have a listing of helpful people in the health industry.
Everything on this list is currently available however, some free items
don't last forever. But to make sure that an item is truly not
available (if you've been told so) you can try the following:
Call in about an hour and request the item again to make
sure. Perhaps when you called the first time you may have
reached someone who didn't feel like filling out a form or
thought that the free offer expired or was new. If this happens,
(it shouldn't happen but I mention it just in case) do not repeat
what was said the first time. You can mention that you heard about
them (or their item) from a magazine, a friend or you're unsure
where, or anything else you can think of - you happened to jot down
their phone number a while ago but forgot where you saw their name.
Most of the organizations listed here are in the Eastern time zone
and have 9 to 5pm hours. 12:30 to 1:00pm is the busiest time.
SOME NEAT PHONE TRICKS.
(Can be used in trying to reach any company or organization you will ever
call - not just those listed here!)
In choosing companies and organizations for this listing, I made
sure that anyone calling would not have any inconveniences or
aggravation. If I was placed on hold too long or transferred too
many times, or for whatever reason the free item was not easily
obtainable, I did not include them. But I thought I'd mention some
telephone tactics which might be helpful for those who spend a
lot of time on the phone.
If no 800 # is listed for any organization try calling 800 555 1212,
directory assistance, before dialing a long distance no. There might
be a toll-free no. available. However, you needn't worry about this here
as only a few companies listed here have no toll free number. In those
cases addresses are included. If you ever need more than one 800
number at a time, write down the company names and ask toll free
information for a few numbers at one time. Compuserve also has a free
area in their system for finding toll free numbers for any company.
Usually, you must have know the exact company name under which the company
has listed their 800 number when trying to find a toll-free number.
Some companies may not want the general public to use their 800 number
to keep costs down so they do not provide it (or advertise it) unless
someone asks.
When calling any company long distance and you're paying for
the call, as soon as someone answers, quickly ask if they have
a toll free 800 number. If they do, you can quickly hang up and
call right back.
HOW TO AVOID BEING PLACED ON HOLD
If placed on hold after dialing an 800 no. you might want to call
again right away. After the 2nd time, or the 3rd or 4th!, you'll
most likely not be placed on hold. You'll most likely reach
another operator that's not so busy. Your time is too valuable
to be placed on hold! Sometimes you may ask someone a question
and they are taking much too long. If you hang up and call
again, you may reach someone with more experience who will find the
answer more quickly.
If you reach a recording asking you to press a number on your touch
tone phone, pressing '0' will often transfer you to the operator,
even if the company's own recording does not mention this. When leaving
a message on a voice mailbox by pressing '#' you'll usually hear some
options. Often the company's own recording may not mention this. You can
then save your message using the right number on your touch tone pad.
Otherwise the message might be lost (not common but why take chances)
if you just hang up. After saving you can then press 0 and be transferred
to another area - all without having to redial and possibly be placed on
hold. This should not happen when requesting any items here, however,
I included it just in case.
HOW TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM CALLING YOU BACK
No one from any organization listed here will contact you again after
requesting the item (unless they do so to providing some other service),
however, sometimes you may request an item and a company asks for a
phone number. You can say any of the following - I am in the field often
and can't be reached, I can't accept calls at work in the day, I am
not near a phone, I can only accept calls after ______(fill in the blank
with a time you're away; lunch hour, after work, etc.) One person I know
would give a fax number out. The person calling would think this number
was given in error and not be annoyed.
CONTACTING COMPANIES BY MAIL
You can always write to request anything. Include the
following in a letter: Your name, address, phone and name of
free item(s) with catalog number (if available).
Always include your phone number so they can verify the
correct mailing address if necessary. If you really don't
want to be called, mention that there is no phone at your
location. Also, if you've called a few times and
the item is unavailable, you can try writing as a last
resort. However, I would recommend telephoning the company
whenever possible.

║ REGISTRATION INFORMATION ║
║ ║
║ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
One concern of shareware users is, "Why should I register my file and
what do I receive in return?" The primary concern of all shareware
authors is that you, the shareware user, find our files useful and
valuable. Just from contacting the companies here with little effort
there is a lot that you can receive. You already are familiar with
the wide variety of items and information available in this shareware
version. But what exactly is in the registered version and why do
I feel it is well worth the price of registration?" Following is some of
what is available in the registered version and ALL free with NO 'catches'
or obligation:
o Listing of almost all every health organization and sources
of health information in the U.S.
o List of hospitals across the country that provide FREE
health care for children including major operations
o 1200 free booklets on almost every health topic including:
o 100 booklets on Drugs and Drug prevention
o 51 booklets on Cancer
o 119 booklets on sex transmitted diseases including AIDS
o 38 booklets on alcohol
o All information and free items organized into
51 topics and categories
o 103 health-related posters with many tips
o Obtain almost every free item with a toll-free number
o Some books are 500 pages
o Catalog numbers included for easy ordering
o Detailed research and statistical reports and health studies
o 10 videos Note about experts:
They will answer questions
o Contacts for experts in many diseases from the public by phone.
Contact them directly.
o 29 free sample issues of magazines
o A large section on dog health information - 400+ pages!
o A seperate computer program for eye care. Includes colorful
and detailed images of eyes and actual exercises to help
improve eyesight
o Large section on backache problems and prevention. Loaded with
helpful information.
Finally, one way to know for sure whether the $20.00 price for
registration is really worth it to you is to do the following. For
each of the items described above next to the small 'o' place a dollar
value. What is each item worth to you? Simply go down the list
and assign your own value to each item. Although this is a quick way
to see what the registered version is actually worth to you - there is
something that is not so easy to measure right now - the value of what
you can learn over the years. That is something you will find out over
time by using the registered version. I can guarantee you that you would
have more than enough health-related information to keep you busy for
quite a while.
What about the phone numbers and addresses in the list? Are they accurate?
Because the information is on a diskette it is easily updated. Many free
item listings sold today are on paper. They are not easy to update. Also,
many other "Freebie" listings require a stamped, self-addressed envelope,
or 25 cents to $3.00 to obtain their 'free' items. With our listing
all you need is a telephone, some time and a large mail box.
HOW IS THE REGISTERED VERSION ORGANIZED
The registered version is ordered exactly the same way as you
see here in category order but with many more companies and organizations!
There is NO other listing in the U.S. such as this available
on diskette. Complete addresses and phone numbers of almost
every major health organization in the U.S. is available.
Each organization's free items (over 1300!) are listed.
All can be contacted by phone or letter to request info or
free items which they'll gladly send. Most have toll-free
numbers.
To print our catalog press ESC key
and go to CATALOG section on menu. Can print
catalog there - only 5 pages. Do not press P
now, or you will print this entire 42 pages.

║ !!!! SUPPORT THE SHAREWARE CONCEPT !!!! ║
║ ║
║ All the many shareware files available ║
║ have come about through hard work and ║
║ depend mainly on contributions from ║
║ users. It's a great system as there are ║
║ no heavy advertising or other costs as ║
║ with store-bought shareware. These ║
║ savings are passed on to you. ║
║ But to continue offering these ║
║ inexpensive products, shareware authors ║
║ rely on people to register if they have ║
║ found the file useful. ║

SHAREWARE LAUGHS
Here are some jokes and funny stories I've collected over
the last few years. Guaranteed for at least a smile!
True story - author unknown:
A friend of my mother's went to Ohare Airport to pick up her
son who was returning from school. Well, she got to the airport
early, and having skipped lunch she was hungry so she stopped
at one of those snack bars in the airport near the gates. She
bought a package of 4 cookies and a cup of coffee. She walked
over to one of those "stand-up" tables and opened the cookies.
Well, she took out a cookie and started eating it. As she did
this a man who was also at the table took one of the cookies and
began eating it. Well, she gave this man an awful stare (kind
of like "well who do you think you are ") and continued eating
her first cookie and drinking her coffee. Then she took another
cookie (after all she didn't was this strange man eating *all*
of them and she did skip her lunch). Well, as she finished her
cookie the man at the table gingerly took the last cookie and
broke it in half leaving half of it on the wrapper. At this
point (remember, no words have been exchanged between the two
of them) the woman decides to get out of there before this strange
man does something else. So she goes to the gate where her son
is supposed to be coming in. She opened her purse to check the
schedule and what did she find ...... her package of cookies ...
she had put her cookies in her purse and unknowingly was eating
the man's cookies !!!!! HOW EMBARRASSING
A statistician refuses to fly after reading the alarmingly high probability
that there will be a bomb on any given plane. Later he finds that the
probability of there being two bombs on any given flight is very low. Now
whenever he flies, he always carries one bomb with him.
A friend of mine was a frequent user of a pay telephone at a popular truck stop,
and was greatly inconvenienced when the phone went out of commission. Repeated
requests for repair brought only promises. After several days the phone company
was again contacted and told that there was no longer a rush. The phone was
now working fine--except that all money was being returned upon completion of
each call.
A repairman arrived within the hour !!

Some time ago, I was taking a ground school class for private pilots.
During the sessions on weather, the instructor wanted to discuss the
concept of sublimation - the act of going from a gas to a solid skipping
the intermediate stage(s). e.g., frost - water vapor in the air becoming
a solid on surfaces without first going through the liquid stage.
Wanting to see if the class had understood the concept, the instructor
asked if anyone could provide an example of something that went straight
from a solid to a gas (expecting "dry ice" as the answer), a previously
unknown section of my mind took control of my mouth and immediately
emitted the word "burrito."
It took the instructor about 10 minutes to regain an academic composure.
