  18.      De Candole  in  his  Origin  of 
  19. Cultivated Plants,  places garlic as 
  20. a native to the  Kagiz Desert region 
  21. of Siberia.  Nomadic  tribes brought 
  22. it  to  Asia   Minor  and   probably 
  23. China.   From  there  it  reportedly 
  24. went to  India.  Egypt  was probably 
  25. the next stop  after which  it  made 
  26. its  way  to  Europe.   Marco   Polo 
  27. figured into this migration  of  the 
  28. herb  as  probably did the Crusades.

  33. Crusaders must have savored some fine 
  34. cooking using  garlic and carried the 
  35. bulbs back home  to Europe.  Today it 
  36. is grown in all parts of the world.

  40. Israelite slaves  upon fleeing  Egypt  
  41. were  disappointed in  their  diet of 
  42. manna. They wept saying, "We remember
