  7.      The antibacterial properties  of 
  8. garlic have been recognized  for some 
  9. time.   The   Codex   Medicamentarius 
  10. published  in  1758   recommended   a 
  11. tincture of garlic to combat cholera. 
  12. Pasteur  reported   on  the  use   of 
  13. garlic  as  an  antibacterial  agent.

  17.      At  the turn of the century, Dr. 
  18. W.  C.  Minchin,    head    of    the 
  19. tuberculosis ward at  Kells  Hospital 
  20. in Dublin, Ireland, wrote that garlic 
  21. had a remarkably high  cure  rate for 
  22. tuberculosis.  At  the  time,  garlic 
  23. was  used  as   an  inhalant,   taken 
  24.

  28. and ointment.

  31.      At  the  same  time,  Dr.  W. W. 
  32. McDuffin, conducting research in  New 
  33. York City, compared  garlic  with  55 
  34. other treatments for TB and concluded 
  35. that garlic was  the  most  effective 
  36. agent.  Garlic  has been demonstrated 
  37. to     be     bacteriostatic      for 
  38. Mycobacterium  tuberculosis  in   low 
  39. concentrations   and  probably   also
  40. bactericidal   in     higher  concen-
