Title: Running Tutor on a LANtastic Network
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1255-12/93
The purpose of this memo is to give LANtastic network
administrators suggestions for running the Tutor from a network
file server.
In this example a LANtastic 4.0 server is used. The date of
TUTOR.COM is 09/25/91.
For the purposes of this example, it is assumed that Artisoft's
LANtastic operating system is installed on a machine designated
as the file server, and that WordPerfect 5.1 is on that server as
a network application. It is also assumed that all the files
associated with the tutor have been installed in a subdirectory
of the program directory. In many cases this directory is called
LEARN or TUTOR; in this example the directory is called TUTOR.
The steps outlined below will provide a way for five users to run
the tutor simultaneously.
1 Create five users: TU1, TU2, TU3, TU4, and TU5. Make
these users members of a group called TUTOR. Create a
user directory for each user name somewhere on the
server (such as U:\USERS\TU1 and so on).
Create five .BAT files called TU1.BAT, TU2.BAT, TU3.BAT,
TU4.BAT, and TU5.BAT. Store them in the WP51 directory:
C:\LANTASTI\NET USE X: \\SERVERNAME\WP51\TUTOR
C:\LANTASTI\NET USE U: \\SERVERNAME\USER\TU1
SET WPC=/D-U:\ /U-TU1 (or TU2, etc.)
2 The group TUTOR must have all rights in three places:
∙ The TUTOR directory (where all the files
associated with the Tutor are kept)
∙ The SET directory (where their personal *.SET
files are created and stored■this is often a
subdirectory of the WP51 directory)
∙ The personal user directories (such as
U:\USERS\TU1)
These users must have READ, WRITE, LOOKUP, and EXECUTE
privileges in the program directory (where the WP.EXE
file is kept).
3 Attrib the *.WKB and *.TUT files in the TUTOR directory
Read Only.
4 Create a valid and correct environment file in the
WordPerfect program directory. The contents of a valid
environment file are:
/NT=8
/PS=W:\WP51\WPSET
The drive letter (such as W:\) in the .ENV file should
be a common shared-drive letter.
5 Have whoever wants to run the Tutor log in as TU1, TU2,
etc. The TUTORNET.BAT will set up the WordPerfect
program, the Tutor, and all the necessary shared
directories and drives. The user then can execute the
TUTOR from anywhere simply by typing TUTOR.COM.
The temporary files that are created when WordPerfect is executed
are redirected to the user's home directory. For example if a
user logs in as TU1, the temporary files are opened and stored in
the U:\USERS\TU1 directory. The WPTU1}.SET file is opened and
stored in the W:\WP51\WPSET directory. The file that the TUTOR
uses to mark completed lessons is stored in the TUTOR directory.
When a user completes a lesson, this information is stored in a
file called MARKS.WP; it will not be possible to ascertain which
user has completed what lesson.
When the users are finished with a lesson or want to leave the
lesson, they can choose the Exit option from the main screen.
This will close the temporary files, write to the MARKS.WP file
and exit them back to the DOS prompt.
If more users wish to execute the TUTOR simultaneously, simply
increase the number of users that belong to the TUTOR group.
