  11. You want to set up labels in WordPerfect 5.1 for a laser printer.
  12.  
  13.  
  14. Concept
  15. Using the Paper Size/Type feature of WordPerfect, you can set up
  16. labels of varying sizes.
  17.  
  18. The 05/31/91 interim release of WordPerfect 5.1 includes a macro
  19. called LABELS.WPM.  This macro automates label formatting, and it
  20. simplifies many of the steps presented in this document.  Refer
  21. to InfoShare document #1222 for instructions on using the labels
  22. macro.

  25. Solution
  26. Set up a Paper Size/Type that will fit your particular labels.
  27.  
  28. 1     Press Format (Shift+F8), then choose Page (2).
  29.  
  30. 2     Choose Paper Size (7).
  31.  
  32. For this example, we will create a new label paper size.
  33.  
  34. 3     Choose Add (Create) (2), then choose Other (9).
  35.  
  36. 4     Type a descriptive name for your labels, then press Enter.
  37.  
  38. 5     Choose Location (5).  Determine whether your labels will be
  39.       fed into the printer continuously, through a paper bin, or
  40.       manually.  Choose the proper location.
  41.  
  42. 6     Choose Prompt to Load (4). If you choose Yes, then you will
  43.       be prompted to load a new label each time you send a new
  44.       print job to the printer.  If you choose No, it will
  45.       automatically be sent from WordPerfect.
  46.  
  47. 7     Choose Labels (8), then type Y to define your label size.
  48.  
  49. You are now in the Format: Labels screen.
  50.  
  51. 8     Choose Label Size (1).
  52.  
  53. The default settings are for a 3 by 10 sheet of labels (3 across
  54. and 10 down).  For this example, we will set up labels that are 2
  55. 3/4" by 2 3/4".
  56.  
  57. 9     Type 2.75 for Width and press Enter.  Then type 2.75 for
  58.       Height and press Enter.
  59.  
  60. 10    Choose Number of Labels (2), then type 3 for Columns and
  61.       press Enter.  Then type 3 for Rows and press Enter.
  62.  
  63. Our labels will print 9 to a page: 3 across and 3 down.
  64.  
  65. 11    Choose Top Left Corner (3).
  66.  
  67. You now need to determine exactly where your label begins. 
  68. Measure from the top of your 8 1/2" by 11" page to the top of the
  69. first label.  You can enter the measurement in fractions or
  70. decimals.  For this example, we will enter one measurement in
  71. fractions and one in decimals so you can see how each works.
  72.  
  73. 12    Type 9/16 for the Top measurement and press Enter.  This
  74.       represents the fraction 9/16.  Notice that it is
  75.       automatically converted into a decimal format.
  76.  
  77. 13    Type .125 for the Left measurement and press Enter.  The
  78.       decimal will remain as you typed it.
  79.  
  80. Next, you need to determine the measurement between the columns
  81. of labels (left to right) and the measurement between rows of
  82. labels (top to bottom).
  83.  
  84. 14    Choose Distance Between Labels (4).  
  85.  
  86. 15    Type 0 for the Column and press Enter.  This indicates that
  87.       there is no space between the labels.
  88.  
  89. 16    Type .25 for the Row and press Enter.  This indicates that
  90.       each label is .25" down from the previous one.
  91.  
  92. 17    Choose Label Margins (5).
  93.  
  94. You can set any margins you want.  The text will be printed on
  95. each label according to the margins that you set.
  96.  
  97. 18    Enter the desired Left, Right, Top, and Bottom label
  98.       margins, pressing Enter after each selection.
  99.  
  100. 19    Press Exit (F7).
  101.  
  102. If you set any of the four label margins to zero or any number
  103. smaller than the default margin determined by your printer, the
  104. error message Label margins increased due to printer's minimum
  105. margins will appear.  Each printer has a physical limitation on
  106. how close to each edge it can print.  Your printer will
  107. automatically set your labels to the smallest default setting.
  108.  
  109. You may also see the error message Labels will not fit on paper
  110. size, which indicates that any of the measurements you have
  111. entered are too large for the specified paper size.  You will
  112. need to remeasure your labels and alter the measurements.  The
  113. measurement standards for the Paper Size/Type feature are as
  114. follows:
  115.  
  116. WordPerfect uses a specific equation to see if the labels will
  117. fit.  It multiplies the Height by the Number of Rows, then adds
  118. the Top Left Corner: Top measurement and the Distance Between
  119. Rows to that total.  The final total cannot be larger than the
  120. Height of your paper size; in our example, this is 11 inches.  It
  121. then multiplies the Width by the Number of Columns, then adds the
  122. Top Left Corner: Left measurement and the Distance Between
  123. Columns to that total.  The final total of this equation cannot
  124. be larger than the Width of your paper size; in our example, this
  125. is 8 1/2 inches.

  127. 20    If you got the Labels will not fit on paper size error
  128.       message, make any necessary corrections to the Format: Edit
  129.       Paper Definition screen, then press Exit (F7).  If you got
  130.       the  Label margins increased due to printer's minimum
  131.       margins error message, just press Exit (F7).
  132.  
  133. 21    Press Exit (F7) until you return to the Format: Paper
  134.       Size/Type screen.
  135.  
  136. 22    Make sure that the label size you have just created is
  137.       highlighted, then choose Select (1).
  138.  
  139. 23    Press Exit (F7) to return to the document editing screen.
