Title: Tabs: Spaces Instead of Tab Settings
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1010-10/93
Problem
You have columns or indented text information that does not align
correctly. This may be due to any of the following reasons: (1)
You have added spaces between the tabular columns rather than
using tabs or indents; (2) You have used spaces at the beginning
of the Column feature; (3) You are using a proportionally-spaced
font instead of a fixed-pitch font with tabular or regular
columns; or (4) To indent more than one line of text, you have
pressed Enter at the end of each line and typed spaces at the
left margin to indent the text.
Concept
When you are trying to align text in columns, Tab and Indent
codes create more uniform edges than using the Space Bar.
Additionally, using a fixed-pitch font (such as Courier) instead
of a proportionally spaced font (such as Times Roman) creates
uniform line lengths in columns. When using a fixed-pitch font,
each space is always the same size. When using a proportionally-
spaced font, each character width is different, and depending on
the text used in the lines above and below, the size of each
space may also differ. (NOTE: Some spacing problems may still
occur with the fixed-pitch font.)
Tab codes only indent the first line of a paragraph. Indent
codes indent the whole paragraph.
Solution
You need to replace the spaces with Tab or Indent codes.
1 Press Home, Home, Up.
2 Press Replace (Alt+F2).
3 Choose Yes to confirm each replacement. If you have used
spaces in other ways besides as tabs, you might want to
verify that you are replacing the correct spaces.
or
Choose No to replace without confirmation.
The prompt will ask you to enter what you would like to
search for.
4 Press the Space Bar n times, where n is the number of
consecutive spaces you want to replace with Tab or Indent.
5 Press Search (F2).
The prompt will next ask what you want to replace with.
6 Press Tab, then Search (F2).
or
Press Indent (F4), then Search (F2).
If you selected to confirm the search and replace, WordPerfect
will stop at each occurrence of the search and ask you to confirm
the replacement. If you opted not to confirm, WordPerfect will
just inform you when it has completed the search and replace.
