BootMes v1.0s - Documentation
BootMes is a program that will allow you to put a customized
message onto the boot sector of your data diskettes that will
be displayed everytime a computer is booted from that diskette.
The message can be 353 characters long and may contain all ascii
characters including LF and CR. The boot record information is
preserved and the program will not allow you to put a message on
a bootable diskette.
The message that is put on the boot sector is stored in the
file BOOTMES.SAG (a sample is included). If BootMes can't find
this file, either in the default directory or in the path, it
will exit with an error. BOOTMES.SAG is a plain textfile that
you can edit with your favorite editor. If the message is larger
than 353 characters it will be truncated to make room for a
little copyright notice.
This version of the program is shareware and you may use it at
your own risk. However, please copy it and share it with others.
You can, if you like, send your contribution, an amount of $8,
to me Jon Orri Leosson at my address listed at the end of this
document. By contributing you will encourage further developing
of this program and receive an enhanced version that puts no
copyright notice on the boot sector and can therefore handle a
message of 396 characters instead of 353. By becoming a
contributor you will receive 2 other programs, a command line
utility that reads the message on the boot sector and writes it
to the screen, and a program that reads the boot sector on a
diskette and displays it to screen. I personally look at this
program as an extension to the label mechanism in DOS with disk
labels of about 400 ascii characters instead of 11.
Thinking of further development some ideas came to my mind.
A feature that will make the program recognize valid DOS boot
sectors and if it isn't the diskette is most likely infected
with a virus. Another feature that will enable larger boot
messages, even a whole screen that could be useful for an ad.
I tested this program for some time with DD 360K, DD 720K and
HD 1440K diskettes and everything went well, mainly because the
program transfers the boot record from the old boot sector to the
new boot sector, preserving the information that are stored
there. If you have any comments regarding this program or a bug
to report then go ahead and send it with your contribution and
remember to include your address.
