  49.  INTRODUCTION
  50. VIEW_MAN  is a utility to display,  edit and/or print a selected file  in 
  51. both Hex and ASCII. 
  52.  
  53. It has a variety of options, among which are:
  54.  
  55. *·View  the selected file in Hex and ASCII simultaneously,  with  options 
  56.   to:   view any specific location,  search for and display  a  Hex/ASCII 
  57.   string,   and  search  for and count the number  of  occurrences  of  a 
  58.   specific string. 
  59. *·Edit  the selected file in either Hex or ASCII,  with options to:  view 
  60.   and the edit any specific location,  search for and display a Hex/ASCII 
  61.   string,   search for and count the number of occurrences of a  specific 
  62.   string,   and  search  for  a specific string and replace  all  of  its 
  63.   occurrences with another. 
  64. *·Globally  modify  the file by making it all upper or  lower  case,   or 
  65.   changing all words to proper - first letter of each word capitalized. 
  66. *·Edit the files date and/or time.
  67. *·Print the selected file in Hex and ASCII simultaneously,  with  options 
  68.   to:  print only a specific block of the file,  direct the output to any 
  69.   serial  or parallel port or to a disk file,  and optionally  print  the 
  70.   ASCII control characters. 
  71. *·Printed output includes a header of file and print information. 
  72. *·Printed  output to a disk file may be printed by the utility  LASR_MAN, 
  73.   at up to sixteen text pages per sheet, to conserve paper. 
  74. *·Searches may be case sensitive or insensitive. 
  75. *·Optionally  backup the selected file before editing:  optionally  erase 
  76.   the backup file before exiting the program. 
  77. *·No limit on the selected file size for viewing or editing.
  78. *·A macro may be defined through a "learning" process and then repeatedly 
  79.   run. 
  80. *·Program options may be saved.

  82.  MAIN MENU

  113. ═>To select a FUNCTION  and  have  its option  menu displayed,  press its 
  114. highlighted  letter or move the highlight bar to it using the arrow  keys 
  115. and press [┘].

  117. Any FUNCTION may be accessed from the MAIN MENU, or any  option menu,  by 
  118. pressing its [highlight letter] or [ALT][highlight letter].
  119.  
  120.  SETUP MENU
  121.            The ╔═══╡ SETUP FUNCTION ╞═══╗ MENU includes:
  122.                ╚════════════════════════╝
  123. DATA PATH...........Change  either the drive and/or the directory path to 
  124.                     the data file to be processed.
  125. FILE SELECT.........Select the data file to be processed.
  126. MONITOR.............Toggle the display between monochrome,  CGA color  (8 
  127.                     background colors) and EGA/VGA color (16 background). 
  128. MENU COLORS.........Change the colors of any of the eight menu types.
  129. EDIT PRINT..........Edits transparent print data control strings.
  130. SAVE OPTIONS........Save the current program option settings.
  131.  
  132. ═>To  select  a SETUP OPTION,  press its highlighted letter or  move  the 
  133. highlight bar to it and press [┘]. 
  134.  
  135. ═>To select a MAIN MENU FUNCTION, press its highlighted letter. 
  136.  
  137.  CHANGE DATA PATH
  138. This  option will set the drive and directory,  from which files may then 
  139. be selected for processing. 
  140. The DRIVE MENU displays all valid drives, "A" thru LASTDRIVE,  as defined 
  141. by CONFIG.SYS. 
  142.  
  143. Those  drives  that are CAPITALIZED are currently available,   while  the 
  144. lower case drives are not. 
  145.  
  146. The current DRIVE is highlighted.
  147.  
  148. ═>To select the DATA PATH DRIVE, press its highlighted letter or move the 
  149. highlight bar to it and press [┘].
  150. The  SUBDIRECTORY PICK LIST displays the available subdirectories of  the 
  151. currently defined drive/directory DATA PATH. 
  152.  
  153. The "accept path" option will accept the DATA PATH as currently displayed 
  154. to the right of the DIRECTORY DATA PATH option. 
  155.  
  156. The ". [root dir]" option (if shown) will reset the DATA PATH to the root 
  157. directory of the current drive. 
  158.  
  159. The  "..  [parent]"  option (if shown)  will remove the last subdirectory 
  160. that was added to the DATA PATH. 
  161.  
  162. Pressing   [highlight  letter] will move the highlight bar to  the  first 
  163. subdirectory whose name starts with that letter.
  164.  
  165. ═>To select  one of these options or to add another subdirectory  to  the 
  166. DATA PATH, move the highlight bar to the desired item and press [┘]. 
  167.  
  168.  FILE SELECT
  169. When the FILES SELECT option is selected,  a  PICK LIST of files from the 
  170. selected drive/directory is displayed.  All files (up to 75   per display 
  171. screen) on the current drive-directory are displayed in the PICK LIST. If 
  172. there are no files on the directory, a message is so displayed. 
  173.  
  174. ═>To  change  the selected drive/directory, first press [ESCAPE] and then 
  175. press 'D' to switch to the DATA PATH option menu.
  176.  
  177. ═>To select a FILE for processing, move the highlight bar to it and press 
  178. [┘].
  179. ═>To leave the currently selected file as is, press [ESCAPE].
  180.  
  181.  MONITOR
  182. This  option  will toggle the display between monochrome,  CGA  color  (8 
  183. background colors) and EGA/VGA color (16 background). 
  184.  
  185.  CHANGE MENU COLORS MENU
  186. The  CHANGE  MENU  COLORS MENU options include the eight  TYPES  OF  MENU 
  187. windows used by VIEW_MAN and a default colors reset. 
  188.  
  189. ═>To reset all of the menu colors to the original defaults, press [D].
  190.  
  191. ═>To  change  the  colors of a MENU TYPE window,  press  its  highlighted 
  192. letter or move the highlight bar to it and press [┘]. 
  193.  
  194. A  sample menu window with the current colors is displayed.  This  sample 
  195. will show how the menu will appear as the colors are changed. 
  196.  
  197. ═>To  change  the BACKGROUND COLORS,  use the [UP] and [DOWN] arrow keys. 
  198. There are sixteen background colors. 
  199.  
  200. ═>To change the FOREGROUND COLORS, use the [LEFT] and [RIGHT] arrow keys. 
  201. There are sixteen foreground colors. 
  202.  
  203. ═>To accept the menu color change,  press [┘]. The display will then  be 
  204. refreshed to show the changed colors. 
  205.  
  206.  EDIT PRINT
  207. The  TRANSPARENT  PRINT  DATA  CONTROL STRINGS allow  printing  of  ASCII 
  208. control characters (0-32) by printer that support this feature. VIEW_MAN, 
  209. as  normally distributed, will print the control characters with Hewlett-
  210. Packard  DeskJet/LaserJet  printers or compatibles.  The START string  is 
  211. "[ESC]&p1X" and the END string is null.  If your printer does not support 
  212. this  control  code,  check your printer manual and replace  it  with the 
  213. appropriate code(s). 
  214.  
  215. ═>To change the START CODE,  edit the CONTROL STRING displayed as desired 
  216. using the action keys shown on the bottom help line. 
  217. ═>To cancel the changes made, press [ESCAPE].
  218. ═>To accept the CONTROL STRING as edited, press [┘]. 
  219.  
  220. The END CODE CONTROL STRING can then be edited in a similar manner. 
  221.  
  222.  SAVE OPTIONS
  223. The  various VIEW_MAN program option settings,  such as MENU  COLORS  and 
  224. CASE SENSITIVE option may be saved to an option file, VIEW_MAN.CFG, which 
  225. is then processed when the program is loaded.  These options will replace 
  226. the program default options normally set. 
  227.  
  228. ═>To  save  the current program option settings,  press [O] or  move  the 
  229. highlight bar to  it and press [┘]. An option file save complete message 
  230. will be displayed. Press any key to continue. 
  231.  
  232.  VIEW FILE
  233. The VIEW FILE Function has no option menu. The selected file is displayed 
  234. in  both  Hex  - on the left - and ASCII - on the right  -  with  sixteen 
  235. characters per line and twenty line per display.  The character  position 
  236. in the file of the beginning character of each line is given on the left.
  237.  
  238. VIEW cursor keys that are active include:
  239.  
  240. [Pdn][┘]........Display the next page of the file.
  241. [Pup]............Display the previous page of the file.
  242. [Home]...........Go to the start of the file.
  243. [End]............Go to the end of the file.
  244.  
  245. VIEW options that are available and which are described below include:
  246.  
  247. [F3] GoTo........Position the file at a specific location.
  248. [F4] SetSrch.....Set/edit the search string.
  249. [F5] Srch........Search the file FORWARD for a defined string.
  250. [SHIFT][F5] Srch.Search the file BACKWARDfor a defined string.
  251. [F6] SrchCnt.....Count the occurrences of a defined string in the file.
  252. [F10] Done.......Exit the VIEW Function.
  253.  GOTO [F3]
  254.  
  255. The  GOTO  VIEW  option  will position the file  display  at  a  specific 
  256. location. 
  257.  
  258. ═>To  GOTO  a specific file location,  press [F3].  A  data entry box  is 
  259. displayed  on the top line position,  containing the current file display 
  260. position.  Edit this display for the desired file position and then press 
  261. [┘]. 
  262.  
  263. ═>To  cancel  the  GOTO  option after its selection and  leave  the  file 
  264. display in its current position, press [ESCAPE]. 
  265.  SET SEARCH [F4]
  266.  
  267. The  SET  SEARCH  entry  window may be called on its own or  it  will  be 
  268. displayed  when  either SEARCH or SEARCH AND COUNT are selected  and  the 
  269. SEARCH string has not been defined.
  270.  
  271. The SET SEARCH options include:
  272.  
  273. [F2] Hex/ASC...Toggle the search STRING entry between Hex/ASCII.
  274. [F3] Case......Toggle the CASE SENSITIVE search option between Yes/No.
  275. [F5] Search....Search the file FORWARD for the defined STRING.
  276. [SHIFT][F5] Search....Search the file BACKWARD for the defined STRING.
  277. [F6] Count.....Count the occurrences of the defined STRING in the file.
  278. [F10] Cancel...Cancel defining the SEARCH STRING and return to file VIEW.
  279.  
  280. ═>To cancel SETting the SEARCH string, press [ESCAPE].
  281.  
  282. ═>To SET the SEARCH STRING,  toggle the entry to Hex/ASCII as desired and 
  283. then enter the desired data.  When the SEARCH STRING is SET,  select  the 
  284. desired option. 
  285.  SEARCH [F5]
  286.  
  287. The SEARCH  option will SEARCH the file FORWARD from the current  display 
  288. position for the defined SEARCH STRING.  The file display will have  show 
  289. the  next  occurrence  of  the  SEARCH string in the upper  left  of  the 
  290. display. 
  291.  
  292. ═>To  SEARCH the file BACKWARD from the current display position,   press 
  293. [SHIFT][F5]. 
  294.  
  295. If  the  SEARCH  string  is not located,   an  informational  message  is 
  296. displayed and the file display is not changed. Press any key to continue.
  297.  SEARCH AND COUNT [F6]
  298.  
  299. The  SEARCH AND COUNT will SEARCH the entire file for the defined  SEARCH 
  300. STRING and display the total number of its occurrences. The file position 
  301. and display are not changed.  After the count is displayed, press any key 
  302. to continue. 
  303.  
  304.  EDIT MENU 
  305.            The ╔═══╡ EDIT FUNCTION ╞═══╗ MENU includes:

  307. BACKUP BEFORE EDIT..Backup the selected file before editing.
  308. EDIT FILE...........Edit the selected file.
  309. EDIT SIZE...........Change the selected file's size.
  310. EDIT DATE...........Change the selected file's date stamp.
  311. EDIT TIME...........Change the selected file's time stamp.
  312. GLOBALLY MODIFY.....Make a global change to the selected file.
  313.  
  314. ═>To  select  a  EDIT OPTION,  press its highlighted letter or  move  the 
  315. highlight bar to it and press [┘]. 
  316.  
  317. ═>To select a MAIN MENU FUNCTION, press its highlighted letter. 
  318.  
  319.  BACKUP BEFORE EDIT
  320. A  backup of the selected file may be made before it is  modified.   This 
  321. backup  is saved on the same drive-directory as the selected file,   with 
  322. the same name and an extension of ".BK!". This option is highlighted if a 
  323. backup does not exist. 
  324.  
  325. ═>To make a backup of the selected file be fore editing, press [B].  If a 
  326. backup  already exists,  and informational message will be displayed.  To 
  327. cancel the backup, press [ESCAPE]; to continue with the backup, press any 
  328. other key. 
  329.  
  330. After the backup is made, an informational message is displayed followed 
  331. by the EDIT window display.
  332.  
  333.  EDIT FILE
  334. The selected file is displayed in both Hex - on the left - and ASCII - on 
  335. the right - with sixteen characters per line and twenty line per display. 
  336. The  character  position  in the file of the beginning character of  each 
  337. line is given on the left.  A  block cursor will appear in either the Hex 
  338. or ASCII data, depending on the current edit mode. 
  339. EDIT cursor keys that are active include:
  340.  
  341.     [Pdn][┘]......Display the next page of the file.
  342.     [Pup]..........Display the previous page of the file.
  343.     [Home].........Go to the first character of this display block.
  344.     [End]..........Go to the last character of this display block.
  345.     [Ctrl]+[Home]..Display the first block of the file.
  346.     [Ctrl]+[End]...Display the last block of the file.

  348. EDIT options that are available and which are described below include:

  350.     [F2] Hx/AS.....Toggle the Hex/ASCII edit mode. 
  351.     [F3] GoTo......Position the file at a specific location.
  352.     [F4] Set.......Set/edit the search string.
  353.     [F5] Srch......Search the file FORWARD for a defined string.
  354.     [SHIFT][F5] Srch..Search the file BACKWARD for a defined string.
  355.     [F6] SrchCnt...Count the occurrences of a defined string in the file.
  356.     [F7]·SrchRep...Replace  all  occurrences of a defined string in  the 
  357.                    file with another defined string. 
  358.     [F10] Done.....Exit the EDIT Function.
  359.  DISPLAY BLOCK CHANGE MENU
  360.  
  361. When any edit change has been made to the current display block,  and the 
  362. display is to be changed, a DISPLAY BLOCK CHANGE menu is displayed. 
  363.  
  364. ═>To ignore the CHANGES made to this BLOCK, press [I].
  365. ═>To save the CHANGES that have been made to this BLOCK, press [W].
  366.  HEX/ASCII [F2]
  367.  
  368. This option will toggle the edit mode between HEX and ASCII.  The current 
  369. mode  is  denoted  by which side of the display the  flashing  cursor  is 
  370. located: HEX on the left side and ASCII on the right. 
  371.  GOTO [F3]
  372.  
  373. The  GOTO  EDIT  option  will position the file  display  at  a  specific 
  374. location. 
  375.  
  376. ═>To  GOTO  a specific file location,  press [F3].  A  data entry box  is 
  377. displayed  on the top line position,  containing the current file display 
  378. position.  Edit this display for the desired file position and then press 
  379. [┘].

  443. [F7]  ReplaceAll.Accept  the REPLACE STRING and search the file  for  all

  445.                with  the REPLACE STRING.
  446. [F10]·Cancel...Cancel  defining  the REPLACE STRING and  return  to  file 
  447.                EDIT. 
  448.  
  449. ═>To SET the REPLACE STRING, toggle the entry to Hex/ASCII as desired and 
  450. then enter the desired data.  When the STRING is SET,  select the desired 
  451. option. 
  452.  SEARCH AND REPLACE - REPLACE [F7]
  453.  
  454. SEARCH  AND REPLACE always works on the full file and will SEARCH for the 
  455. defined SEARCH STRING based on the setting of the CASE SENSITIVE toggle. 
  456.  
  457. When  the  SEARCH  AND  REPLACE operation is complete,  an  informational 
  458. message is displayed. Press any key to continue. 
  459.  INSERT BLOCK [INS]
  460.  
  461. INSERT  will  insert  a block of characters at the position of  the  EDIT 
  462. CURSOR.   The  size of this block is specified in the INSERT  BLOCK  data 
  463. entry  window.  The characters inserted are NULL,  i.e,  they have a  Hex 
  464. value of 00. 
  465.  
  466. ═>To INSERT a block of characters into the file, position the EDIT CURSOR 
  467. at  the desired position and press [INSERT].  The INSERT BLOCK menu  will 
  468. be  displayed.  Edit the number of character to insert at this point  and 
  469. press [┘].  The characters will be inserted into the file and  the  EDIT 
  470. CURSOR will be positioned on the first INSERTED character. 
  471.  
  472. ═>To cancel INSERTING after it is selected, press [ESCAPE].
  473.  DELETE BLOCK [DEL]
  474.  
  475. DELETE  will  delete  a block of characters at the position of  the  EDIT 
  476. CURSOR.   The  size of this block is specified in the DELETE  BLOCK  data 
  477. entry  window.
  478.  
  479. ═>To DELETE a block of characters from the file, position the EDIT CURSOR 
  480. at  the desired position and press [DELETE].  The DELETE BLOCK menu  will 
  481. be  displayed.  Edit the number of character to delete at this point  and 
  482. press  [┘].  The characters will be deleted from the file and  the  EDIT 
  483. CURSOR will be positioned on the first character after the deleted block. 
  484.  
  485. ═>To cancel DELETING after it is selected, press [ESCAPE].
  486.  
  487.  EDIT SIZE

  560. Printer  output  is normally directed to the LPT1  port.   This  toggling 
  561. option allows the printer output to be directed to LPT1-3,  COM1-4, or to 
  562. a disk file, VIEW_MAN.PRN.

  564. ═>To toggle  the OUTPUT TO option,  press the option's highlighted letter 
  565. or move the highlight bar to it and press [┘]. 
  566.  PRINT CONTROL CHARACTERS
  567.  
  568. Control  characters  (ASCII 0-31)  are usually used for  printer  control 
  569. functions and not printed.  However, many printers allow printing control 
  570. characters  when  they  are  preceded and followed  by  specific  control 
  571. character strings.  VIEW_MAN has these strings defined in the OPTION file 
  572. for the  HP  LaserJet printers.  These strings may  be  edited  for other 
  573. printers, by use of the SETUP function. 
  574.  
  575. ═>To toggle whether control characters will be printed, press [C] or move 
  576. the highlight bar to the option and press [┘]. 
  577.  
  578. NOTE: If the output is being directed to a disk file, which will later be 
  579. printed using LASR_MAN, this option should be set to "No".

  581.  PRINT FULL OR SELECTED BLOCK
  582. The full file, or a selected block, is printed in a format similar to the 
  583. display  format,   with  sixteen characters in both Hex and ASCII on each 
  584. line. There is a three line header with file and print information, and a 
  585. blank  line is inserted after every tenth data line.  No pagination (form 
  586. feeds) are included. 
  587.  
  588. An  action  message  is displayed during printing showing  the  character 
  589. position printed/last character position to print. 
  590.  
  591. ═>To terminate printing at any time, press [ESCAPE].

  593. After printing is complete,  an informational message is displayed. Press

  595.  DISK FILE EXISTS ...?

  597. Output has been directed to a disk file,  "VIEW_MAN.PRN",  which  already 
  598. exists.   This  selection  menu will determine how that  output  will  be 
  599. handled.

  647.  DEFINE MACRO AND ITS USE
  648. VIEW_MAN  has  the ability to record keystrokes as they are  entered  and 
  649. then "play"  them back on demand.  This MACRO capability can handle up to 
  650. 200  characters.  It is especially useful when the same changes are being 
  651. made to a series of files. 
  652.  
  653. ═>·To start defining a MACRO,  press [ALT]+[D]. The letters 'MD'  will be 
  654. displayed  in  the upper right corner and an informational  message  will 
  655. also be displayed. Now press the desired sequence of keys. Each key press 
  656. will cause a beep, signifying the recording of the MACRO.

  658. ═>·To end the MACRO definition,  press [ALT]+[D] again.   The upper right 
  659. letters  will change to 'M√',  to signify the MACRO is recorded and ready 
  660. to run, and an informational message will be displayed.

  662. ═>·To run the MACRO,  press [ALT]+[D].  The recorded keys are played back 
  663. in  the same order as they were originally entered.  There is no  message 
  664. displayed.
