"GRAB Plus is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,

GRAB Plus is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful
and find that you are using GRAB Plus and continue to use GRAB
Plus after a reasonable trial period, you must make a registration
payment of $39.95 to ZPAY Payroll Systems. The $39.95
registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another.
Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
same time.
Commercial users of GRAB Plus must register and pay for their
copies of GRAB Plus within 30 days of first use or their license
is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by
contacting ZPAY Payroll Systems.
Anyone distributing GRAB Plus for any kind of remuneration must
first contact ZPAY Payroll Systems at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted
to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its
guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
begin offering GRAB Plus immediately (However ZPAY Payroll Systems
must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
up-to-date with the latest version of GRAB Plus.).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of GRAB Plus along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users
will receive a copy of the latest version of the GRAB Plus system.

INTRODUCTION TO GRAB Plus
-------------------------
GRAB Plus is an enhanced package of programs that build on the popular
memory resident envelope addressor GRAB. Included with GRAB is GRABDB, a
database program that works hand-in-hand with GRAB, capable of printing
labels for laser printers, and PopGDB a TSR that pops-up the GRABDB
database program over other DOS applications.
GRAB The Envelope Addressor for DOS Applications Have you ever wanted to
take the name and address from a letter in your favorite text-based word
processor and print it on your envelope? Well, GRAB can do it. GRAB, a
memory resident program, lets you "grab" the address in your letter and
print it on an envelope in as little as two keystrokes.
GRAB now has style sheets. You can select different style sheets for
different printers and different comment lines, without having to re-
configure GRAB.
GRAB will print postal bar codes on your envelopes, automatically when
addresses have the "ZIP + 4" or "ZIP +6" codes.
GRAB will print graphic logos from graphic suppliers on your envelopes.
GRABDB Database
With GRABDB database, you can maintain a file of names and addresses for
easy retrieval for use with GRAB the envelope addressor. It will
automatically form the address in different formats by your selection.
GRABDB has been created so users of GRAB the envelope addressor can turn
their data files into a powerful label printing system. GRABDB lets you
take data files from GRABDB database and print labels on your LaserJet
printer. It recognizes the "tag" selection fields of GRABDB and will
select by tags if you like.
You can use different label formats from Avery as well as using soft
fonts for added impact to your mailings. GRABDB comes with a sample set
of soft fonts to show you how your labels can have a creative appearance
for greater impact.
1-4
PopGDB allows you to pop-up the GRABDB database program over other DOS
applications.
We point out that PopGDB cannot be used from the DOS
prompt. You must be in another DOS application, such as a
word processor, to be able to use it. If you were at the DOS
prompt, there would be no need to pop it up since you can
simply run GRABDB from the DOS prompt anyway.
What's great about PopGDB is that you can be in your word processor,
call PopGDB to find an address, pop-up GRAB to print an envelope, and
then (after exiting GRAB and GRABDB) paste the address in the word
processor using GRAB's "paste" hot-keys.

ABOUT THIS MANUAL
-----------------
Since we designed GRAB Plus to be as easy to use as possible, we have also
designed this manual to be the same. You should not have to read the
entire manual before you start.
If you are like us, you want to jump right in and start using the program.
You may not open the manual except to read about the program's features in
the introduction and find out how to install the program.
Also, because of publishing deadlines, there may be some late-breaking
information about the program that could not be included in this manual at
the time of printing. Look on the GRAB Plus distribution disks to see if
there are any files named "READ ME". If so, you can print it for any new
information not contained in this manual.
We have designed this manual to be used as a reference.
First-Time Users of GRAB Plus
If you are a first-time user of GRAB Plus, we recommend you read these
sections:

INSTALLATION
2-2
2-3
INSTALLING GRAB Plus
At-A-Glance
--------------------
Installing GRAB Plus requires these simple steps:
Step 1
Copy the GRAB Plus distribution disk.
Step 2
Run the INSTALL program to unpack the GRAB Plus programs to your drive.
Step 3
Select a style sheet to configure GRAB Plus to the printer you will be
using.
That's it! You are ready to use GRAB Plus!
Later
You can change the configuration of GRAB Plus at any time later if you wish.
It's that easy.
- For DOS GRAB, run the "GRABCFG" program from the DOS command line
(within the directory of your GRAB files). You can change the hot-key
or command-keys, printer, return addresses, fonts, printing locations,
colors, etc.
2-4
Step 1 - Copy the GRAB Plus Distribution Disks
We are assuming that you know how to use ordinary DOS commands with your
computer. Refer to your computer's DOS manual if you have any questions
about the commands you will need to use.
Copy your GRAB Plus distribution disk to make a back-up copy to use for
installation. Do not use your original GRAB Plus distribution disk for
installation. Use the copy you will make and store the original disk in a
safe place.
- If you are familiar with the procedure to copy disks, you can skip to the
installation procedure.
Have ready a double-sided double-density (DS-DD) blank floppy disk
formatted with the DOS format. Label it "GRAB Plus Back-Up".
- The blank formatted disk must be the same type as your GRAB Plus
distribution disk, either a 5-1/4 inch or 3-1/2 inch disk.
Write-protect your original GRAB Plus distribution disk to prevent any
existing files from being accidentally changed or erased. Use the DOS
DISKCOPY command to copy the disk:
- Type "DISKCOPY A: A:" and press RETURN.
Follow the prompts on the screen to copy the disks:
- The "source" disk is your original GRAB Plus distribution disk. This
is the disk you copy from.
- The "target" disk is your blank formatted disk. It is the disk you
copy to.
You will copy the "Source" disk (the GRAB Plus distribution disk) to the
"Target" disk (your back-up disk).
When you have made your back-up copy of the GRAB Plus distribution disk,
store the original distribution disk in a cool, dry place.
2-5
Step 2 - Run The Install Program
Before you can use GRAB Plus you have to run the install program so it will
work properly on your computer.
You cannot just copy the files on the distribution disks to your hard disk.
The files on the distribution disk are packed in a special way to save
space. The install program unpacks those files and builds them on your
working disk.
GRAB Plus will give you these expanded installation choices:
Install GRAB Plus
Modify AUTOEXEC.BAT file
Finished
Install GRAB Plus
This selection will install everything from the GRAB Plus System. This
includes GRABDB the database and PopGDB.
Modify AUTOEXEC.BAT file
This selection will add the command to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so
GRAB will load automatically when you start up your computer.
Finished
This selection will exit the installation process.
Configure GRAB To Your Printer
You will need to select a style sheet that corresponds to the printer you
will be using.
- For DOS GRAB you will need to run the "GRABCFG" program to select
a style sheet that corresponds to the printer you will be using.
2-6
Step 2 (continued)
Installation to Your Hard Drive
Place the back-up copy (you made in Step 1) of GRAB Plus in your floppy
drive "A".
- Type "A:INSTALL" and press RETURN.
If you have a monochrome monitor, type "A:INSTALL -M".
The GRAB Plus installation program will do several things that are
necessary for proper operation of the GRAB Plus programs:
- It will ask you for the hard disk drive designation on which to
install GRAB Plus.
- It will create a directory named "\GRABPLUS" on your hard disk.
- It will unpack the necessary files and place them onto your
\GRABPLUS directory.
- It will give you a menu selection for the opportunity to choose
whether you want commands placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so
that GRAB Plus automatically loads into memory each time you turn
on your computer. (This is the easiest way to have GRAB Plus ready
at the touch of a key.)
- It will notify you when the installation is completed.
- When it is finished, you will need to select a style sheet to tell
GRAB Plus what printer you are using. (You must do this before you
run the envelope addressor for the first time.) You can customize
other parts of it now or at any later time.
2-7
Step 3 - Select A Style Sheet
You need to select a style sheet that corresponds to the printer you will
be using.
- For DOS GRAB:
From DOS just change to the directory containing the GRAB files (such as
CD\GRABPLUS) and type:
"GRABFG" and press RETURN.
NOTE! If you make changes using the configuration program
while GRAB is resident in memory, the changes will not be
effective until GRAB is loaded into memory again.
CAUTION
If you had loaded another TSR program (such
as SideKick) after you had loaded GRAB, you
cannot unload GRAB from memory. You will
have to unload any other TSR programs in the
order of "last-in-first-out". Then you can
unload GRAB.
When you start the configuration program GRABCFG, it will ask if you want
to read the current configuration.
Enter "Y" to display a pick list of existing style sheets. Select the
style sheet that corresponds with the printer you will be using.
Installation Completed
GRAB Plus is installed and ready to use.
Refer to the "Operation" and "Menus" segment of "GRAB The Envelope
Addressor For DOS Applications" and "GRABDB Database" in this manual for
more information about using style sheets.

GRABDB database using PopGDB.
3-5
Loading GRAB Into Memory
IMPORTANT:
Be sure you have configured GRAB with the
GRABCFG program before you start using
GRAB. The program needs important
information about the kind of printer you are
using.
As GRAB loads, you will see a confirmation displayed briefly when it loads
successfully. The hot-key combination to pop-up GRAB when you want to use
it will be displayed briefly as a courtesy reminder.
There are different ways you can load GRAB, depending on how you want
GRAB to be available for printing your envelopes.
* Load GRAB from a DOS command.
* Load GRAB from AUTOEXEC.BAT.
* Load GRAB from BATCH files.
Load GRAB From A DOS Command
From the DOS screen, change to the directory that the GRAB program files
are located. When you are in that directory, type:
"GRAB" and press RETURN.
When GRAB is loaded from a DOS command, it will remain "resident" in your
computer's memory as long as the computer is running. When you switch your
computer off, or re-boot it while it is running, GRAB will not be loaded in
memory any longer. You will have to load GRAB again from DOS when you
start your computer again.
3-6
Loading GRAB From AUTOEXEC.BAT
You can add the command "GRAB" as an additional line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. It will automate the loading of GRAB so that it will be loaded into
memory every time you start (or re-boot) your computer.
The advantage of using this method is that anytime your computer is
running, GRAB will always be ready for you at the touch of the hot-key so
you can print an envelope -- whether you're using a word processor, a
database program, a spreadsheet, or even GRABDB.
If you do not have an existing AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you can consult your
computer's DOS Operating System Manual for directions to create one.
Load GRAB From BATCH Files
You can use a customized batch file to temporarily load GRAB into memory
when you load your word processor (or any other text-based program), and
then automatically remove it from memory when you exit your word processor.
CAUTION:
This method will not work if you have
previously loaded Borland's SideKick.
The advantage of this method is that GRAB is resident in memory only during
your word processing session. When you exit your word processor, GRAB is
unloaded from memory to make it available to other programs.
The disadvantage of this method is that GRAB is not available for every
program you use, unless you were to make a batch file for each one.
3-7
Here is an example of a typical batch file to load GRAB automatically when
you load a word processor such as WordPerfect:
CD\GRABPLUS <---This changes to the GRABPLUS directory
GRAB <---This loads GRAB into memory
CD\WP51 <---This changes to the WordPerfect directory
WP <---This starts WordPerfect
CD\GRABPLUS <---This changes to the GRABPLUS directory again
GRAB /R <---This unloads GRAB from memory upon exit
In this example we moved to the GRAB Plus directory (line #1) and loaded
GRAB in memory (line #2). Then we moved to the WordPerfect directory (line
#3) and started WordPerfect (line #4). When we're done and exit
WordPerfect, we move back to the GRAB Plus directory (line #5) and unloaded
GRAB.
GRAB With SideKick
GRAB coexists with many other memory resident (TSR) programs. However,
Borland's SideKick demands that it be loaded after everything else. For
this reason, GRAB won't load if SideKick is already loaded unless you use
the "/S" option when you invoke GRAB. At the DOS prompt, you would type:
"GRAB /S" and press RETURN.
This option comes at a price, though.
* With SideKick, you cannot remove GRAB from memory unless you shut
off the computer or reboot it.
* However, SideKick Plus users can unload GRAB if loaded after SideKick
Plus.
Refer to the paragraph later in this section: "Remove GRAB From Memory",
for more information about GRAB and other TSR programs. Calling GRAB From
3-8
Calling GRAB From Memory
Press GRAB's hot-key when you have an address on your screen. The
familiar GRAB help window will pop up along with a shadow box marker.
GRAB cannot pop up if your screen is running in "Graphics
mode." It will respond with a beep if you attempt to call it. It
works only if your screen is in one of the many text modes (even
the EGA/VGA 8x8 text modes).
GRAB automatically displays a help window showing the current configuration
of GRAB and keys to press for operating GRAB. You can toggle this help
window on & off with the F1 key.
The GRAB Screen
The GRAB screen consists of a shadow box marker and a help window. They
give you the ability to mark the address you want to print and to see (and
change) the way the envelope is printed.
Here is an example of GRAB's display showing a typical configuration. We
have shown the shadow box marker already placed over the address so you can
see how it is used.

characters, you can turn off this filter using GRABCFG. Select
from the "Printer" menu, "Do not filter", then enter "No".
* If you use a standard printer, position your envelope so
the print head is on the first line where a return
address would print, even if you don't print a return
address.
* For most other printers, you just insert an envelope in
the envelope feed guides or tray position.
If your printer is switched OFF, or not On-line, or your printer
is not set for special tray use, printing will not start. GRAB
will display a reminder message so you can remedy the condition
and re-display the GRAB screen and try again.
3-13
<Alt>E - Edit the address
You may edit an address before printing by pressing the command-
key after the address is covered with the marking block.
An "Edit Address Window" appears containing the covered address
for you to type any changes for envelope printing. After editing
the address, press the Page Down key to print the envelope.
The changes you type are only applied for the envelope printing.
They do not change the covered address in the document.
<Alt>C - Enter the address
You may also manually type the address in to GRAB, if you
desire, by pressing the command-key for "Enter the address" while
GRAB is on screen. A "Manual Address Entry Window" will
open and request the address.
This is useful if you need to send a "carbon copy" of your letter
to someone else. After typing in the address, press the Page
Down key to print the envelope. This can also be used from DOS
or any other program you might be in.
<Alt>L - Edit last address
You may edit the last address you printed by pressing the
command-key for "Edit Last Address" while GRAB is on screen.
An "Edit Last Address Window" appears containing the last
address you printed. You can type any changes to it for envelope
printing. After editing the address, press the Page Down key to
print the envelope.

GRABCFG to permanently store your own comment lines.
In order to enter a comment line now, press the command-key for
"Comment = Empty" while GRAB is on screen. An "Optional
Comment Entry" window appears for you to enter your comment.
After you have entered the line and press the RETURN key the
toggle will display "Comment = Loaded".
If you want to remove the comment line, press the command-key
again and then press Esc to empty the comment line buffer. The
display will read "Comment = Empty".

Removing GRAB From Memory
To remove GRAB from memory, type from the DOS prompt (or a batch file):
"GRAB /R" and press RETURN.
GRAB will remove itself from memory.
If GRAB Refuses To Unload From Memory
CAUTION
If you had loaded another TSR program (such as
SideKick) after you had loaded GRAB, you cannot
unload GRAB from memory. You will have to
unload any other TSR programs in the order of "last-
in-first-out". Then you can unload GRAB.
Remove TSR's That Were Loaded After GRAB
IF you know which TSR programs were loaded after GRAB was loaded,
then you can remove them one at a time so you can unload GRAB. Refer
to those TSR program's manuals for information about the procedure to
remove them from memory.
When they are removed from memory, you can successfully unload GRAB
from memory.
How To Tell What TSR's Are Loaded After GRAB
If you do not know what TSR program was loaded into memory after GRAB,
you can use the "MAPMEM" program included on the GRAB Plus distribution
disk. It will display a listing of programs that are residing in your
computer's memory.
You can start this program by typing from the DOS prompt:
"MAPMEM" and press RETURN.
An example display is shown below:
3-18
Allocated Memory Map - by TurboPower Software
PSP blks bytes owner command line hooked vectors
----- ---- ----- -------- ------------------- -------------------
0008 1 3344 config
0C78 2 5904 command 22 24 2E
0E16 2 11936 pc-cache 15 19 F1 F3 FF
1102 2 6288 GRAB 05
128C 2 65344 SK 28 EC EF
2283 2 512976 free
Notice in this example that there is one listing after GRAB, and it is
identified "SK". In this example, "SK" is SideKick. Now you know that
if you were to unload SideKick from your computer's memory, you will be
able to unload GRAB.
Unload TSR's Loaded From Your AUTOEXEC.BAT File
If you are automatically loading GRAB and other TSR programs from your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you may have a problem being able to unload the
other TSR's. Here is how you can do it:
Step 1.Temporarily Rename Your AUTOEXEC.BAT File.
With the DOS prompt on your root directory, such as "C:>",
rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to be "AUTOEXEC.TMP" by
typing this command and then press RETURN.
"ren autoexec.bat autoexec.tmp"
Now, your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is disabled because it is now
named AUTOEXEC.TMP.
Step 2.Re-boot Your Computer
To re-boot your computer, press all together and then release:
"Ctrl-Alt-Delete"
Your computer will start up and display the prompt: C:\>. When
your computer is re-booted without the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
being effective, all TSR programs that were resident in memory
are cleared out. In this example, both SideKick and GRAB no
longer reside in memory. Now you can use GRAB's configuration
program "GRABCFG".
3-19
Step 3.Run GRABCFG
Change to the directory containing GRABCFG. To run
GRABCFG, type:
"GRABCFG" and press RETURN.
Step 4.Rename AUTOEXEC Back To BAT
To change the name of your AUTOEXEC.TMP file back to the
name AUTOEXEC.BAT, type and then press RETURN:
"ren autoexec.tmp autoexec.bat"
Now your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is ready for use again the next
time you boot-up your computer.
Step 5.Re-boot Your Computer
To re-boot your computer using the altered AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
press all together and then release:
Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Your GRAB program will now operate according to the changes
you made with the GRABCFG program.
3-20
Using GRAB Without Going Resident
You can load GRAB from the command line without going resident if you find
the need. This is useful if other applications need a lot of memory and
you don't want to load any memory resident programs. The command to load
GRAB without going resident is:
"GRAB /C" and press RETURN.
This feature goes hand in hand with the database program GRABDB as GRABDB
normally checks to see if GRAB is loaded and will "pop" it up for use. If
GRAB is not loaded, GRABDB will call it from DOS so you may still print
your envelope if you don't have GRAB in memory. In order to take advantage
of this feature both GRAB and GRABDB must reside in the same directory.
3-21
Edit Commands
Edit commands available for use in the data entry areas are as follows:
RETURN - Accept line.
Esc, Ctrl-Break - Quit without changing line.
Left Arrow, Ctrl-S - Cursor left one character.
Right Arrow, Ctrl-D - Cursor right character.
Ctrl-Left Arrow, Ctrl-A - Cursor left one word.

Main Hot-key
The main hot-key "pops" GRAB The Envelope Addressor onto your screen while
you use your favorite word processor. It is set to Alt-Z by default, but
you can change it to any other command. You can even use multiple-key
combinations such as Ctrl-Right Shift-F10 to help avoid conflicts with your
word processor or with another TSR.
Paste Hot-key
This command-key pastes the last address from GRAB into your DOS word
processor at the location of the cursor. It is set to Alt-F10 by default,
but you can change it to any other command as explained for the main
hot-key above.
Popgdb Hot-key
This command-key pops up the GRABDB data base program while you are in your
DOS word processor, without the need for exiting your word processor. It is
set to Alt-Left Shift-F10 by default, but you can change it to any other
command as explained for the main hot-key above.
Print Marker Key

"shadow box marker". It is set to Alt-X by default for the GRAB help screen
selection "Print the address".
Edit Before Printing Key
This command-key lets you edit the address you have covered with the
"shadow box marker" before printing it. It is set to Alt-E by default for
the GRAB help screen selection "Edit the address". A window will display
the covered address for you to edit it.
Print Window Key
This command-key lets you type a name and address manually to be printed on
an envelope. It is set to Alt-C by default for the GRAB help screen
selection "Enter the address".
Edit Last Address Key
This command-key displays the last address you printed so you can edit it
or print it again. It is set to Alt-L by default for the GRAB help screen
selection "Edit last address". A window will display the last address for
you to edit it.
3-28
Toggle Print Return Key
This command-key toggles the printing of the return address to be enabled
or disabled. It is set to Alt-R by default for the GRAB help screen. It
will toggle the screen display back and forth between "Print primary
return"(or "Print alternate return") and "Do not print return".
Style Sheet Key
This command key allows you to display a style sheet look-up window. You
can choose a style sheet for each printer you are using. It is set to
Alt-S by default for the GRAB help screen selection "Toggle style".
Toggle Alternate Address Key
This command-key toggles between two different return addresses you have
entered during configuration. It is set to Alt-A by default for the GRAB
help screen selection "Toggle primary/alt.". It will toggle the screen
display back and forth between "Print primary return" and "Print alternate
return". (Refer to the "Address & Swap" menu selections for the procedure
to enter an alternate return address.)
Enter Comment Line Key
This command-key lets you type an optional comment line which prints just
below the "TO ADDRESS". (You must raise the location of the "TO ADDRESS"
if you print a comment line on small envelopes.) It is set to Alt-I by
default for the GRAB help screen selection "Comment = ". If you have
previously entered comments, it will display a pick list of your comments
for selection. The screen selection will display "Comment = Empty." if you
have not previously entered any comments. It will display "Comment =
Loaded." when you have entered a comment.
Edit Return Address Key
This command-key lets you edit the two different return addresses. It is
set to Alt-Y by default for the GRAB help screen selection "Edit return
addr." The two return addresses will be displayed in a window for you to
edit. (Refer to the "Address & Swap" menu selections for the procedure to
enter an alternate return address.)

"Printer" Menu Selections
-------------------------
The first time you use GRAB, you must select a style that is configured for
the type of printer you are using. Remember, the style sheets come built-
in with printer operation codes. These options are available for you if
you want to custom build your own style sheets.

Type of Printer
A window will appear, listing different types of printers. The letter
"Y" is next to the type of printer corresponding with the style sheet you
have selected. This printer option is available if you want to custom
build your own style sheets.
Check Printer
This selection tells GRAB whether to insure that your printer is on-line
before it prints an envelope. Some computers "lock up" when GRAB performs
this check (usually due to a conflict with other software). If your
computer does so, you should tell GRAB to not check the printer first by
entering "N" for no.
If you turn this option off and your printer is not connected or not turned
on when you go to print an envelope, DOS will present you with its
standard "Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail" message. This is why you should let
GRAB check the printer for you if at all possible, by entering "Y" for yes.
Init/Exit Printer 1
For dot-matrix printers, GRAB can send an initialization string to the
printer as well as an exit string. This is useful if you need to send a
special code to your printer to temporarily turn on the "letter quality"
printing mode, for example. Refer to your dot-matrix printer manual for
the decimal codes to enter for this selection.
3-30
Here's an example for setting an Epson FX286 printer to letter quality mode
and then returning to regular draft mode:
1. Enter "27" in the first block of the init string. This is the decimal
code for the escape character.
2. Enter "71" in the second block of the init string. This is the decimal
code for a capital G.
3. Enter "27" in the first block of the exit string.
4. Enter "72" in the second block of the exit string. This is the decimal
code for a capital H.
You may enter up to 32 decimal codes for both the Init string and the Exit
string.
You can tell GRAB to send the Init string at the start of each line
instead of just once at the beginning.
The Init/Exit strings should not be used for laser printers. Laser printer
codes are handled by the style sheet selection (see above) and the
following two menu choices (see below).
Init/Exit Printer 2
This selection allows you to enter many codes in ASCII format if you want
to alter the operation of your laser printer. When you select this option,
an additional window displays specific printer operation functions that you
can select and enter codes.
You may need to refer to your printer's manual for explanations of the
various codes you can enter.
Options For Non-PostScript Laser Printers
Refer to your printer's manual for explanations of the codes and their
applications.
Envelope Feed Selection
Select this option if you want to enter a code to select the
"manual" or "envelope" feed mode of your laser printer.
3-31
Orientation
Select this option if you want to enter a code to select the
"landscape" printing mode of your laser printer.
Eject Page
Select this option if you want to enter a code to send a "form feed"
to your laser printer.
Portrait
Select this option if you want to enter a code to return your laser
printer to "portrait" mode, if you had previously enter a code to
select "landscape" printing under the "Orientation" option.
Return To Tray
Select this option if you want to enter a code to return your laser
printer to the "normal" paper tray mode, if you had previously
entered code to select an optional tray under the "Envelope Feed
Selection" option.
Reset Printer
Select this option if you want to enter a code to reset your laser
printer to its normal start-up defaults.
3-32
Options For PostScript Laser Printers
Refer to your Adobe PostScript manual for explanations of the codes and
their applications.
Line 1 of 6 Lines
through
Line 6 of 6 Lines
You can change or add codes to control your PostScript laser
printer's operation. The codes that are already specified place the
laser printer in manual mode for printing envelopes from the
envelope feed of the standard paper tray.
Font Selections
This selection lets you enter initialization strings so you can use soft
fonts on your LaserJet printer, PostScript printer, or any printer that
supports multiple fonts. You have the option of specifying one font for
the first line of an address and a different one for the remainder of the
address.
Refer to your printer's manual for explanations of the codes and their
applications.
Font specifications for non-PostScript printers are entered with the
"Escape" character followed with alpha-numeric codes.
Font specifications for PostScript laser printers are entered by specifying
the name of the font. PostScript names are case-sensitive, so you must
enter them exactly as your PostScript manual shows them.
Return Address First
The font string entry on this selection determines the soft font that
will be printed only for the first line of the return address.
Return Address Rest
Your font string entry for this selection determines the soft font that
will be printed only for the remainder of the return address following
the first line. This soft font can be different than the font of the
first line or it can be the same as the first line.
3-33
Addressee First
The font string entry on this selection determines the soft font that
will be printed only for the first line of the addressee.
Addressee Rest
Your font string entry for this selection determines the soft font that
will be printed only for the remainder of the lines following the first
line of the addressee. This soft font can be different than the font of
the first line or it can be the same as the first line.
Comment Line
The font string entry on this selection determines the soft font that
will be printed only for the comment line. Refer to "Appendix D" for
more information about using soft fonts with GRAB Plus.
To enter the escape code needed by the LaserJet printers, press the
Ctrl key, while holding it down press the "P" key, then press the "Esc"
key. You will then see the "[" character which is the display GRABCFG
uses the "escape" symbol.
The README file on the disk has additional information on soft fonts, and
it explains the companion programs from ECI-Software (see below).
You must have a method for downloading soft fonts to your
printer. One such method is a program from ECI-Software called
DOWNLOAD. A simple version of the program is included with
GRAB. Call ECI at (708) 377-3520 for a free brochure on other
products they offer.
3-34
Printer Port
You enter the designation of the port to which your printer is connected.
Enter for the correct port designation for your printer.
You may select different printer ports and save different style sheets for
different printers that you may be using with your computer. This will
allow you to print an envelope on one printer (such as a laser printer)
attached to one port (such as LPT1), and then switch to another printer
(such as a dot matrix) attached to another port (such as LPT2) and print a
shipping label.
Wait to Send Exit
This is a special option for LaserJet users with unusual hardware
configurations.
The default selection is "N" (for No).
Enter "Y" (for Yes) for this selection if your printer will not return to
its normal mode after printing an envelope. (The manual feed light usually
stays on, feeding no longer occurs from the normal paper tray, and the
printer's portrait mode won't work.) This happens when the printer is too
slow for the data coming from GRAB.
You should also enter "Y" for this selection if your computer locks up or
aborts the word processor program after you print an envelope.
If you enter "Y" for this selection, you must press any key after the
envelope has finished printing. Only then will GRAB send the exit string
to your printer.
Do Not Filter
GRAB normally "filters out" any non-ASCII characters in the address window,
but this option allows you to override it. Overseas users sometimes use
special characters which normally cause unpredictable results in a standard
American-use printer.
The default entry is "Y" (for Yes). Enter "N" (for No) if you do not
want GRAB to filter non-ASCII characters.
3-35
Epson Landscape/Portrait
This option allows you to select "landscape" or "Portrait" printing on your
Epson printer.
The default selection is "N" for No.
* Press the RETURN key (or the "N" key) if you do not want to print in
"landscape" mode.
* Enter "Y" (for Yes) if you want to print in "landscape" mode.
Epson Landscape Size
With this selection you can set the default to print the small size
envelopes on your Epson printer. This default, like the "Return address"
default, may also be toggled from regular to small.
* Enter "N" (for No) to print on large envelopes.
* Enter "Y" (for Yes) to print on small envelopes.
Use Postal Barcode
This selection allows you to disable the printing of postal barcodes. The
default condition, for printers that support graphic barcode printing, is
"Y" (for Yes). If you have the "ZIP+4" or "ZIP+6" ZIP codes in your
address, GRAB will automatically detect it and print the postal barcode on
your envelopes.
If your addresses do not contain the "ZIP+4" or "ZIP+6" ZIP
codes, the postal barcode will not be printed.
When this manual was published, the only printers that support printing
graphic postal barcodes are:
* Hewlett Packard LaserJet (and compatible) laser printers.
* PostScript laser printers.
! * Epson dot matrix (and compatible) printers.
! Postal barcodes are not available in Epson landscape modes.
Enter "N" (for No) if you do not want to print postal barcodes. Make this
selection when you are printing foreign addresses.
3-36
Here is a diagram that shows the lower right corner of an envelope having
the required position of the barcode. The diagram and barcode are not
drawn to scale. The barcodes must be printed within the maximum and
minimum positions.

We have the postal barcodes turned off in the style sheets
"PLAIN-S.STL" and "PLAIN-L.STL". We did it because the
barcodes would be printed unintelligibly if you use a printer
that is not Epson compatible.
GRABDB will print the postnet barcodes if you have the "ZIP+4" or "ZIP+6"
codes in the GRABDB database. This option is only available to be printed
on the Large Avery 5162/5262 labels for laser printers. Check with your
post office about postage discounts when you use the postnet barcodes.
Use New Barcode Graphics
Select this option if you want to use the new graphics functions of Epson
and compatible printers. This will give a darker postnet barcode than the
default of quad density graphics. This will only work on newer printers
that support the new graphics capabilities.
Force Upper Case
Select this option if you want GRAB to print addresses in upper case
characters, regardless if the data entries are in upper and lower case
combined.
This selection will force upper case letters in the address, remove the
comma and add two spaces between the city state and zip. This is the
desired format of the US Post Office.

"Address & tsr" Menu Selections
-------------------------------
This selection allows you to enter two different default return addresses
and lets you change the way GRAB acts as a TSR.
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Hot key Printer Address & tsr Style sheets Locations Color Files ║
╚════════════════╦══════════════════════════╦════════════════════════════╝
║ print Return address? ║
║ Primary return address ║
║ Alternate return address ║
║ Swap memory or full TSR? ║
║ Force to disk swap? ║
║ Location of grabdb.exe ║
╚══════════════════════════╝
By default, GRAB tries to store the major portion of itself in EMS expanded
memory or XMS extended memory, leaving just a 8k "kernel" in regular
memory. (The EMS expanded memory must conform to the LIM EMS
specification, version 3.2 or better, and XMS extended memory must be
managed by HIMEM.SYS.) If it can't find enough EMS or XMS memory, it will
store the major portion of itself on disk.
You can change the way GRAB swaps if you wish. You can either force it to
swap to disk (useful if you don't want it to tie up EMS or XMS memory), or
you can order it not to swap at all (useful for floppy disk users).
GRAB takes quite a bit more than 8k of memory if you refuse to
let it swap to EMS or XMS memory or to disk.
Print Return Address
This selection tells GRAB whether you want to print a return address as the
default. Many people use envelopes pre-printed with a return address and
thus wouldn't want to print on them by default. This is just the default,
you can toggle it on & off while you use GRAB.
Enter "Y" to print a return address, or "N" to omit printing it.
Primary Return Address
Enter the return address you will most commonly print on your envelopes.
This could be your business address, for example.
3-38
Alternate Return Address
Enter an alternate return address that you may need to print on an envelope
from time to time. This could be your home address, for example. You can
choose to print either the primary or the alternate address each time you
print an envelope.
Swap Memory or Full TSR
This selection allows you to choose whether you want GRAB to load "Swap
Mode" using only 8k of regular memory (the default setting) or to load as a
full TSR using a considerably larger amount of memory.
* Enter "Y" to select the Swap Mode using only 8k of regular memory.
* Enter "N" to select full TSR Mode using a much larger amount of regular
memory.
When GRAB is set to the 8k Swap Mode, it will automatically detect if you
have LIM EMS (or XMS from HIMEM.SYS) memory available, and it will store
the major portion of itself there. This leaves you with more regular
memory available for running your other programs.
If EMS or XMS memory is not available, GRAB stores the major portion of
itself on disk. This involves writing two files on the default drive in
the root directory: GRAB1.$$$ and GRAB2.$$$. These are "hidden" files so
they are not normally visible. DO NOT delete them when using any of the
powerful directory programs available. You will probably lock up your
system.
RAM drive users:
If you own an AT-class machine (80286 or 80386 processor) and you have
enough memory, you can greatly increase GRAB's speed by swapping to a RAM
drive instead of a regular hard disk or floppy. Consult your DOS manual
for information on how to establish a RAM drive on your system. Once this
is done, make the RAM drive the default before you invoke GRAB. The
program's 8k portion will load in regular memory and the rest will be
stored on the RAM drive.
Floppy disk systems:
Avoid swapping to disk if your computer has no EMS or hard drive. GRAB's
swapping technique needs twice the disk space compared to the size of the
GRAB program itself. Floppy disk operation is notoriously slow when
compared to hard disks.
3-39
Force to Disk Swap
This selection allows you to
choose if you want GRAB to swap to disk even if enough LIM EMS memory is
available for swapping purposes. This is useful for people who need the
EMS memory for other purposes.
Enter "Y" to select only the Disk Swapping Mode.
Enter "N" to disable the exclusive Disk Swapping Mode. This allows the
selection for Full TSR Mode above.
Location Of Grabdb.exe
This selection displays the default path location of the GRABDB.EXE program
so that the POPGDB pop-up database can find it. If you have the GRABDB.EXE
program file in another directory, enter it here.

"Style Sheets" Menu Selections
------------------------------
The style sheets selection is a powerful feature which will allow you to
change your complete configuration (except the main hot key) at the touch
of a key while in GRAB.

Read
This selection will display a pick list of available style sheets you may
use to replace your current style configuration.
CAUTION
If a style sheet is read in, all your
existing options will be replaced by
the defaults in that style sheet selection.
You will be given the opportunity to abandon this option before you read
another style.
- Enter "N" (for No) if you do not want to replace the default options in
the current style. You will be returned to the Main Menu selections.
- Press the RETURN key (or the "Y" key) if you want to proceed and read
another style sheet.
The only option that is NOT saved in any style sheet is the "Main" hot-key
and the "PopGDB" hot-key information. These and any default configuration
that you want MUST be saved upon exit. Refer to "Exit" described later in
this section.
3-41
Write
This selection will write the configuration to the same style sheet, or you
may rename the style sheet and save it as a new style sheet. You may only
use normal DOS file names at the file name prompt. You will also be asked
for a description that will be displayed when GRAB is popped up on your
screen.
CAUTION
You cannot change only the name of a style sheet
to make it applicable for a different printer. You
must select an existing style sheet containing the
name of the type of printer you want to use.
Once you have selected the style sheets that conform to your printer, you
may wish to delete the remaining unwanted style sheets that came with GRAB
Plus. You must be on the DOS command line, in the directory where your GRAB
Plus files are located (such as C:\GRABPLUS). Use the DOS "del" command to
delete each unwanted style sheet file name. For example, if you wanted to
delete the "DJ-LG.STL" style sheet, you would enter:
"DEL DJ-LG.STL" and press RETURN.
Refer to your DOS manual for more information about using the delete
command.
Comment
This selection will allow you to create and save comment lines to use when
printing your envelopes. This gives you greater flexibility with entering
comment lines than in the past.
3-42
"Locations" Menu Selections
---------------------------
This option allows you to change the default print locations on your

We recommend that you print a test address on a piece of paper and make
your adjustments before you try printing on an envelope.
Non-PostScript to PostScript
Some of the technology used by GRAB was
developed by Terry McGuire (an expert programmer in California). Terry
offers a program for translating non-PostScript output to PostScript so
you can print it on your PostScript printer. Write to him at the

│ Add Find Quit Help Tags Import Export │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
If you have been using another database system, you probably have a list
of names & addresses you might want to use in GRABDB. Most database
systems can export data in a format is known as "comma delimited." Here
are two sample records:
"Paul","Mayer","2526 69th Avenue South","St. Petersburg","FL","33712"
"John","Doe","123 N. State Street","Chicago","IL","60601"
4-8
IMPORTANT
Please be sure your exported data is written with the
"," (double quote comma double quote) between
pieces of data. GRABDB expects this when it
imports data. Also, we advise you to back up your
GRABDB.DAT (data file) and GRABDB.IXN (index
file) before you start importing data.
The above file contains six of the eleven available fields GRABDB can
import. You can't have additional fields in a file GRABDB is to read as
this would cause an overlap of data when reading in. If your database
system must write out the additional (unused by GRABDB) items, make sure
they are the last items in your export file. This way you will read in,
say, the first five items and ignore the trailing three.
In order to read the file you must tell GRABDB the order to read in the
different fields. As we can see, the order of our above file is: 1 - the
first name, 2 - the last name, 3 - the street address, 4 - the city, 5 -
the state and 6 - the zip code. Keep this in mind when you are shown the
screen for import data selection. It should be marked as shown below:
Title: 0
Last Name: 2 <---
First Name: 1 <---
Company: 0
Street Address 1: 3 <---

Ext: 0

4-9
As you will notice, fields not being read-in are left as zeros. Also,
you will find GRABDB will not let you enter the same number in two
different fields. The F10 key accepts the selections for importing. The
Esc key aborts the selection. After selections are made, you will be
asked for the name of the file you will be importing.
Finding Existing Records
│└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘│
│ Add Find Quit Help Tags Import Export │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The records you enter into GRABDB are indexed for easy retrieval when
needed. When you retrieve records, you can immediately print them on
envelopes or labels or you can edit them for use now or later.
The records are indexed by default using the last name and the first name
of the individual entered. If there is no individual person in a record
and only a company name is entered, then the index will be taken from the
company name. This means when you need to locate a record you are shown a
screen asking for the last name and first name.
You don't need to enter the full name to find the record. This means if
there is a "Paul Mayer" entered, you could type in just part of the name,
"may" for example, and the program will retrieve the record. If there were

GRABDB and ZIPKEY
If you have ZIPKEY, a TSR ZIP Code look-up program from Eric Isaacson
Software, then GRABDB will look up the City and State for you by using
ZIPKEY. All you have to do is make sure ZIPKEY is loaded then enter the
zip code into the proper location in the data entry screen and tap the
F2 key. GRABDB will then type in the City and State for you.
ZIPKEY is available from:

Tagging Records
You can tag records for "Batch Printing". You have the availability of
five different "tags" for each record. With these tags you can "browse"
through the records matching a selected tag.
The default "tag" is an asterisk (*), meaning all available records will
be selected for display. Note: if you specify a tag not used in any
record, GRABDB will reset itself to the default tag and return to the
menu. Refer to the "Menus" section for more information about tags.
4-11
Printing Records On Envelopes
You should have GRAB loaded in memory before entering GRABDB. The function
keys for formatting the record are active whenever you see the menu with
the "Next" and "Previous" selections.
When you have the record displayed that you want to print, press the
function key for the printing format you want to use (F7,F8 or F9 keys).
The address will display, ready for use with GRAB the envelope addressor,
in a position where GRAB normally pops up. Then press GRAB's "Print the
address" command-key to print the address.
GRAB will be loaded "nonresident" by GRABDB if it is not previously loaded.

Printing Records On Labels
In order to print labels on your laser printer, you need to take a few
steps in preparation before the actual printing may take place. You need
to make some decisions, depending on which labels you use. * Do you want to
use the printer's default fonts? * Do you want to use soft fonts or
possibly fonts from a font cartridge? * Do you want the first line of the
address to have a font different from the other lines in the address?
* Do you want to print your labels according to your GRABDB "tags"?
Refer to the "Menus" section of this manual for more information about each
selection of this GRABDB Menu.
* If you have already selected the type of labels you are going to use, and
the type of fonts to use, you can go directly to the "Print labels"
selection.
Printing Labels
GRABDB lets you use different label formats from Avery as well as using
soft fonts for added impact to your mailings. The program recognizes the
tag fields of GRABDB and will select by tags if you like. The GRABDB
system comes with a sample set of soft fonts to show you how your labels
can have a creative appearance for greater impact.
* Select "Set up" from the menu bar.

4-15
Starting GRABDB With Options
You can load GRABDB with various options by attaching "switches" onto the
command "GRABDB". You can combine these option switches together if you
want multiple options.
The /M Start Up Option
You can force monochrome colors if desired by using the /M or /m command
line option. This is useful when you have a color adapter board and are
not using a color monitor. If you have a monochrome board, you don't
have to do this since GRABDB will detect your display adapter upon
loading.
The following command would load GRABDB in the monochrome mode:
"GRABDB /M" and press RETURN.
The /S Start Up Option
You can turn off the sound if you like a totally quiet program by using
the /S or /s command line option as shown below:
"GRABDB /S" and press RETURN.
The /U Start Up Option
The /U command line option forces GRABDB to use upper-case letters in the
address. Use this option to compensate for new post office OCR (Optical
Character Recognition) equipment. It also strips punctuation from the
City/State/ZIP line and puts two spaces (not one) between the City and
State abbreviation and the ZIP Code. This is for people who do bulk
mailing and wish to save the extra postage by letting the post office use
their OCR equipment. The City, State and ZIP must be on the last line of
the address in order to comply with the post office. This means you
cannot use a comment line. To load GRABDB with the /U command line
option, enter:
"GRABDB /U" and press RETURN.
4-16
Combining Start Up Options
You can combine start up options if you wish. For example, if you want
to start GRABDB in monochrome mode and silent mode, you can put both
option switches on the command line:
"GRABDB /M/S" and press RETURN.
Fixing Damaged Data Files
GRABDB includes a utility program for repairing damaged GRABDB data files.
* You can run it if your GRABDB data files have become damaged or
corrupted.
* You can run it periodically to clean up deleted records in your GRABDB
data files.
To run it, from the DOS prompt type:
"FIXGDB" and press RETURN.
It will fix the default file name of GRABDB. If your database file name is
different, then add a space and the file name as a suffix to the FIXGDB
command. For example, if your file name is "VENDORS", you would enter:
"FIXGDB VENDORS" and press RETURN.
Be sure to add the space before the suffix.
4-17
Starting POPGDB With Options
You can load POPGDB with various options by attaching "switches" onto the
command "POPGDB". You can combine these option switches together if you
want multiple options.
The /1 Start Up Option
This option allows only a single swap file.
The /A Start Up Option
This option provides a visible attribute for swap files.
The /D Start Up Option
This option forces disk swaping instead of using memory.
The /F kbytes Start Up Option
This option specifies how many kilobytes of free memory is to be
available within the DOS shell. If an amount is not specified, it
defaults to all the free memory available.
The /H hexkey Start Up Option
This option specifies the TRS hot-key in hexadecimal code.
The /K Start Up Option
This option kills the mouse management code.
The /M Start Up Option
This option squelches swapping messages from being displayed.
The /S path Start Up Option
This option specifies the drive and directory for swap files if you do
not have them in the default path.
The /U Start Up Option
This option unloads POPGDB from memory.
The /X Start Up Option
This option cause POPGDB to use XMS extended memory for swapping.
The /? Start Up Option
This option displays these start up options.

possibility of five different "tags" for each record. With these tags
you can "browse" through the records matching a selected tag.
For example, let's say you make payments on the 15th of the month and on
the end of the month. You could tag those records containing addresses
for payments you make on the 15th with an "A" , and use a "B" tag for
those you pay at the end of the month. You can also tag the ones you
pay on both the 15th and at the end of the month with both an "A" and a
"B".
When you see the menu with the "Tag" selection, you can set it by
entering the correct letter. If it is the 15th of the month, only the
records with an "A" in any one of the five tag fields will be displayed.
You can then browse records with the "Next" and "Previous" selections to
display those records for use.
The default "tag" is an asterisk (*), meaning all available records will
be selected for display. Note: if you specify a tag not used in any
record, GRABDB will reset itself to the default tag and return to the

This selection allows you to import data from an ASCII file that has been
prepared from another data base.
If you have been using another database system, you probably have a list of
names & addresses you might want to use in GRABDB. Most database systems
can export data in a format is known as "comma delimited." Here are two
sample records:
"Paul","Mayer","2526 69th Avenue South","St. Petersburg","FL","33712"
"John","Doe","123 N. State Street","Chicago","IL","60601"
IMPORTANT
Please be sure your exported data is written with the
"," (double quote comma double quote) between
pieces of data. GRABDB expects this when it
imports data. Also, we advise you to back up your
GRABDB.DAT (data file) and GRABDB.IXN (index
file) before you start importing data.
The above file contains six of the eleven available fields GRABDB
can import. You can't have additional fields in a file GRABDB is
to read as this would cause an overlap of data when reading in.
If your database system must write out the additional (unused by
GRABDB) items, make sure they are the last items in your export
file. This way you will read in, say, the first five items and
ignore the trailing three.

As you will notice, fields not being read-in are left as zeros. Also, you
will find GRABDB will not let you enter the same number in two different
fields. The key accepts the selections for importing. The key aborts
the selection. After selections are made, you will be asked for the name of
the file you will be importing.

You may export data to an ASCII file so you can use it with other programs
(like the MailMerge feature of WordStar). The file will be written in the
comma-quote style shown above. The data file written to your disk is named
"GRABDB.ASC" and contains everything in the record (except the TAG fields).
The TAG field selects the records you want to write, thus letting you
control which records are exported.

Avery 5160/5260 Labels
Make this selection to use Avery 5160/5260 laser labels which have thirty 1
inch x 2-5/8 inch labels on a sheet. If you want to use the printer
default font, you must select the line printer fonts listed below. This
label looks very attractive on small letter size envelopes, when using a 10
point bold font for the first line and a 10 point regular font for the
other lines of the address.
Avery 5161/5261 Labels
Make this selection to use Avery 5161/5261 laser printer labels which have
twenty 1 inch x 4 inch labels on a sheet. These are a middle size
correspondence label and look best on large size envelopes. If you want to
use your printer's default font, you must select the courier font listed
below.
Avery 5162/5262 Labels
Make this selection to use Avery 5162/5262 laser printer labels which have
fourteen 1-1/3 inch x 4 inch labels on a sheet. These 5162/5262 large
labels are useful for printing postal bar codes and for packages. If you
want to use your printer's default font, you must select the courier font
listed below.

Non-Laser Printer
Make this selection if you want to print labels on a non-laser printer. It
will allow the GRABDB program to print labels on a dot-matrix or daisy
wheel type printer. The format is the standard "one up" labels with six
lines per label.
Use Two Fonts
Make this selection if you want the program to use the same font for all
lines of the label or print a different font for the first line.
Enter "Y" (for Yes) if you want to have a different font on the first
line. It will be the soft font with an ID number of 90, which is
described below.
Enter "N" (for No) if you want to have the same font on all the lines.

This selection lets you use a downloaded soft font with an ID number of 80
to be selected by GRABDB. The fonts must be downloaded prior to using
GRABDB in order to select them. Use the "DOWNLOAD.EXE" program to download
the fonts. Read the instructions for the download program for the proper
procedures.
Downloading Fonts
There is a batch file to download the two fonts which are included with
this program. The batch file is called DLFONTS.BAT and will download
the sample fonts for the "two fonts" use with the 5160/5260 labels. If
you have selected the option to print a different font on the first line
the# 80 font will be the second through the fifth lines of each label.
So keeping this in mind when you download your fonts, make the # 80 a
smaller size than the # 90 font, the # 90 being your "headline".
When you make this selection you will be given the option of changing
the font selection string. The default string will select the font with
an ID number of 80. This string appears as "[(80X". (The "[" is a
graphic representation for the escape code.) The next paragraph
explains how to enter special codes.
If you want to use a font cartridge you may change the string to select
your desired font. Do this by typing in the selection string from the
manual supplied with your font cartridge. The Esc and control
characters may be entered by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing the
"P" key. Then the next key will be entered as is, such as the escape
key or a control key.
4-31
Soft Font ID #90
This is the font you use for the first line (only) of each label when you
select the use of two fonts. (See "Use Two Fonts" above.)
This soft font id #90 selection information is the same as the ID #80
(above).
Default Line Printer Font
Make this selection when you want to use your printer's default font for
printing on the Avery 5160/5260 labels.
Default Courier Font
Make this selection when you want to use your printer's default font for
printing on the Avery 5161/5261 & 5162/5262 labels.
Printer Port
Enter "Y" next to the printer port designation that your printer is
connected.
Postal Barcode
GRABDB will print the postnet bar codes if you have the "ZIP+4" ZIP codes
in the GRABDB database. This option is only available to be printed on the
Large Avery 5162/5262 labels for laser printers. Check with your post
office about discounts on postage when you use the postnet bar code
feature.
Enter "Y" (for Yes) if you want to print postal bar codes.
New Barcode Graphics
Select this option if you want to use the new graphics functions of Epson
and compatible printers. This will give a darker postnet bar code than the
default of quad density graphics. This will only work on newer printers
that support the new graphics capabilities.
Save Current Set Up
Make this selection to save all your selections (or any changes) into the
"LL.EXE" program. You only have to run this setup section once to make
your new "defaults".

Make this selection if you do not want to print the labels now. It will
return you to the main GRABDB menu. You can change any of the options or
quit and exit GRABDB.
Print by Zip Code
Make this selection if you want to print your labels in order of ZIP code,
such as for bulk mailing purposes. When you select the Zip Code order,
GRABDB will create an index file from the contents of the GRABDB file.
This will be done each time this selection is made since the GRABDB.EXE
program does not index by ZIP code.
You will be asked for a starting and ending record to choose from. Enter
the starting and ending ZIP codes. This is useful if your printer should
run out of labels and you need to start where it left off. You may stop
the printing process by tapping the escape key while it is printing.
If you want to print all records just tap the enter key to leave these two
entries blank.
4-35
Print by Name
Make this selection if you want to print your labels in alphabetical order
of last name (or company name).
You will be asked for a starting and ending record to choose from.
IMPORTANT
Use this procedure for entering a starting or ending record for
a label run in name order:
Since GRABDB indexes the files by last name or company
name:
* Enter the company name if no individual name is in the
file.
* If a person's name is in the file enter the last name.
If you want to print labels in name order within a range of the alphabet,
such as J through L, then just enter "J" in the start and "L" in the ending
fields. This is useful if your printer should run out of labels and you
need to start where it left off. You may stop the printing process by
tapping the escape key while it is printing.
If you want to print all records just tap the enter key to leave these two
entries blank.

Questions & Answers
B-2
Answers to Common Questions
---------------------------
WinGRAB Doesn't Print On LaserJet
Question - I cannot get WinGRAB to print on my LaserJet printer. Why?
Answer - You did not configure WinGRAB to select the proper printer.
WinGRAB comes configured for a plain printer, so you must make the
necessary selection to tell it to use your printer.
Address Too Low On LaserJet Printer
Question - I am using the LaserJet II printer and the address seems to
print about 15 or so lines too low. What is wrong? Answer - It sounds as
though you may have selected the older LaserJet and not one of the later
LaserJet printers as your printer.
When you select one of the LaserJet printers, the codes to switch your
printer to the landscape mode are sent automatically upon exit as well as
the printer reset codes. Therefore, it is not necessary to put these codes
into the "init"/"exit" string options in the configuration option.
Soft Fonts With LaserJet Printer
Question - How does one go about using soft fonts on a LaserJet printer?
Answer - A brief instruction file is called FONTS.DOC and a self extracting
file which contains DOWNLOAD and two soft fonts is FONTS.EXE. DOWNLOAD.DOC
in the file explains how to use soft fonts with WinGRAB. These files are
from:
Elfring Soft Fonts
P.O. Box 61
Wasco, Illinois 60183-0061
(708) 377-3520
The utility program: DOWNLOAD is a Shareware program.
B-3
Address Double Spaced
Question - I am using a regular printer which is not a laser printer. The
return address prints normal, however the address prints with double
spacing. What is wrong?
Answer - You have a short carriage printer (only 80 columns wide). What is
happening is: the location of the address is causing a "wrap around"
effect. You could move the "TO ADDRESS" position to the left in the
configuration option. This method should prevent the problem from
reoccurring.
Comment Line After Printing
Question - Do I have to type in the comment line before printing each
address?
Answer - No, it will be there until you delete it by entering the comment
entry window and press the [Esc] delete command. The status of the comment
line is displayed in the GRAB help window.
Comment Line Doesn't Print
Question - I had a comment typed in and on my LaserJet Plus it did not
print on the envelope. What did happen was that the printer requested
another envelope. What happened?
Answer - The address was too long in depth and the comment line was off of
the page. In other words the comment line printed on the second page. To
correct this problem raise the location of the "TO ADDRESS" in the
configuration program a few lines.
GRAB Colors With WordPerfect
Question - I just received my new update to WordPerfect version 5.0 and am
using it with an EGA monitor and video card. GRAB used to work perfect on
the old version. Now when I call up GRAB while in WordPerfect the GRAB
help screen is so distorted it looks like a message from outer space! What
happened?
Answer - WordPerfect has changed the method of writing information to the
screen if you have an EGA monitor. They have a 512 character display
option for decoding any characters with the "bright" attribute set as some
extended characters. You will have to run GRABCFG to change the default
colors to "non-bright" colors. Any of the available seven basic colors
will suffice to work along with this new version of WordPerfect.
B-4
GRAB With WordPerfect
Question - I am using WordPerfect version 5.0 and I load GRAB and
WordPerfect with a batch file from my WP directory. The batch file calls
GRAB first then loads WordPerfect. The problem is GRAB does not seem to be
loaded as I cannot access it. What is my problem?
Answer - It sounds like you have copied the GRAB files into your
WordPerfect directory. Version 5.0 of WordPerfect has added a program
called GRAB.COM to their distribution disks. What is happening is that you
have both a GRAB.COM file and a GRAB.EXE file of the same name but
different extensions. COM files take presence over EXE files. This means
you are loading the WordPerfect graphics screen "GRAB" and not our GRAB the
Envelope Printer. To keep this from happening, rename the WordPerfect
GRAB.COM file to be WPGRAB.COM. This will avoid the conflict of names and
let you use GRAB the Envelope Printer with no problem.
Canadian ZIP Codes
Question - I am from Canada, and as you know our zip code are different
from those in the States. You see we don't use a dash in our zip codes and
we have alphabetical characters. How can I use GRABDB with your format of
"#####-####"?
Answer - GRABDB will detect the Canadian zip code after you type it in.
The field is "#####-####" so you should type your zip code as "V8W 3-C8##",
ignoring the dash. After the initial adding of this record GRABDB will
detect the alpha characters and reformat it properly for your Canadian zip
code.
Hewlett Packard Envelope Tray
Question - I just purchased a new Hewlett Packard envelope tray, part
number 92295F. How do I use it? When I tried to use GRAB with the tray it
did some strange things. The printer gave me error messages, printed on
two envelopes, and then GRAB gave me an error message. What's wrong?
Answer - The envelope tray uses completely different tray selection
commands and different print locations. It printed on two envelopes
because it did a form feed to the next envelope. Also, the printer needs
to be manually reset when changing trays. You must make sure the printer
has been reset and the GRAB instruction window shows that you have toggled
the LaserJet II envelope tray selection with the key.
B-5
Hewlett Packard LaserJet IIP Tray
Question - I have the LaserJet IIP printer and cannot get GRAB to take an
envelope from the multi-purpose tray. It takes it from my lower tray.
Why?
Answer - If you are using the optional paper cassette for the LaserJet IIP
printer you must insure "Trays Both" is selected on the front panel
switches of your printer. If this is not done and you try to print an
envelope in the multi-purpose (MP) tray, the printer will only pull a piece
of paper from the optional lower cassette.

DeskJet Operation With GRABDB
-----------------------------
GRABDB will operate on the Hewlett Packard DeskJet printer. However, we
don't recommend using the water-soluble ink, since it can become smeared
during mail delivery. The non-water-soluble ink for the DeskJet, available
from Hewlett Packard, should give better results.
The DeskJet follows the LaserJet commands sent by GRABDB and will print the
labels by modifying the font selection codes. We've provided a set of
DeskJet soft fonts with a batch file so you can download them to the
printer. With the soft fonts you will have the same great looking labels
as the LaserJet.
NOTE
You must install an optional DeskJet
memory cartridge if you want to use
soft fonts.
If you do not have the extra memory required for downloading soft fonts to
your printer, then you may create similar effects by changing the font
select strings.
In the Font 80 string enter: [(s16hB
In the Font 90 string enter: [(s16h3B

D-4
Specifying Soft Fonts
The easiest way to specify fonts is by ID number.
Specify Fonts By ID Number
We recommend that you select fonts by ID number code as the best way to
use soft fonts.
You use an Escape character, a left parenthesis, an ID number, and a
capital X. Here is an example:
[(nnnX
[
This is an ASCII Escape character. Press Ctrl-P-Esc to enter the
escape character. This is always the first character in the code.
(
This is the left parenthesis. It is used to combine escape code
sequences.
nnn
This is a number you choose for the ID of the font. This should be a
number that will not conflict with other software that you are using.
X
This capital "X" is the termination character. It terminates the
escape character sequence.
In GRAB Plus you can use more than one font for different lines of the
address label.
* One font on the first line of the return address.
* A different font for the remaining lines of the return address.
* Still another font for the first line of the addressee.
* Another font for the remaining lines of the addressee.
* And finally another font for the comment line.
D-5
An Example Specifying Five Different Fonts By ID
Here is an example for using a different font for each available
selection of fonts in GRAB's configuration program.
Create A Batch File To Download Fonts
Use a text editor to create a batch file like this:
*download tr12rpn.usl 523<--- TIMES ROMAN 12 POINT WITH ID 523
download tr1rpn.usl 524 <--- TIMES ROMAN 10 POINT WITH ID 524
*download hv12rpn.usl 525<--- HELVETICA 12 POINT WITH ID 525
download hv1rpn.usl 526 <--- HELVETICA 10 POINT WITH ID 526
*download pk12rpn.usl 527<--- PARK AVENUE 12 POINT WITH ID 527
Give the batch file a name that you can use to command it from the DOS
prompt. For example, you could name it "ENVFONTS.BAT", for
"envelope fonts".
NOTE For DeskJet Users!
When you specify fonts to download to the DeskJet
printer, you must load the font with the largest file
size first, then the largest remaining, and so on in
descending order.
Before you specify the fonts, display the directory in
which the fonts are located. From the DOS prompt
type "DIR" and press RETURN. The directory will
list the size of all the files in bytes. Make a note of
the font file names in descending order according to
their file size in bytes. Create your batch file with
the fonts for downloading in that descending file
size order.
*These font files are included with the GRAB Plus distribution disk.
The other font files (or any additional ones) must be ordered from
Elfring Soft Fonts. You can contact them at (708) 377-3520.

Switching Between Soft Fonts
If you plan on switching between soft fonts, you must configure GRAB to
accept ONE soft font ID number. Then you can download different soft
fonts with the same ID number.
Here is an example:
* Configure GRAB to select soft font ID number 501.
Enter [(51X
* From the DOS prompt, enter a download command for one specific font and
add the font ID "501". When you want to switch to a different font, you
do not have to go back to GRAB's configuration program to change the
font specification! Just enter another download command from the DOS
prompt specifying a different font, but you add the same font ID "501".
Here is an example of three different font specifications with the same
font ID number:
download tr12rpn.usl 51<---- PICKS TIMES ROMAN 12 POINT
download hv12rpn.usl 51<---- PICKS HELVETICA 12 POINT
download pk12rpn.usl 51<---- PICKS PARK AVENUE 12 POINT
If you do not want to have to type the download command each time
you want to change fonts, you can create separate little batch files
that will save you a lot of key strokes to do the same thing.
