Modem Status, hereafter referred to as MODSTAT, is a simple little
utility that reads DOBBSn.BAT as created by FrontDoor, and creates
ASCII and ANSI files showing the user's CONNECT string, with some
analysis of common connections. It will, for example, suggest a high
speed caller try to call back for a better handshake if they are on with
no error correction. Or, that a 2400 bps caller with a non-error
correcting modem consider purchasing a new modem ;-)
It can be run from a self-executing choice in RA's TOP.MNU, then
displayed in that same menu as a text file. Or, you can place a line
at the top of a file like WELCOME1.A?? that runs it from a text file
shell, taking care to toggle such shells OFF in your TOP.MNU to
protect your system from unwanted ANSI sequences in, for example,
bulletin doors.
To do so, simply add
^XC:\RA\MODSTAT.EXE C:\RA\TXT\STATUS*N|
where ^X is really Control-X, and the parameter (the only one accepted
by MODSTAT) is the path and base name of the screen you wish generated.
The *N is a RA parameter that will ensure that each node has a uniquely
named screen, e.g. STATUS2.A??.
In your display command, disable ALL nodes except one, and put the
specifically named file in the optional data field, without extension,
of course. Do this for each node you have. Thus, if you have
2 nodes, you will have two autoexecuting commands that display, for
example, STATUS1 for node 1 and STATUS2 for node 2. RA does not allow
the use of the *N in the text file name, unfortunately.
If you are more daring, you can have it create only one screen for all
nodes, but don't tell me I did not warn you ;-)
MODSTAT is distributed as freeware, but donations are always welcome.
Perhaps BS/Ware can come up with more of these exciting and unique
things you wish you'd thought of, if you help!
