  9. START-UP TIPS**************************************************
  10.  
  11. Most problems in getting started with a modem can be solved by 
  12. properly setting up the communications software.  That's why 
  13. we've assembled these tips on using the most popular software 
  14. packages.
  15.  
  16. Look over this short introduction first.  Then, if your software 
  17. is included in the following listing (packages are in alphabetical
  18. order), review the tips provided.  Next, follow the modem 
  19. installation instructions in the modem manual.
  20.  
  21. NOTE:  If you have a problem with your software, you may need to 
  22. call your software company's technical support department.  We've
  23. included information for reaching each software company listed.
  24.  
  25. About Communications Software
  26.  
  27. 1.      Some operating parameters depend on how you have first 
  28.     set your software:
  29.     +       The rate of the transmission over the modem/
  30.         computer serial port.  Depending on your modem, 
  31.         that rate can range from 110 bits per second (bps)
  32.         to as high as 38,400 bps.
  33.     +       The length of each character (called word length),
  34.         either 7 or 8 bits, and whether Even, Odd or no 
  35.         parity is used.  Most common are 7/Even and 
  36.         8/None. 
  37.     +       The number of Stop bits used, usually 1.
  38.  
  39. When the modem receives the AT characters from your computer, it 
  40. detects their speed, word length, parity and number of Stop bits,
  41. and adopts those parameters.
  42.  
  43. NOTE:  To exchange data successfully, two modems must also use 
  44. the same word length, parity, and number of Stop bits.  You'll 
  45. have to find out what the modem at your call's destination 
  46. requires.
  47.  
  48. 2.      Terminal Mode.  This is the computer mode that allows you
  49.     to directly command the modem.  When possible, we've 
  50.     provided instructions for entering Terminal Mode with a 
  51.     particular software package.
  52.  
  53. 3.      Autoconfiguration.  Some programs allow you to select and
  54.     automatically configure the correct USRobotics modem from
  55.     a menu.  But it takes time for software companies to 
  56.     catch up with new products.  If you don't find your new 
  57.     modem on the menu, try the following.
  58.

  68.     If none of these options are available, put the computer 
  69.     in Terminal Mode and send the modem the listed 
  70.     configuration string.
  71.  
  72. 4.      Modem Configuration String.  As an alternative to 
  73.     autoconfiguration, or as a means of optimizing 
  74.     performance, this string configures the modem.  In some 
  75.     cases, the configuration string also saves the settings 
  76.     to non-volatile memory as a default.  The configuration 
  77.     string is based on the AT command set described in the 
  78.     modem manual.
  79.  
  80. 5.      Data Rate Features.  Most programs use the term baud to 
  81.     mean rate in bits per second, as in 9600 baud.  The term 
  82.     autobaud means that the software and modem automatically 
  83.     change their serial port rates to match the rate at which
  84.     the modems connect.  Depending on your modem, the possible
  85.     range is from 110 bps to 14,400 bps.
  86.  
  87.     In general, USRobotics modems connect at the highest 
  88.     possible speed, depending on the remote modem's 
  89.     capabilities.
  90.  
  91.     USRobotics error-control modems (V.42/MNP) switch down 
  92.     to connect over the phone line, but still can lock in a 
  93.     higher rate at the serial port, for better overall 
  94.     efficiency (&B1 setting).  However, this requires that 
  95.     the software's serial port rate also be locked, rather 
  96.     than set for autobaud as explained above.  We've listed 
  97.     information on this feature for each program that supports
  98.     it. 
  99.  
  100. 6.      Dialing Directories.  Most programs allow you to save the
  101.     names, phone numbers, and the correct software or modem 
  102.     parameters required for specific connections.  Later, 
  103.     when you select an entry in the directory, the software 
  104.     automatically performs the necessary configuration and 
  105.     dials the number for you.
  106.  
  107. About the Modem
  108.  
  109. 1.      DIP Switches.  The first thing to do with your modem is 
  110.     to set the 8 DIP switches (located either in the base or 
  111.     back of the modem) according to your software 
  112.     requirements.  You'll find a simple illustration for each 
  113.     program with the recommended switch positions.
  114.  
  115. 2.      High Performance.  You'll get top-notch performance from 
  116.     the modem if your communications software supports 
  117.     hardware flow control (Request to Send/Clear to Send, or 
  118.     RTS/CTS), and allows you to lock in the modem's serial 
  119.     port rate.  Check the listings for your software to see 
  120.     if these features are available.  
  121.  
  122.     The AT commands &H1 and &R2 set the modem for hardware 
  123.     flow control, and &B1 sets the modem to maintain a higher
  124.     rate at the serial port than the rate on the phone line.  
  125.     If you can't use hardware flow control, you'll have to 
  126.     use software flow controlΩcheck the modem manual later.
  127.  
  128.     NOTE:  The &R2 command requires the RS indicator on the 
  129.     front panel of the modem to be on.  Power on the modem 
  130.     and start your software.  If the RS indicator is off, 
  131.     the modem isn't getting a Request to Send signal.  If 
  132.     we've listed the software as supporting RTS, either your 
  133.     computer or terminal doesn't support RTS, or you may have
  134.     a problem with your cable.

  175. Bitcom is a simple dialer program.  We recommend leaving DIP 
  176. switch 7 down and letting the modem function with factory 
  177. settings.
  178.  
  179. 1.      Load and run the program.
  180.  
  181. 2.      Select the Change Configuration option.  Check that the 
  182.     COM port is the one to which your modem is connected.
  183.  
  184.     NOTE:  Bitcom does not allow you to turn off the 
  185.     Auto-baud Detect function.  
  186.  
  187. 3.      To set up a call, choose the Select/Edit Phone Numbers 
  188.     option from the Main Menu.  Press F10 to add a directory 
  189.     entry, and specify the phone number and connection 
  190.     information.
  191.  
  192. Terminal Mode
  193.  
  194. There is no specific option within Bitcom to put the computer in 
  195. Terminal Mode.  If you want to send commands directly to the modem, 
  196. follow this procedure.
  197.  
  198. 1.      Choose the Select/Edit Phone Numbers option from the 
  199.     Main Menu.
  200.  
  201. 2.      Press F10 to add a record.
  202.  
  203. 3.      Fill in connection information, but leave the phone 
  204.     number field blank.  Save the record.
  205.  
  206. By selecting the blank phone number record to dial, you put the 
  207. program in Terminal Mode.  Type in any appropriate initialization
  208. and dial commands.

  252. 1.      Follow the prompts in the easy BINSTALL program.  You will
  253.     be asked in what directory (or directories) you want to 
  254.     save the groups of files.
  255.     +       Blast program and support programs
  256.     +       Blast help, script and setup files
  257.  
  258. 2.      You are then prompted to set up the following parameters.
  259.     +       Color selection
  260.     +       Modem script choice
  261.  
  262.     +       Baud rate (specify the highest serial port rate 
  263.         your hardware supports)
  264.     +       COM port (select the serial port to which your 
  265.         modem is connected)
  266.     +       Terminal emulator (PC ANSI is the format for 
  267.         PC-to-PC and most BBS communications)
  268.  
  269.     If you've already installed Blast, or if you complete the
  270.     installation and decide to change any of these parameters,
  271.     you can edit them by typing BINSTALL CUSTOM from the 
  272.     prompt of the directory where you have copied the files.
  273.  
  274. 3.      Start the program by typing BLAST.  You can choose to 
  275.     view introductory information, or just press the ESC 
  276.     key to bring up the Offline menu.
  277.  
  278. 4.      Highlight the Select option and press Enter.  A prompt 
  279.     appears to "Enter setup name to load."
  280.  
  281. 5.      Press Enter again.  A list of options appears.
  282.  
  283. 6.      Highlight the Default option and press Enter.  The Default
  284.     Setup options screen appears, with the parameters for the 
  285.     USRobotics modem you selected when you installed the 
  286.     software.
  287.  
  288. 7.      Select the Modify option at the top of the screen so that
  289.     you can edit the Default Setup.  A cursor appears in the
  290.     first field on the screen.
  291.  
  292. 8.      Move down to the XON/XOFF Pacing field.  Highlight the 
  293.     word YES, and press the Space bar.  The field toggles to
  294.     NO.
  295.  
  296. 9.      Then move to the RTS/CTS Pacing field.  Highlight the 
  297.     word NO, and press the Space bar.  The field toggles to 
  298.     YES.
  299.  
  300. 10.     Press Enter to go on to the Online menu and make a call 
  301.     with this setup, or press ESC to exit the program.

  305.  
  306. Follow this procedure to communicate directly with the modem.
  307.  
  308. 1.      From the Main Menu, select Online.
  309.  
  310. 2.      In the next menu, select Connect.
  311.  
  312. 3.      In the next menu, select Terminal.  The computer is now 
  313.     in Terminal Mode.
  314.  
  315. 4.      To exit, press CTRL-K-K.

  428. Insert the program disk and type CCSTART.  You have the option of 
  429. installing three different files:  CCINSTAL (the installation 
  430. module), CCHELP (the Remote package) and CC (the Host package).
  431.  
  432. 1.      Select CCINSTAL and follow the prompts.
  433.  
  434. 2.      Choose a modem script (descriptor file) that includes the 
  435.     following commands:  &B1, &H1, &R2, and &W.  Unlike most 
  436.     programs, Carbon Copy doesn't allow you to directly 
  437.     command the modem with AT commands.
  438.  
  439.     Descriptor files are constantly being upgraded.  If you 
  440.     don't see your modem on the list, call Carbon Copy 
  441.     Support and ask if they have an updated file.
  442.  
  443. 3.      Verify that the COM port displayed on the screen is the 
  444.     one to which your modem is connected, and that you have 
  445.     set the highest possible serial port rate (at least 
  446.     19200).
  447.  
  448.     NOTE:  Carbon Copy only uses RTS/CTS (hardware flow 
  449.     control).
  450.  
  451. 4.      Depending on whether you intend to use this PC for Host 
  452.     or Remote operations, select CC or CCHELP to continue 
  453.     installation.
  454.  
  455.     NOTE:  With versions prior to 6.0, Carbon Copy had a 
  456.     built-in protection based on the product serial number.  
  457.     This prevented you from taking one purchased copy of the 
  458.     program, installing the Host side on one computer and the
  459.     Remote side on another computer, and then establishing a 
  460.     connection between them.  This limitation no longer exists
  461.     in version 6.0.

  506. Close-Up is sold as two different packages:  the Support/ACS 
  507. program and the Customer/Terminal program.  The Support and 
  508. Customer programs are intended to work together; while either 
  509. program can call the other, applications always run on the 
  510. Customer computer and are viewed and controlled by the Support 
  511. computer.  Two Customer programs can talk to each other, but two 
  512. Support programs cannot.

  515. To Set Up Support:
  516.  
  517. 1.      Type SUPPORT and press Enter.
  518.  
  519. 2.      Press ALT-S, select Setup, and press Enter.
  520.  
  521. 3.      Select the Modem option.  Press Enter to change the 
  522.     setting to User Defined.

  524. 4.      Change the initialization string to AT&B1&H1&R2&W.  
  525.     Press Enter twice.

  528.     to 19200, or the highest serial port rate your hardware

  535. 7.      To save these settings, press ESC.  Select File and press
  536.     Enter.  Select Save Menu Parameters, press Enter, and 
  537.     then type Y.

  540. To Set Up Customer:

  542. 1.      Type CUSTOMER and press Enter.

  544. 2.      Press ALT-M, select Setup, and press Enter.

  546. 3.      Select the Modem option.  Press Enter to change the 
  547.     setting to User Defined.

  549. 4.      Change the initialization string to AT&B1&H1&R2&W.

  620.  
  621. Co/Session is a remote access package made up of two programs, 
  622. Support and Application.  The Support program is installed on a 
  623. PC that is intended to remotely access or control another PC or 
  624. network.  Application is installed on the Host PC.
  625.  
  626. The following setup instructions apply to both programs.
  627.  
  628. 1.      Create a directory on your hard disk and copy all the 
  629.     files from the floppy.
  630.  
  631. 2.      Type SCALLID to bring up the Phone Book Setup screen.  
  632.     There will be one default entry listed.
  633.  
  634. 3.      Press F3 to change the default entry.  A screen with 
  635.     detail fields for the default entry appears.
  636.  
  637. 4.      Tab down to the COM Port section.
  638.  
  639. 5.      Press P repeatedly to toggle to the COM Port to which 
  640.     your modem is connected.
  641.  
  642. 6.      Press B repeatedly to toggle to the highest serial port 
  643.     rate your hardware permits (at least 19200).
  644.  
  645. 7.      Press M to select from a menu of modems.  If you see your
  646.     modem on this list, highlight it and press Enter.
  647.  
  648. 8.      If you do not see your modem, select one of the CUSTOM 
  649.     options and press Enter.  A screen appears on which you 
  650.     can customize your connect options.
  651.     +       In the Initialize field, type the following 
  652.         string:  AT&B1&H1&R2&W] (the "]" character is 
  653.         used by Co/Session to terminate the string).
  654.     +       Tab to the H/W Flow Control field and press Enter
  655.         to toggle to YES.
  656.     +       Press F10 to accept these changes, and press F10 
  657.         again to save the default entry.
  658.  
  659.     Every new entry you add to the Phone Book will now default
  660.     to these settings.  Press F1 to add an entry.
  661.  
  662. 9.      To load the program, type either SUPPORT or APPLICA, 
  663.     depending on which program you are using.

  711. 1.      Insert the program disk and type INSTALL from the A: 
  712.     prompt.  As part of the full installation program, you 
  713.     will be asked to verify your COM Port (make sure that 
  714.     the serial port is the one to which your modem is 
  715.     connected) and Port Speed (set to 19200 or as high as 
  716.     your hardware permits).
  717.  
  718. 2.      You will also be asked to choose a modem type.  Selecting 
  719.     a USRobotics modem from the list does not start an 
  720.     auto-configuration process of the modem or software 
  721.     defaults.  You will still need to enter a modem 
  722.     configuration string in the phone book card you create 
  723.     for a call.  Therefore, you can select any USRobotics 
  724.     modem at this time.
  725.  
  726. 3.      You are next prompted to load a new script (NEWCALL).  
  727.     To perform such operations as creating dialing entries, 
  728.     enabling Terminal Mode, and setting up for auto answer, 
  729.     you must create "cards" in the program "phone book."  
  730.     Select the option to "Enter information for a new card."
  731.  
  732. 4.      Define the parameters for the kind of entry you want to 
  733.     create, such as phone number to dial, port speed and 
  734.     script file.
  735.  
  736. 5.      Once the entry is created, press ALT-D to review the 
  737.     Device options for the card.  This is where you enter 
  738.     the modem configuration string; make this AT&B1&H1&R2&W.
  739.     You can also enter strings for dialing prefix/suffix and 
  740.     auto answer.  Verify the COM port, and set the highest 
  741.     serial port rate your hardware supports.  Select hardware 
  742.     flow control.  You should also specify the word length, 
  743.     parity and stop bit format that is compatible with the 
  744.     system you will be calling.
  745.  
  746. 6.      Another option under Device, called Local, determines 
  747.     whether the card represents an entry to be dialed 
  748.     automatically (Local = OFF) or a Terminal Mode operation 
  749.     where you must execute a dial string (Local = ON).  Create
  750.     one card with Local ON so that you can put the computer 
  751.     in Terminal Mode.

  753. 7.      Press ALT-M to display all Alt key commands.

  755. 8.      Press ALT-F10 to display a menu from which you can 
  756.     execute a card in the phone book, or display it for

  991. This package contains two operation modes, Host and Remote.  The 
  992. purpose of these options is to allow you to set up one PC (Host 
  993. Mode) that will run applications, while another PC at a different 
  994. location (Remote Mode) can dial up and monitor and control the 
  995. application.

  997. Installation of Host Mode:
  998. 1.      Install and load the program.  From the Main Menu, choose 
  999.     Hardware Configuration.  Press the Insert key and assign
  1000.     a Configuration Name (for example, USRobotics).
  1001.  
  1002. 2.      Press the Enter key and specify the serial port to which 
  1003.     the modem is connected.
  1004.  
  1005. 3.      Choose the appropriate USRobotics modem from the list.
  1006.  
  1007. 4.      Select the highest baud rate (serial port rate) your 
  1008.     hardware allows.
  1009.  
  1010.     NOTE:  This package automatically enables RTS/CTS

  1143. The software's Quick-Start Guide covers the easy-to-follow 
  1144. installation program.  Follow the prompts in PCINSTAL to load 
  1145. files and modify CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.  Use the 
  1146. autoconfigure feature to do initial configuration for specific
  1147. USRobotics modems.  After you have installed the program, you 
  1148. should make the following changes to assure optimal performance.
  1149.  
  1150. 1.      Before turning on the modem, set the modem's DIP switches
  1151.     as shown on the previous page.
  1152.  
  1153. 2.      Type PCPLUS to start the program, and press any key to 
  1154.     put the computer in Terminal Mode.  Press ALT-P to display
  1155.     the Current Settings window.  The line at the top of the 
  1156.     window shows you what values are currently set for the 
  1157.     default serial port rate, parity, data bits, stop bits 
  1158.     and serial port.
  1159.     +       Be sure that you have set the highest serial port
  1160.         rate possible for your computer.  We recommend 
  1161.         setting the rate to at least 19200; if your 
  1162.         computer permits, select 38400.
  1163.     +       The parity, data bits and stop bits may vary for 
  1164.         different calls that you make.  For now, accept the 
  1165.         default format of no parity, eight data bits and 1 
  1166.         stop bit.  You can always specify different data 
  1167.         formats later when you create entries in the Dialing 
  1168.         Directory.
  1169.     +       Verify that the COM port displayed is the one to which 
  1170.         you have connected your modem.

  1172.     Make any necessary changes in this window and then press 
  1173.     ALT-S to save the settings.  The program will return to the 
  1174.     Terminal screen.

  1176. 3.      Press ALT-S to enter the Setup Utility.  Select Modem Options 
  1177.     and then General Options.  In this window, verify that "Auto 
  1178.     Baud Detect" is OFF and that "Send Init if CD High" is NO.  
  1179.     Then press ESC to return to the submenu.

  1181. 4.      Select Modem Commands.  Verify that the initialization command
  1182.     is set to ATZ^M.  Press ESC twice to return to the Main Menu.

  1350.     to call, then press F3 to duplicate the entry.  Type a new name

  1354. 3.      Press the F4 key to set such options as flow control, file 
  1355.     transfer protocol and parity.  Do this for each entry.

  1419. TAPCIS is designed to cut your online time with CompuServe to a minimum.
  1420. You may download a 21-day trial copy, or obtain a registered copy 
  1421. directly from the Support Group through their 800 number.  There is no
  1422. setup program; follow these steps.
  1423.  
  1424. 1.      Create a TAPCIS directory on your hard drive.
  1425.  
  1426. 2.      Copy all files to your TAPCIS directory.  Type TAPCIS to start
  1427.     the program.
  1428.  
  1429. 3.      Type P for Parameters, then press C repeatedly to toggle 
  1430.     through a list and select the COM port to which your modem is 
  1431.     attached.
  1432.  
  1433. 4.      Press I to customize the modem initialization string.  This 
  1434.     is actually the dialing command, so ideally this should 
  1435.     include ATDT along with any additional commands you need 
  1436.     (for example, ATDT9, ATDT1, etc.).
  1437.  
  1438. 5.      You must select key settings so the program will recognize 
  1439.     different types of result messages.
  1440.     +       Type O for Online Report.  Use the four-character 
  1441.         string NECT for the program to key in on the CONNECT 
  1442.         message.
  1443.     +       Type F for Fail Report.  Use the four-character string
  1444.         RIER for the program to key in on the NO CARRIER 
  1445.         message.
  1446.     +       The final key setting is the telephone number.  TAPCIS 
  1447.         stores up to four numbers.  Enter the port speed along
  1448.         with the telephone number.

  1450. 6.      Complete the installation by filling in the parameters that 
  1451.     are specific to your CompuServe access.

  1498. 1.      Load the program and press ALT-O to bring up the Configure 
  1499.     Telix window.

  1501. 2.      Under Terminal Options, verify the following.
  1502.     +       The COM port to which your modem is connected.
  1503.     +       Your serial port rate is set to the highest level 
  1504.         permitted by your hardware (at least 19200 for high 
  1505.         speed modems).
  1506.     +       The data bits, parity and stop bits are set to a 
  1507.         common format (such as 8, None, 1).
  1508.     +       XON/XOFF flow control is OFF.
  1509.     +       CTS/RTS hardware flow control is ON.
  1510.     +       DSR/DTR flow control is OFF.
  1511.     +       The default terminal type is ANSI-BBS.

  1513. 3.      Return to the menu, and select Modem and Dialing.  Verify that
  1514.     Auto Baud Detect is OFF.  This is also the screen where you
