  1. Welcome to Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows 
  2. ===============================================

  4. Adobe(tm) Acrobat(tm) software gives you instant access to documents in 
  5. their original form, independent of computer platform. With the Acrobat 
  6. Reader, you can view, navigate, print, and present any Portable Document 
  7. Format (PDF) file.
  8.  
  9. This Read Me file contains installation instructions and product 
  10. information for the Acrobat Reader program. The On-line Guide 
  11. (help_r.pdf) also provides essential information to help you begin 
  12. using Acrobat Reader 2.1.

  14. If you are redistributing Acrobat Reader, place this Read Me file 
  15. standalone in the directory with the acroread.exe file to assist the end 
  16. user with installation of the program.

  30. NEW FEATURES IN ACROBAT READER 2.1
  31. ==================================
  32. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now runs under Windows NT 3.5 (or later), Windows 3.1, 
  33. and Windows 95, as well as OS/2 2.11 or later in Windows compatibility 
  34. mode. Adobe's ATM technology for rendering Type 1 fonts has been built 
  35. into Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows so it is no longer necessary to install 
  36. ATM on Windows systems.
  37.  
  38. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now accepts some specially enabled plug-ins, such as 
  39. Weblink and Movie. This allows Acrobat Reader users to take advantage of 
  40. new capabilities in PDF files created with Acrobat Exchange, for example 
  41. following World Wide Web (URL) links or viewing QuickTime (Macintosh and 
  42. Windows) and AVI (Windows only) movies within a PDF document.
  43.  
  44. Printing quality has been improved to non-PostScript printers.
  45.  
  46. Limitations in printing to some non-Postscript printers with non-square 
  47. pixels (some fax modems and dot-matrix printers) have been removed.
  48.  
  49. Acrobat Reader 2.1 generates DSC-compliant PostScript when used with the 
  50. AdobePS 3.0 (or later) driver.

  53. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
  54. =========================
  55. To install Acrobat Reader 2.1 on your hard drive:
  56.  
  57. 1. From the Windows Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu and type 
  58.  
  59.    [cd-rom drive]:acro_v2\acrowin\disk1\setup.exe 
  60.   
  61. 2. Follow the instructions on your screen. Installation requires approximately 
  62.    3 MB of free hard disk space. 
  63.    
  64.  
  65. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  66. ===================
  67. - 386-, 486-, or Pentium-based personal computer 
  68. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or greater
  69. - 4 MB application RAM
  70. - 4 MB hard disk space
  71. - 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive

  75. USING THE WEBLINK TOOL WITH ACROBAT READER
  76. ==========================================
  77. To use the Weblink plug-in to follow links, you must set up your browser to
  78. recognize Acrobat Reader. See the Adobe Home Page (http://www.adobe.com)
  79. for information on configuring your browser to recognize PDF documents.
  80.  
  81. To install the Weblink plug-in:
  82.   1. Copy the Weblink plug-in to the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins directory.
  83.      If you just installed Acrobat Reader, the Weblink plug-in may
  84.      already exist in the Plug-ins directory.
  85.   2. Restart Acrobat Reader.
  86.  
  87. To select your Web browser:
  88.   1. Choose Edit>Preferences>Weblink.
  89.   2. Click Browse, then select your Web browse from the dialog box.
  90.   3. Choose a Connection Type. Standard is the connection type for
  91.      the supported browsers Netscape 1.1 and Spyglass Mosaic 2.0.
  92.  
  93. To open your web browser from Acrobat Reader click the Web browser button
  94. in the toolbar. This feature fails intermittantly in Windows 95.
  95.  
  96.  
  97. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  98. ================
  99. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  100. -----------------------------------------
  101. When launched, the Acrobat Reader installer (SETUP.EXE) makes a copy 
  102. of the SETUP.EXE file in the temp directory specified in the 
  103. AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When the drive and directory listed in the "Set temp=" 
  104. line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are invalid or you don't have write access 
  105. to that drive and directory,or enough space on the drive, the Acrobat Reader 
  106. installation fails, and returns the errors "Cannot load the language 
  107. library", "Cannot load the license agreement", or "Not enough free disk 
  108. space to continue installation".
  109.  
  110. Do one or more of the following: 
  111. A. Ensure there is at least 4-8MB free disk space available on the hard 
  112.    drive onto which Acrobat Reader is being installed.
  113. B. Ensure the "Set temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is valid: 
  114.    1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor that saves as text-only 
  115.       (e.g., Windows Write, Notepad). 
  116.    2. Locate the line that reads "Set temp=" and verify the drive and 
  117.       directory following the equal sign are valid. When the "Set temp=" 
  118.       line points to an invalid drive or directory, edit the line to point 
  119.       to a valid drive and directory, then save the file as text-only. 
  120.    3. Reboot the computer.
  121. C. Ensure you have write access to the drive where the TEMP directory 
  122.    is located.
  123.  
  124. Windows 95
  125. -----------
  126. Installation From the Network -- If you set up a network server with 
  127. the Acrobat Reader installation disk images (this problem does not occur 
  128. with the single-file Reader Installer) so users can install Acrobat Reader 
  129. over the network, the user installing the software must run the 
  130. installation from a network drive that is mapped, not directly from the 
  131. Network Neighborhood. The easist way to assign (map) a drive letter to a 
  132. network computer or folder is as follows:
  133.  
  134. 1. On the Windows 95 desktop, right mouse click My Computer, and then 
  135.    click Map Network Drive. The Map Network Drive dialog appears.
  136. 2. Select a Drive letter.
  137. 3. Select a Path to the network server you want. 
  138.    For example:
  139.       \\computername\foldername
  140.    If a password is required, Windows prompts you. 
  141.  
  142. After the drive has been mapped, double click on My Computer to open the 
  143. My Computer window. The drive name and letter you just mapped will be 
  144. listed and can be used to navigate to the Acrobat Reader install disks.
  145.  
  146. Weblink Plug-in
  147. ---------------
  148. * Spyglass Mosaic under Win32s crashes intermittantly when a download is
  149.   cancelled from Weblink.
  150. * An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  151.   download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name. Acrobat 
  152.   Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this document. 
  153.   File does not begin with %PDF-".
  154. * If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  155.   Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  156.   your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  157.   not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  158.   in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request. 
  159.  
  160. PCL Printing
  161. ------------
  162. The printer drivers shipped with Microsoft Windows 3.1 for the HP LaserJet 
  163. III, IIID, IIIP, and IIISi printers may not work well with Acrobat Reader 
  164. (and other applications for that matter). Adobe recommends you use a PCL 
  165. printer driver based on the Universal Printer Driver V.3.1.2. Here are four 
  166. ways to get this driver:
  167.  
  168. COMPUSERVE. Type ôGO MSLö to get to the Microsoft Software Library forum. 
  169. Download the file named HPPCL5.EXE. Place this file on an empty, formatted 
  170. DOS diskette then from DOS run the file to extract the driver and 
  171. installation instructions which are in the file named printer.txt.
  172.  
  173. MICROSOFT'S BULLETIN BOARD. Microsoft's bulletin-board download service 
  174. can be reached at 206-936-6735. It supports up to 9600 baud and you should 
  175. set up your modem to use 8-bit, 1 stop bit, and no parity. Once connected, 
  176. there is a menu-driven bulletin board. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE" 
  177. and follow the same directions as above.
  178.  
  179. MICROSOFT. If you don't have a modem, you may call Microsoft directly at 
  180. 206-637-7098 or 800-426-9400 and obtain the LaserJet III printer drivers 
  181. on a diskette.
  182.  
  183. HEWLETT PACKARD. Again, if you don't have a modem, you may call Hewlett 
  184. Packard directly at 303-353-7650 and obtain the LaserJet III printer 
  185. drivers on a diskette. You may also use this number to obtain the latest 
  186. printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 4, DeskJet, and PaintJet families of 
  187. printers.
  188.  
  189. If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers in the 600-dpi 
  190. mode try switching back to 300-dpi mode or if it is equipped with a 
  191. PostScript option, use the PostScript mode for 600-dpi printing. This 
  192. 600-dpi PCL5 printing problem does not seem specific to Acrobat.
  193.  
  194. If outline-style text is printing incorrectly to a PCL printer (outlines 
  195. printing on top of black characters) make the following change in the ATM 
  196. Conrol Panel: check the option to "Print ATM Fonts as Graphics." 
  197.  
  198. To properly print certain special text effects (such as shadow, zoomed 
  199. text, or outlined text) to non-PostScript printers it may be required to 
  200. select the Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option in the ATM Control Panel. 
  201. Certain printer drivers including the LaserJet PCL4 (Series II and higher), 
  202. PCL5 (LaserJet III and LaserJet 4 families) and the Lexmark PPDS (4029 & 
  203. 4029) always print black soft fonts on top of images and non-black text 
  204. strings. 
  205.  
  206. Documents with various graphic images may not print correctly to the 
  207. LaserJet 4 in PCL mode at 600 dpi unless the Graphics option in the Windows 
  208. printer driver setup is set to Raster mode. 
  209.  
  210. To increase printer performance of documents formatted entirely in 
  211. landscape orientation to non- PostScript printers the printer driver 
  212. must be set in landscape orientation in the Windows printer setup. 
  213.  
  214. Postscript Printing
  215. -------------------
  216. AdobePS 3.01 Driver  For best results when printing to PostScript printers, 
  217. Adobe recommends you use the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver. The driver  
  218. and installation instructions are included on the Acrobat 2.1 Sampler CD.
  219.  
  220. AdobePS 2.1.1 Driver  You may experience problems when printing from 
  221. Acrobat Reader 2.1 when using the AdobePS 2.1.1 printer driver. The 
  222. problems occur in printing certain documents that use TrueType fonts 
  223. or extended characters, such as typographic quote marks. A PSPrinter 
  224. 2.1.2 update that fixes both of these problems is available. The AdobePS 
  225. 2.1.2 update upgrades an installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 
  226. is available from the following sources:
  227.  
  228. COMPUSERVE.   Type GO ADOBE to get to the Adobe forum.
  229.  
  230. FTP.  AdobeÆs ftp Server is at ftp.adobe.com. The path to the updater is 
  231. ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/Applications/Drivers/Windows/adobeps.exe
  232.  
  233. WORLD WIDE WEB. AdobeÆs World Wide Web server is at http://www.adobe.com.
  234.  
  235. PHONE.  Call 800-521-1976 to have the AdobePS 2.1.2 update disk sent to 
  236. you directly. Shipping and handling charges may apply.
  237.  
  238. Note: The update is not the complete, standalone AdobePS 2.1.2 driver. 
  239. It will only update a previously installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1.
  240.  
  241. Memory Issues. If you encounter problems, such as as VMerror, printing 
  242. to PostScript Level 1 or 2 printers it may be because the printer has 
  243. little available memory (for example, a non-upgraded LaserWriter, LaserWriter 
  244. Plus, LaserWriter II NT or NTX). There are two potential solutions to this 
  245. problem: 
  246.  
  247. * In the General Preferences dialog (select from the Edit/Preferences 
  248.   menu) you may choose to use Serif only or Sans only for font substituion. 
  249.   This frees up additional memory in the printer and chances are your 
  250.   document will print successfully. 
  251. * The other option is to purchase more memory for your printer.
  252.  
  253. Apple Personal LaserWriter NT   If you are using an Apple Personal 
  254. LaserWriter NT printer that has not been upgraded to a Personal 
  255. LaserWriter NTR, Acrobat Reader won't be able to print substitute fonts. 
  256. Contact your Apple dealer for information on upgrading your printer.
  257.  
  258. Miscellaneous Issues
  259. --------------------
  260. CANON BJC 800 PRINTER - In order to properly print text, graphics, and images 
  261. to this printer be sure to check the Use Print Manager option in the Printers 
  262. control panel. 
  263.  
  264. CANON LBP-8IV - Use the printers bitmap mode for best results.
  265.  
  266. COMPAQ MGA8.DRV VIDEO DRIVER  Using this video driver (installed on Compaq 
  267. DeskproXL 586 (1024x768, 640x480, 256 colors) with Compaq Qvision 2000 board 
  268. may cause Acrobat Reader to crash. Solution: Turn off Page Caching in the 
  269. Edit > Preferences > General dialog.
  270.  
  271. HP DESKJET 500C  This printer has an unprintable area near the top of the 
  272. page. Be sure to use the Shrink to Fit option in Acrobat ReaderÆs Print 
  273. dialog.
  274.  
  275. FONT NOT FOUND  A font not found error may indicate that ATM did not have 
  276. enough memory to create a substitute font. See the Improving Performance 
  277. section of this file for information on how to increase the memory available 
  278. to ATM (if installed).
  279.  
  280. INSTALL  Due to problems with some Desktop Managers, during installation 
  281. the Adobe Acrobat  program group and the Acrobat Reader program item may 
  282. not be created. By default, the program is installed in the directory 
  283. c:\acroread and the executable is c:\acroread\acroread.exe.
  284.  
  285. LOTUS NOTES  When you open an embedded PDF file from a Notes database, 
  286. the Acrobat Reader window seems to flicker slightly. This is because Lotus 
  287. Notes is giving Acrobat Reader OLE instructions to Show, Hide, then Show 
  288. the PDF document.
  289.  
  290. MACH 32 VIDEO CARD FROM ATI  If you are using the MACH 32 ATI card, be 
  291. sure to use the 256-color mode with the Color Pallette ON. In other words, 
  292. do not use the 256-color mode with the color pallette off. For Acrobat, 
  293. make sure the Pallette is ON. 
  294.  
  295. NEC ULTRALITE VERSA LINEAR DRIVER  Rotated images may display with artifacts 
  296. when using the UltraLite Versa Linear 640x480 256 color video driver. 
  297. Solution: Use the UltraLite Versa 640x480 256 color driver.
  298.  
  299. NUMBER 9 VIDEO DRIVER  When Acrobat Reader's page caching is enabled, if 
  300. you experience horizontal lines running across the page try turning off the 
  301. turbo mode in the #9GXE video driver. This can be done via the Turbo menu 
  302. in the program #9GXE Status available in the ô#9 Hawkeye Control 
  303. Panel.
  304.  
  305. OLE  When viewing a PDF file which is an embedded OLE object, you can 
  306. only perform an incremental save, not a full save. Operations which 
  307. require a full size are things like inserting another PDF file. As a 
  308. result, you cannot perform this operation on an embedded OLE object.
  309.  
  310. OS/2  Acrobat Reader should run in the Windows 3.1 compatibility mode 
  311. of OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.1.1.
  312.  
  313. PAGE CACHING Page caching is disabled for 16-bit and 24-bit displays 
  314. and the option is grayed out in the General Preferences dialog.
  315.  
  316. PATTERNS  Files produced by the Acrobat Distiller containing patterns 
  317. may display slowly and cause memory shortages. This can often be the case 
  318. when applications represent patterns as thousands of small Type 3 font 
  319. characters. If you experience this problem, it is recommended to use 
  320. color rather than pattern fills.
  321.  
  322. PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS 1.0  No Adobe Acrobat group is created and no 
  323. program items/icons are created. See INSTALL problem above for description 
  324. of workaround. 
  325.  
  326. PHONENET  PhoneNet does not properly map Macintosh file names containing 
  327. upper-ASCII characters. As a result, you will not be able to open any such 
  328. files in Acrobat Reader. Solution: DonÆt use special characters in file 
  329. names to be accessed by both Macintosh and Windows users over a 
  330. PhoneNet network.
  331.  
  332. PRINTING FROM FILE MANAGER  Only one PDF file at a time can be selected 
  333. and printed from the File Manager.
  334.  
  335. ROTATED/TRANSFORMED TRUETYPE FONTS  You may encounter some problems with 
  336. displaying or printing rotated or otherwise transformed TrueType fonts. 
  337. This is a limitation of TrueType and Windows. For best results, we recommend 
  338. you use Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts in your documents. 
  339.  
  340. STANDARD MODE  Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not work in standard mode; you 
  341. must be running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode.
  342.  
  343. SYSHOOK  Syshook is an application that patches the system menus of 
  344. applications; it does not work well with Acrobat Reader. 
  345.  
  346. TRUE TYPE  TrueType fonts cannot be reencoded. Because of this limitation, 
  347. documents that were created using some special characters in a Type 1 font 
  348. may not display correctly if a TrueType version of the font with the same 
  349. name is installed on your system. When this happens, the error message 
  350. "Some text in the font and character 'FONTNAME ###' could not be displayed 
  351. or printed correctly. The font could not be reencoded." is displayed. Since 
  352. the Acrobat installers do not replace TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, 
  353. and Courier you may get this message with these fonts. Solution: Use the 
  354. Custom Install option to install a Type 1 version of these fonts.
  355.  
  356. WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS  The Windows for Workgroups Netware extensions 
  357. (\windows\netx.com) have been known to cause problems with Acrobat Reader's 
  358. Open dialog, as well as other application's Open dialog. 
  359. Solution: Contact Microsoft.
  360.  
  361. WRONG COLORS  If the colors on your monitor seem completely wrong, 
  362. try the following. In the Acrobat Reader's ini file (c:\windows\acroread.ini) 
  363. try changing the line 'IS8514=4' to 'IS8514=105'.
  364.  
  365.  
  366. TO CREATE YOUR OWN PDF DOCUMENTS
  367. ================================
  368. To take full advantage of the benefits of electronic documents, you can 
  369. purchase Acrobat Exchange, Acrobat Pro, or Acrobat for Workgroups with the 
  370. coupon contained in the Acrobat Reader On-line Guide (available on the 
  371. Acrobat CD Sampler) or by calling 800-87-ADOBE (800-872-3623). With the full 
  372. Acrobat products, you can:
  373.  
  374. - Create your own electronic documents as easily as printing from your 
  375.   existing applications with PDF Writer.
  376. - Protect your files with passwords; control access, printing, changing 
  377.   the document, adding and changing notes, copying text and graphics.
  378. - Find exactly what you need across multiple PDF files by searching on 
  379.   keywords, author, title, subject synonyms, etc.
  380. - Reuse information easily by extracting, copying, reordering and replacing 
  381.   pages among PDF files -- with bookmarks, links and notespreserved.
  382. - Create your own custom views into information.
  383. - Add value, set priorities and maintain a dynamic information network 
  384.   with links, bookmarks, notes and connections to external applications 
  385.   and documents.
  386. - Take advantage of third-party plug-ins to add new features to  Acrobat.
  387. - Integrate Acrobat with your desktop applications with Acrobat's support 
  388.   for OLE automation, Notes F/X, AppleEvents, and more.

  419. NOTICE TO USER:
  420. THIS IS A CONTRACT.  BY INDICATING YOUR ACCEPTANCE BELOW, YOU ACCEPT ALL THE 
  421. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT.
  422. This Adobe Systems Incorporated ("Adobe") End User License Agreement 
  423. accompanies an Adobe software product and related explanatory written 
  424. materials ("Software"). 
  425.  
  426. The term "Software" shall also include any upgrades, modified versions or 
  427. updates of the Software licensed to you by Adobe.  This copy of the Software 
  428. is licensed to you as the end user.  You must read this Agreement carefully 
  429. before indicating acceptance at the end of the text of this Agreement. 
  430. If you do not agree with the terms and conditions of this Agreement, decline 
  431. where instructed during installation, and you will not be able to use the 
  432. Software. Adobe grants to you a nonexclusive license to use the Software, 
  433. provided that you agree to the following: 
  434.  
  435. 1. Use of the Software. You may install the Software in a single location on 
  436.    a hard disk or other storage device; install and use the Software on a 
  437.    file server for use on a network for the purpose of permanent installation 
  438.    onto hard disks or other storage devices or use of the Software over such 
  439.    network; and make backup copies of the Software. You may make unlimited 
  440.    copies of the Software and give copies to other persons or entities as 
  441.    long as the copies contain this Agreement and the same copyright and other

  447.    Copyright Law and International Treaty provisions.  You agree not to 
  448.    modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or 
  449.    otherwise attempt to discover the source code of 
  450.    the Software.  You may use trademarks only to identify printed output 
  451.    produced by the Software, in accordance with accepted trademark practice, 
  452.    including identification of trademark owner's name.  Such use of any 
  453.    trademark does not give you any rights of ownership in that trademark. 
  454.    Except as stated above, this Agreement does not grant you any 
  455.    intellectual property rights in the Software.

  457. 3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, or sublicense the Software. You may, 
  458.    however, transfer all your rights to use the Software to another person 
  459.    or entity, provided that you transfer this Agreement with the Software.

  461. 4. No Warranty. The Software is being delivered to you AS IS and Adobe makes 
  462.    no warranty as to its use or performance. ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT 
  463.    AND CANNOT WARRANT THE PERFORMANCE OR RESULTS YOU MAY OBTAIN BY USING 
  464.    THE SOFTWARE OR DOCUMENTATION. ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS MAKE NO WARRANTIEs, 
  465.    EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS TO NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS, 
  466.    MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.  IN NO EVENT WILL 
  467.    ADOBE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL 
  468.    OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST SAVINGS, EVEN IF 
  469.    AN ADOBE REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH 
  470.    DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY.  
  471.    Some states or jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of 
  472.    incidental, consequential or special damages, or the exclusion of implied 
  473.    warranties or limitations on how long an implied warranty may last, so the 
  474.    above limitations may not apply to you.

  476. 5. Governing Law and General Provisions. This Agreement will be governed by 
  477.    the laws of the State of California U.S.A., excluding the application 
  478.    of its conflicts of law rules.  This Agreement will not be governed by 
  479.    the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale 
  480.    of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.  If any part 
  481.    of this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect 
  482.    the validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid 
  483.    and enforceable according to its terms.  You agree that the Software 
  484.    will not be shipped, transferred or exported into any country or used 
  485.    in any manner prohibited by the United States Export Administration 
  486.    Act or any other export laws, restrictions or regulations.  This 
  487.    Agreement shall automatically terminate upon failure by you to comply 
  488.    with its terms.  This Agreement may only be 
  489.    modified in writing signed by an authorized officer of Adobe.

  491. 6. Notice to Government End Users. If this product is acquired under the terms 
  492.    of a:  GSA contract- Use, reproduction or disclosure is subject to the 
  493.    restrictions set forth in the applicable ADP Schedule contract; 
  494.    DoD contract- Use, duplication or disclosure by the Government is subject 
  495.    to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of 252.227-7013;
  496.    Civilian agency contract- Use, reproduction, or disclosure is subject 
  497.    to 52.227-19 (a) through (d) and restrictions set forth in the accompanying
