  11. I am going to start an FTP upload of the new GRINOS-S.ZIP to WB6NIL as
  12. soon as I am done typing this message.  This version has significant
  13. enhancements, including:
  14.  
  15. -- A major bug fix caused by an incompatibility between the old and new
  16.    Borland C compilers, in collaboration with NOS replacing a library
  17.    function or two.  This caused TMP##.$$$ files to be created but not
  18.    deleted.  This bug has been repaired, but at the cost of no longer
  19.    supporting the user option to explicitly specify the directory to
  20.    be used for temporary files.  All temporary files will be created in
  21.    the current directory.
  22.  
  23. -- Correction of a stack framing error also related to the use of the
  24.    new Borland C compiler.  This may have been responsible for the
  25.    problems seen with the garbage collection routines for NOS memory.
  26.    I am still not confident of the garbage collection code.
  27.  
  28. -- Auto detection of machine class.  The "isat" flag should now be set
  29.    correctly for the type of processor found during initialization.  As
  30.    I explained earlier, it is now required that the "isat" flag be set
  31.    correctly for proper hardware interrupt handling, and this will
  32.    relieve most users of the need to worry about it.  The "isat" flag
  33.    can still be changed manually with the "isat 1" or "isat 0" commands
  34.    for cases where the auto detection fails for some reason.
  35.  
  36. -- Memory efficient mode now defaults to enabled.  I have already
  37.    recommended the use of efficient mode, although it can still be
  38.    changed by command.
  39.  
  40. -- Enhanced reporting of information with the "memory status" command.
  41.    Efficient and circular modes now show as enabled or disabled, and
  42.    the current memory threshold is displayed.
  43.  
  44. Remaining known bugs:
  45.  
  46. -- I still have not fixed the problem with shelling out to DOS or the
  47.    mailer in the first ten minutes or so before NOS has stopped calling
  48.    for more core.
  49.  
  50. -- Memory garbage collection may still be broken.
  51.  
  52. Immediate future plans:
  53.  
  54. -- A "tcp blimit" command that would provide a maximum backoff.  There
  55.    has been substantial demand for this feature.

  57. This version is designated KA9Q 910531/PA0GRI v1.6h/N1BEE 910612v0.2s.
  58. This is a beta-test release.  That means it should not be used on
  59. unattended switches.
