  7. The Great Transpolar Skitrek Expedition came to a successful conclusion on
  8. Wednesday June 1, 1988 at 14:35 UTC as the 13 skiers stepped ashore onto Ward
  9. Hunt Island. Ward Hunt, a tiny island off the coast of Cape Columbia,
  10. Ellesmere Island, has seen the beginning and end of many a polar expedition,
  11. but never one of this magnitude.

  13. The last days on the ice were spent with some frustration by the skiers. They
  14. were told that a 10 km wide lead of open water awaited them and that a
  15. special air drop of rafts might be necessary. Temperatures dropped from -4dC
  16. to -14dC, however, and the lead closed and froze to a rough ice state with
  17. many pools of open water. The skiers wove back and forth making very slow
  18. progress for a day or so before encountering more normal ice conditions.
  19. On the last day of their trek the skiers made 18 km or so, crossed the ragged
  20. boundary between pack and land ice and trekked ashore where they were met by
  21. a plane from Resolute. For classroom trek logs, the last position they
  22. reported (just off-shore) was 83d 06.8m North, 74d 39.2m West. End of trek
  23. medical tests were conducted by the two skier/doctors and the group headed
  24. south to Eureka where they were met by the press and trek support teams. The
  25. skiers are now in Ottawa for debriefing, family reunions and well deserved
  26. celebrations.

  40.    Daily reports are made by the team to communications support stations on
  41.    Sredniy Island, USSR, Russian ice station North Pole 28 and Resolute Bay,
  42.    Canada via amateur radio.  These reports are relayed south at 1500z in 
  43.    the 20m amateur radio band on 14.121mHz USB.  Reports are automatically 
  44.    taped at W0RPK and reduced to daily information notes for continuing logs.
