If the B&W model is the one that used to be called "the Embassy model", it
works by putting a fixed resistance across the far end of the line. If you can
tolerate 3 or 4 db. power loss, it works.

An antenna expert who lectured at a MARS convention I attended once said this:
"The simplest way to solve most multi-band antenna problems is to put up
the longest wire you have room for, break it in the middle with a ceramic
insulator, feed it with 400 to 600 ohm open wire line, and correct matching
errors at the transmitter output with a tuner. It isn't elegant as
theoreticians measure things, but it works."
I tried it, and he was right. It works great. Best bang for the buck I ever
found.

I regard Mr. Schmidling's condemnation of me for my views on his ARF as the
American ham radio equivalent of elevation to the peerage. Thank you, Jack.

Let me know when you find someone to point it out to you.

On the contrary, it's reading the subpart on technical standards that started
my wondering about it.

Jeepers, all this started because I asked a question. At no time did I claim to
be an authority nor did I claim to have any "police" powers.

You don't read too carefully. I never was asking about encryption. All I asked
was what bearing does the FCC rule that on HF we should not transmit ASCII
characters that aren't in ITA #5 have on compression methods that produce ASCII
characters not in ITA #5. Personally, I don't see why that's not a valid
question.

I've considered writing a daemon to serve up to the minute WEFAX images to
anyone on the Internet (what the hell... I might as well start collecting
ham related daemons 8-) And a while back someone posted saying they were
working on a greyscale FAX decoder that connected to an RS-232. I asked if
I could get one asap, but never got a reply.
I guess what I'm saying is if I can get the right equipment at a low price,
I'm willing to write the code to serve out the data. Anybody willing to
help out?
In my opinion, the Internet isn't being used to anywhere near its full
potential. We definitely need more servers like this.
