  30. The TM-721 is no longer available from Kenwood. There may be a few available
  31. at "closeout" from some dealers. The replacement is the TM-731. It improved
  32. the display and also fixed the PL decode problem. As I remember you could 
  33. not use PL (ok, CTCSS) DECODE on the main band, only on the sub-band. The
  34. TM-731 fixed this problem. Crossband repeating is also available. 
  35. The price of a new TM-731 is around $640.00. Call the 800 numbers for best
  36. deals.

  60. Yes I have the official 200,000th generation photocopy faxed from Yaesu 
  61. support and this is what it reports:

  63. 1 - Wiring: The tip of the phone jack is the serial output from 0x0 to
  64.         0x0f to represent signal strenth. All data to and from this
  65.         little beast is TTL levels 4800 baud two inverted stop bits
  66.         and one inverted data bit. My, I would like to meet the 
  67.         engineer that came up with that one :-)

  69.         The ring of the phone jack is the serial data input.
  70.  
  71.         The body of the phone jack is +12 volts. You are supposed to
  72.         get a ground from the body of the earphone jack. DO NOT SHORT
  73.         the BODY of the CAT port to the EAR or MIC jacks. If you
  74.         accidentally do this you let the smoke out of the IC's and 
  75.         everyone knows that IC's stop working if you let the smoke out!

  77. 2 - Software:

  79.  Control consists of duplicating the keystrokes that can me made on the
  80.  xceiver keypad by sending the corresponding key codes to the CAT jack.
  81.  the MSD (Most Significant four bits) select the key column and the LSD
  82.  (not to be confused with C14H15N2CON(C2H5)2 lysergic acid diethelamide)
  83.  forms the key row. The function key is simulated by setting bit 7.

  114.  I do admit it seems a little awkward at first but it does work. To 
  115.  start always go to a known spot. If you are unsure of the current 
  116.  setting of the V/U status set it to a programmed frequency and then
  117.  start. If you lose sync of the V/U switch I guess your beat!

  145.   I did a review of this book when I was doing the product review column
  146. for SPEEDX. This is a great book and must-have for any R71A owner. Lots of
  147. good tricks and tips like the no-hardware mod to increase the rigs freq
  148. range.
  149.   As I remember the book's price was a bit high, maybe $20 or so but still
  150. worth it.
  151.   I don't have an R71A anymore but I think I still have the book kicking
  152. around someplace if you want it real cheap.

  326.   This is a good radio but the bottom of the freq range starts at 60 Mhz.
