I don't know why ASCII doesn't have a cent sign.. Maybe the rest of
the world will catch up with IBM someday and use EBCDIC.. ;-)
(A cent sign in EBCDIC is x'4A')

Ooops! It was pointed out to me that my "From:" header in my posting
regarding our ages had a domain other than what my signature suggested.
It was '.UUCP' instead of '.MFEE.TN.US' as it should be. I had compiled
the news software for another site a while back, and then recompiled it
for me recently, but failed to revert back to me real domain.
The reason I am telling you this is that some Internet sites that don't
understand '.UUCP' will probably be unable to deliver direct email replies
to the posting. If so, please resend to 'root@mjbtn.mfee.tn.us'.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused interested respondees.
Thanks,
Mark.

I picked up a couple of books that I keep on the shelf next to the
Callbook and other references.
One is a "Merriam Webster Geographical Dictionary" which provides all
kinds of maps, geographical, political, and economic detail about more
places than I could ever run across on the air. I originally saw one in
the public library and when one appeared at a local mall bookstore, I
bought it.
Another is the "World Information Almanac" published by [don't laugh, now!]
the Central Intelligence Agency. It is available through the US Government
Printing Office Bookstores (you can mail order from them). It has information
about the political and social structure of the various places, and includes
the number of radio stations, how many airports, strange info like that. It
does *not* have the extreme detail in cities, counties, and geographical
entities (like rivers, mountains, named canyons, etc.) that the "MWGD" has,
but it does have some interesting facts.
...
At Dayton I noticed someone selling little atlases. At the time they seemed
high priced, but now that I have shopped around, maybe they weren't so bad.
Does anyone have one, with a "review" of its usefulness?
....
Here's one I *haven't been able to find:
M-V Island!
Where is it?
(Specifically! I know in general where it is!)

Dear members of the news group,
I wonder what happened to discussions about HAM RADIO? Now when I
read the net, I read about ordering pizza by patch, jammer nets,
shortwave radio equipment, monitoring fast food order desks,
military communications, the (F)avorite (C)ha-(C)ha, on and on
and on. Some of this stuff is good, most is BA-A-A-AD!!!!!!!!
Can we get on to the more important stuff, such as equipment
reports, construction hints, etc. and meet our official charter
from the government to do what part 97.1 says. I won't quote it,
because the NOVICE test had a question or two about it, and the
EXTRAs arguing must have forgotten about it. Let's remember what
HAM RADIO is about, and talk about the pleasureable side of
radio, not politics, legal interpretations, etc. UNLESS
absolutely NECESSARY!!
OK????????

IMHO, these topics are being discussed only for the first time, now
that a significant number of hams have an unedited forum. Letters
to the editor of QST (or any other rag) are woefully underrepresented.
Ham radio is a aged phenomenon in transition. I find relief in the
discovery that some hams value it so highly that they will speak up
about the stupidity inflicted upon (and by) hams.
We hams have got to unlearn a lot of the stuffy Harvard-Yale bullcrap
promoted by the Newington Cabal about the "brotherhood of amateur
radio" and being reminded to "avoid discussion of controversial issues
on the radio". The fact is, the ARRL permitted controversy only when
they were able to frame the issues.
Telecommunications has become increasingly politicized, to the extent
that today hams must be acquire an activist mentality in order
to simply remain hams. We can't go back to the good-old-days when
Uncle Hiram and the FCC slept together and made everything OK.

You are free to express any opinion you want to, but if you must use obscenity
to do it then we must all take that into consideration when valuing your
opinions. Yet another example of out of control?

Greg,
It's what Upper Volta is now called. It's in Africa, on the west coast I
think (I didn't bring my Popeil's Pocket Atlas into work today ;-)
