I know you are looking for a keyboard-initiated solution to
this, and I don't believe there is one. However, I believe
it can be done by messing with the internals. I have a
price sheet here of mods I picked up at a ham fest, and
Trionyx Inc of 6775 N 550E Bronsburg, IN 46112 offers to
extend the receive (and tx) of the Ft-470 to 430-470 for $85.
No, I don't know anything about this firm. I just hoard paper.

The band between 29.7 and 30 MHz receives almost no
coverage in the radio monitoring press. This may be due
to several years of poor propagation and unreliable
reception. This year, however, propagation has been
great, and listeners in the US can hear several
interesting, albeit difficult to identify communications
in that band.
Spanish language communications can be heard on FM
repeaters, like on 29.9 MHz, for example. I can hear a
dispatcher speak in an Eastern European language on 29.86
MHz USB.
Anyone else heard what sounds like Russian aero military
traffic using USB above the 10 meter ham band? By
agreement (WARC '79) the spectrum from 29.7 - 30.005 MHz
is allocated worldwide for fixed and mobile use only.
The language I heard could be Russian or other Eastern
European, but not French, Spanish, German, or anything
spoken in the Americas or in Asia.
Some of the stations sounded like they are transmitted
from an aircraft due to the ever present (400 Hz?) whine
on their signals. Net control was the strongest and had
no such whine.
29.9350 call?_____unidentified: air to ground comms,
sounds like Russian language, usb, 11/23/89

NEC uPC1651G "Silicon monolithic bipolar integrated circuit"
I just put together a circuit using that IC from All Electronics.
(A spec. sheet comes with it). Gain is flat out to ~300 MHz, peaks
around 700 Mhz (+23 dB), and drops stone-like beyond 1.1 Ghz.
Anyway, below 300 Mhz it's +19.5 dB +/- 0.5 dB, at 5 V, 20 mA.
Noise figure is specified 5.5 dB typ, 6.5 dB max at 500 Mhz, but
I didn't measure it. Not the best low-noise preamp around!
Power gain is specified at 16 dB min, 19 dB typ (500 Mhz).
Max. output spec. as 3 dBm typ, 5 dBm max (500 Mhz). At 200 Mhz,
I measured 1 dB gain compression at 0 dBm output, with 2nd harmonic:
Fundamental 2nd Harm.
0 dBm -10 dBm
-10 -28
-20 -56

Subject: Scanners with 12.5khz increments
I've notices more and more scanners are not offering 15khz. as a standard
increment for scanning. According to the freq. info I looked at high band is
pretty much 15khz increments as well as most of 2m.
Anybody have any ideas why 12.5khz. seems so popular and not 15khz?

SCAN THE GARBAGE TRUCKS AND WASTE DUMPS
by Bob Parnass, AJ9S
No, this article does not represent a new low in scanner
journalism, rather it deals with a topic "untouched"
heretofore by other publications!
Many disposal companies and waste haulers use two-way
radios in their trucks to communicate with dispatchers
and land fill operators.
The Greene Valley Land Fill is located in southwestern
Naperville and covers several acres. Trucks from many
companies dump refuse there. The site is operated by
Oakbrook-based Waste Management, Inc. under contract from
the DuPage County Forest Preserve. Listen for them on
463.425 MHz.
Browning-Ferris Industries operates the Mallard Lake
landfill in Bloomingdale.
I use Tri-County Scanvenger Service to haul garbage every
week. One day I was late setting my garbage containers
outside, so I telephoned the company dispatcher. I then
listened in on his dialog with the garbage truck driver
on 463.2 MHz, directing the driver to return to my home
for a late pickup.
