  26. No, it boils down to a technology difference.

  28. Cellphone base stations are really close together in airplane terms. The
  29. inflight telephones use similar technology but on different frequencies
  30. and with the cells much, much farther apart. They do not interoperate.

  54. which are general flight regulations applying to all flights inside the
  55. US or on US-registered aircraft.

  97. I built a Heathkit HW-2036A (2m synthesized rig) about 10 years ago.  It's
  98. always worked fine as far as I could tell...  However, last week I looked
  99. at its output on a Tek 2710 spectrum analyzer and was dismayed to see that
  100. the 2nd harmonic (around 290 MHz) was only down about 20 db from the
  101. carrier.  The higher harmonics were also right up there falling off with
  102. what appeared to be a sin(x)/x shape.  I got out the Heathkit manual and
  103. retweaked the final amp, but nothing I did significantly reduced the
  104. harmonics.  The specs in the manual say harmonics and spurs are -60dB.
  105.  
  106. Is this radio broken or are all HW-2036A rigs like this?

  108. The design of the output filter looks somewhat cheesy... That is, the coils
  109. just mount on the circuit board with no real shielding.  It looks like high
  110. frequency components would couple right through to the output (which they
  111. apparently do in my radio!).
  112.  
  113. Has anyone else looked at a HW-2036A on a spectrum analyzer?  Any comments
  114. or suggestions appreciated.

  170. Does anyone out there in net-land have any experience with Missouri Radio
  171. Center?  So far they've given me the lowest quote on an Icom IC-U16 handheld
  172. (commercial UHF - I'm in the public safety business) at $499, whereas most
  173. other places (Ham Radio Outlet, Amateur Electronic Supply, etc) have quoted
  174. about $599 for the same radio.  It seems strange that one place has it $100
  175. lower than anywhere else, hence my post.

  193.    Two techniques I've come across - one directly, one by repute: -
  194.  
  195. (a) a ZL replied to a bureau card by returning my card but with a rubber 
  196.     stamp on the back saying "verified".  I wasn't thrilled about this and 
  197.     I doubt that the DXCC guys would accept that!   But I'm not short of ZL 
  198.     cards, and whenever I send a card via the bureau it's with the expectation 
  199.     that I'll get no reply, so I can only be pleasantly surprised.
  200.  
  201. (b) I'm told that the DXCC guys received an application for DXCC, and had an 
  202.     uneasy feeling about the 100 or so cards submitted.  Then they realized 
  203.     that they were all the same size, and had only a few different print types 
  204.     represented on them.  The applicant had printed them all himself  - who
  205.     said the art of home-brewing is lost?

  220. Can someone tell me what the procedure would be for getting a reciprocal
  221. permit?  Would I be able to get it from the Consulate in San Francisco, or
  222. would I need to write to Washington?  Also, how long would it take?
