Sb: BETteR MX7000 MOD
THERE IS A POPULAR MX7000 MOD, WHICH IS ADDING A RESISTOR IN
PARALLEL WITH ONE ON THE CPU BOARD TO INCREASE SCAN/SEARCH SPEED.
BY CHANGING C3 FROM 33pF TO 8pF, YOU DON'T NEED TO DECREASE THE
RESISTANCE AS MUCH, WHICH YIELDS LONGER MEMORY BACKUP.

Subject: airport security
Re the discussion on HT's at the airport. I have done large amounts of
travel in the past years with BOTH an HT and a handheld scanner and the
only thing that has occured is to be asked to open the briefcase and
show them. I haven't even been asked to turn them on to show they work,
just let them see them lying in the briefcase. This includes such exciting
places as Laguardia (just last week), Kennedy, Ohare, Denver, SFO, LAX,
Seatle, etc. I have, more than once, overheard a new security guard ask
his/her supervisor, "does this person fit the profile?". One could guess
from this that certain people may get hasseled more than others if they
"fit the profile" whatever that is.......

Subject: Contest log program?
I've used some logging programs before, about 3 different ones (all for PC)
and my personal opinion is that they were all trash. Oddly enough the one
I thought worked best was written in BASIC by a non-programmer in one evening
as just a "quickie". Still I think I could do a lot better. Typical problems
with these programs are lack of ability to cancel and abort things that get
started, inability to change what's been typed in, and slow disk i/o and dup
lookups. If I can get a clear idea of what other people would like a logging
program to do, I might try writing one. If I do, it will be freeware. If
you want to tell me what you would like in one, start from the beginning;
don't say what you would like added to one. How should it work? What info
should it keep? What user interface does it need?

Subject: Icom IC-28 squelch modification
The long, noisy squelch-tail of the Icom IC-28 (A or H model) 2-meter
transceiver can be shortened by replacing C110 (4.7 uf) with a smaller
value (0.1 to 0.47 uf). (I can't remember the source of this
information.)
I put a 0.33 uf in my IC-28H; it's a very worthwhile modification.
The capacitor is on the bottom board (the one with the lithium
battery), just southeast of IC4 as you face the front of the upside-
down radio. The only difficult part is finding the right p-c pads to
desolder on the back of the board.
To remove the board: Remove bottom plate, unplug speaker. Unplug
coaxial antenna connector (gray wire). Other connectors may remain in
place. Remove 5 mounting screws, one in each corner and one near
center. Tilt the board out of the radio. The button in the upper
left corner is CPU reset; you may have to reprogram the memories if it
is pressed. Remember that, although the radio is off, parts of the
circuit are still "hot" because of the memory-backup battery, so be
careful not to short any part of the board during the modification.

Subject: Kenwood RZ-1 Wide Band Receiver
I'm considering purchasing the Kenwood RZ-1 mobile receiver, which I
read about in the 1989 World Radio TV Handbook. My main interest is
in FM and TV audio broadcast reception in my car, which is difficult
in the Bay Area due to the hilly terrain. I would also used it for
shortwave listening, and a perhaps a little bit of police band
monitoring (like when the next big one hits!). Does anyone have any
personal experience with this unit, or knowledge of other reviews that
have been published? Does anyone know of any competing units, or
whether Kenwood has a follow-on product planned?
Thanks for your help.

Subject: Letter from the FCC: 20M Maritime Mobile Net
Heard today on the K1MAN "broadcast" on 14275, Glen read the letter, yes
the same exact letter as appeared here. He also gave his response.
Apparently Glen was one of the "elite" selected few to receive the
original, and the SASE from the FCC.
Glen's reply was awfully self serving, I thought. From people dumping
comments on top of him, there were others who were not overly impressed.
His call should be K1EGO.

Sb: ARGOSY2.MOD.MOD
IN A PAST BULLETIN I TOLD OF A MOD TO ADD THE SPOT FEATURE OF THE
CORSAIR 2 TO THE ARGOSY 2 USING A MOMENTARY N/O SWITCH AND SOME
WIRE. WELL WITH THAT MOD, WHEN THE SWITCH IS PRESSED IF YOU GO KEY
DOWN YOU'LL HAVE THE "T" VOLTAGE APPLIED TO THE "R" LINE VIA THE
SWITCH. THIS COULD BE QUITE CONFUSING TO THE LITTLE ARGOSY AS ITS
BEING TOLD TO TRANSMIT AND RECEIVE AT THE SAME TIME. TO AVOID THIS
CONDITION ADD A DIODE IN LINE WITH THE SPOT SWITCH YOU'VE ADDED.

Norm Strong asks for recommendations on SW radios under $200 and is
constantly referred to the Sony 2010. It really is worth saving for;
an even better feature that is not found on ANY other receiver is this
ECSS mode that permits better reception-don't ask me to explain it, I'm
only a librarian!! Anyway, there was one recommendation for the Magnavox
2935 that has been discontinued by the manufacturer; EEB's price was quoted
but this model is carried by Sears and I've seen it in Erie for $178. Good
sound. This new Panasonic RFB-65 sounds good and I think you can find it
for $200, but I may be wrong, which is often, but at least I try and look
good, which is not bad, considering...done!

Subject: TM-721A upgrade info
Here is the latest information on the upgrade for the Kenwood TM721A / 621A...
The upgrade is only for the display and will not add any of the new
features found on the TM-731A / TM-631A radios. It will also not add the
ability to use the RC-20. (This is interesting to note since they also
now tell me (Kenwood service that is) that they do not recommend the
RC-20 on the TM-731A/631A, since all functions are not available).
The price is supposed to be less than $100.00 and it is even money if it will
be factory only upgrade or if a Ham can do it....
What to do, what to do....
