  41. Re the discussion on HT's at the airport. I have done large amounts of
  42. travel in the past years with BOTH an HT and a handheld scanner and the
  43. only thing that has occured is to be asked to open the briefcase and
  44. show them. I haven't even been asked to turn them on to show they work,
  45. just let them see them lying in the briefcase. This includes such exciting
  46. places as Laguardia (just last week), Kennedy, Ohare, Denver, SFO, LAX,
  47. Seatle, etc. I have, more than once, overheard a new security guard ask
  48. his/her supervisor, "does this person fit the profile?". One could guess
  49. from this that certain people may get hasseled more than others if they
  50. "fit the profile" whatever that is.......

  73. I've used some logging programs before, about 3 different ones (all for PC)
  74. and my personal opinion is that they were all trash.  Oddly enough the one
  75. I thought worked best was written in BASIC by a non-programmer in one evening
  76. as just a "quickie".  Still I think I could do a lot better.  Typical problems
  77. with these programs are lack of ability to cancel and abort things that get
  78. started, inability to change what's been typed in, and slow disk i/o and dup
  79. lookups.  If I can get a clear idea of what other people would like a logging
  80. program to do, I might try writing one.  If I do, it will be freeware.  If
  81. you want to tell me what you would like in one, start from the beginning;
  82. don't say what you would like added to one.  How should it work?  What info
  83. should it keep?  What user interface does it need?

  97. The long, noisy squelch-tail of the Icom IC-28 (A or H model) 2-meter 
  98. transceiver can be shortened by replacing C110 (4.7 uf) with a smaller 
  99. value (0.1 to 0.47 uf).  (I can't remember the source of this 
  100. information.)
  101.  
  102. I put a 0.33 uf in my IC-28H; it's a very worthwhile modification.
  103.  
  104. The capacitor is on the bottom board (the one with the lithium 
  105. battery), just southeast of IC4 as you face the front of the upside-
  106. down radio.  The only difficult part is finding the right p-c pads to 
  107. desolder on the back of the board.
  108.  
  109. To remove the board:  Remove bottom plate, unplug speaker.  Unplug 
  110. coaxial antenna connector (gray wire).  Other connectors may remain in 
  111. place.  Remove 5 mounting screws, one in each corner and one near 
  112. center.  Tilt the board out of the radio.  The button in the upper 
  113. left corner is CPU reset; you may have to reprogram the memories if it 
  114. is pressed.  Remember that, although the radio is off, parts of the 
  115. circuit are still "hot" because of the memory-backup battery, so be 
  116. careful not to short any part of the board during the modification.

  130. I'm considering purchasing the Kenwood RZ-1 mobile receiver, which I
  131. read about in the 1989 World Radio TV Handbook.  My main interest is
  132. in FM and TV audio broadcast reception in my car, which is difficult
  133. in the Bay Area due to the hilly terrain.  I would also used it for
  134. shortwave listening, and a perhaps a little bit of police band
  135. monitoring (like when the next big one hits!).  Does anyone have any
  136. personal experience with this unit, or knowledge of other reviews that
  137. have been published?  Does anyone know of any competing units, or
  138. whether Kenwood has a follow-on product planned?

  153. Heard today on the K1MAN "broadcast" on 14275, Glen read the letter, yes
  154. the same exact letter as appeared here.  He also gave his response.
  155. Apparently Glen was one of the "elite" selected few to receive the
  156. original, and the SASE from the FCC.

  158. Glen's reply was awfully self serving, I thought.  From people dumping
  159. comments on top of him, there were others who were not overly impressed.

  198. Norm Strong asks for recommendations on SW radios under $200 and is
  199. constantly referred to the Sony 2010.  It really is worth saving for;
  200. an even better feature that is not found on ANY other receiver is this 
  201. ECSS mode that permits better reception-don't ask me to explain it, I'm
  202. only a librarian!!  Anyway, there was one recommendation for the Magnavox
  203. 2935 that has been discontinued by the manufacturer; EEB's price was quoted
  204. but this model is carried by Sears and I've seen it in Erie for $178.  Good
  205. sound.  This new Panasonic RFB-65 sounds good and I think you can find it
  206. for $200, but I may be wrong, which is often, but at least I try and look
  207. good, which is not bad, considering...done!

  218. Here is the latest information on the upgrade for the Kenwood TM721A / 621A...
  219.  
  220. The upgrade is only for the display and will not add any of the new
  221. features found on the TM-731A / TM-631A radios. It will also not add the
  222. ability to use the RC-20. (This is interesting to note since they also
  223. now tell me (Kenwood service that is) that they do not recommend the 
  224. RC-20 on the TM-731A/631A, since all functions are not available).

  226. The price is supposed to be less than $100.00 and it is even money if it will
  227. be factory only upgrade or if a Ham can do it....
