  19. I remembered this discussion from before, so last time that I was on a
  20. commercial flight, I brought home a copy of the "Inflight Entertainment
  21. & Information Guide."  Here is what United Airlines thinks about
  22. electronic equipment:

  24.     Televisions, AM/FM radios, portable cellular telephones, remote
  25.     control toys, and similar electronic devices must not be used
  26.     on board because they may interfere with communications and
  27.     navigations [sic] systems.
  28.  
  29. No mention of computers, and I sure do see a lot of laptops in use on
  30. flights.

  40. I'm sure there are a number of you out there who, like me, tend to prefer
  41. the basic crystal oscillator/VFO style of radio that preceeded the synthesized
  42. lot that makes up 95% of the market today. I'm looking for a replacement
  43. for my Kenwood TS-140, and I'd like to get some input on what radios, new
  44. and used, you think offer the best performance. In new there's not much
  45. aside from the Ten-Tec Corsair and (sort of) new Omni, but a few years ago
  46. *everything* was this way.
  47.  
  48. My own favorite of recent years was my ("why did I sell it?") Swan 102. I'm
  49. currently on the lookout for something like a 103, or perhaps a recent
  50. Ten-Tec, but before I jump I'd like to get input from the experts out there.
  51. What non-synthesized radios have you owned? What were the plusses and minuses
  52. of each? How user serviceable were they? Send me your comments direct, and 
  53. I'll summarize to the net.

  70.      Have any of you had experience with the $350-400 oscilloscopes
  71. sold under name like "elenco" and so on?  They are dual trace 20MHz scopes
  72. that look okay from the ad.  Heathkit now has a version (assembled) for
  73. about the same price.  The ads are in the back of ham and radio mags.  One
  74. source is "C & S Sales".  Any comment

  294. If you are expecting cards, fine.  If you are sending an envelope 
  295. "just in case", DON'T DO IT!  I, as a sorter, do NOT want envelopes
  296. from every N4TOM, D1CK, and H4RRy.  That leads to storage problems
  297. and makes sorting much slower.  Only if you are expecting cards, please!

  317. the weight of the envelope plus cards equals the postage on
  318. the envelope.  If you want to get cards often (like me, I have
  319. NO patience), you put 25 cents postage on the envelope (good for
  320. 5-6 QSL cards).  If you aren't impatient, you put on more.  (I have
  321. several envelopes with several $$ postage.  They may take a long
  322. time to fill and get mailed.)

  343. The FCC Forum at the Houston Com-Vention this last weekend was run by
  344. the local FCC field people.

  346. They knew about a letter that the FCC sent to several people influential
  347. in the situation. They said it was genuine.

  357. They did say that their opinion was that using ham radio for supporting
  358. the missionaries (the specific example used was "We need more bread out
  359. here") in the manner of the IMRA net, and that using ham radio to run
  360. phone patches to avoid telephone toll charges in the manner of the MM
  361. Net, were both illegal. They went on to say that they'd hoped that the
  362. hams would settle the issue themselves, but it looked like FCC action -
  363. which they expected to include a ban on international third-party
  364. traffic - would be needed.

  389. Looks to me as if ham radio is fast changing (has already changed?)
  390. from a hobby plus real reasons for being (service to charitable
  391. organizations, forefront of technology, relaying across the USA,
  392. etc.) to JUST a hobby.

  394. I'm assuming no one thinks we should wish for more emergencies, but
  395. how long, now, before someone concludes that the relaxation of normal
  396. rules during emergency operation is no longer justified because all
  397. organizations normally served during disasters, etc., should have
  398. planned better for their own exigencies?

  415.  I am looking for a  chip  or discrete circuit that I could use to
  416. invert the video(and sync) from the video output of a vcr to the
  417. video input of a (wireless/uhfch14) 'rabbit' device.
  418. and at the other end  re-invert it between the 2nd vcr & the monitor.

  420. My neighbors have mentioned to me that they are receiving a channel 14
  421. some nights :-) ... well ... Maybe I don't want them to know what movies
  422. I watch ;-) :-)

  424. I'd prefer a chip that don't need too much  support  circuitry, but a 
  425. simple discrete circuit would be just as good.   I'm not picky ! :-)

  427. I checked an  'RCA' 'SK'  cross reference book , but didn't see anything 
  428. close... how about it? anyone have a GTE/Sylvania  Motorola or other
  429. cross ref books to see if they carry anything?
