HR PROPAGATION FORECAST BULLETIN NR 2 ARLP002
FROM ARRL HEADQUARTERS
NEWINGTON CT JANUARY 9, 1989
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
UNTIL RECENTLY SOLAR CYCLE 22 SEEMED TO BE RUNNING BEHIND ITS
PREDECESSOR, UNTIL THE SOLAR FLUX SHOT UP RAPIDLY IN THE MIDDLE OF
DECEMBER. IN A WEEK THE FLUX WAS UP TO 250, A NEW CYCLE 22 RECORD.
THEN THERE WAS ONLY A SLIGHT UP AND DOWN MOVEMENT UNTIL DECEMBER 22,
WHEN THE FLUX DROPPED TO 201, BY THE 26TH, AND A LOW OF 180 BY THE
30TH. THIS LOOKED LIKE A RESTING POINT, BUT THEN CAME A BIGGER
SURPRISE. STARTING UPWARD SLOWLY THE FLUX RISE TOOK ON SPEED AND BY
JANUARY 8TH AS THIS BULLETIN WAS BEING PREPARED IT SHOT UP TO 268,
ITS HIGHEST SINCE DECEMBER 1981.
ALL THIS DOES NOT GUARANTEE CONTINUOUS FINE PROPAGATION ON ALL
FREQUENCIES AND ALL COMMUNICATIONS CIRCUITS HOWEVER. SUDDEN LARGE
CHANGES IN SOLAR ACTIVITY AS IN RECENT DAYS CAN CAUSE SURGES IN THE
EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF HIGH LATITUDE
COMMUNICATION ENTIRELY. TRANSEQUATORIAL PATHS AND LOW LATITUDE EAST
WEST CIRCUITS MAY HAVE ABOVE NORMAL SIGNALS. MAGNETIC DISTURBANCES
MAY BRING ON AURORAL ACTIVITY IN THE HIGHER LATITUDES. THIS MAY WIPE
OUT THE LOWER AMATEUR FREQUENCIES BUT 28, 50 AND 144 MHZ EOQ1PY
BE SCATTERED IN THE AURORAL REGIONS. MULTIPATH EFCECTS SEVERELY
DISTORT ANY WIDEBAND SIGNALS BUT CW CAN BE USED EFFECTIVELY, OFTEN
OVER SURPRISING DISTANCES. SINGLE SIDEBAND IS MORE INTELLIGIBL THAN
OTHER VOICE MODES, BUT CW IS MOST EFFECTIVE. AURORAL DX IS LESS
COMMON IN THE LOW YEARS OF THE SOLAR CYCLE, BUT THE BEST YEARS FOR
THIS MODE ARE HERE AGAIN. INTEREST IN 50 MHZ DX IS REACHING HIGH
LEVELS ALL OVER THE WORLD. LISTEN ON OR NEAR 28.885 MHZ FOR 6 METER
DX INFORMATION.
AMERICAN SUNSPOT NUMBERS FOR DECEMBER 29 THROUGH JANUARY 4 WERE
BETWEEN 123 AND 198 WITH A MEAN OF 156 AR
COPIED FROM W1AW BY RALPH, W7DIB @ WA7HRA
