  16. MicroSat "Logo" Ideas Being Solicted For A New AMSAT-NA Patch
  17.  
  18. AMSAT-NA is solicting ideas for the design of a "logo" for the four new
  19. MicroSats which will be launched this summer on a Ariane rocket.  The
  20. new "logo" will be then turned into a beautiful patch which can be
  21. affixed to hats, windbreakers, etc.  If your idea is picked, it is
  22. possible that it may also become part of the decal which will be
  23. affixed to the side of the Ariane rocket. It is being planned that the
  24. new patch will be ready by the Dayton Hamfest.  Submit your ideas for
  25. the MicroSat "logo" to John Champa, K8OCL, AMSAT-NA Executive VP, 7800
  26. Hartwell St., Dearborn, MI, 48126.  The final choice will be made by
  27. the AMSAT-NA Board of Directors.  The deadline will be March 15, 1989.

  29. it literally fly into space!

  41. OSCAR satellite enthusiasts are reminded that the new AMSAT
  42. "Novice/Technican" Net commences this weekend on Sunday, Febuary 12th,
  43. at 19:00 UTC on a frequency of 28.460 MHz.  This weekly Net will have
  44. as its NCS Vinnie Banville, WB2YGA.  This Net is being "geared" towards
  45. beginners and is intened to be tuitorial in nature.  If you know a
  46. novice or a technican class licensee who is interested in OSCAR
  47. satellites, please inform them about this Sunday afternoon Net.

  85. MIR UPDATE:
  86.  
  87. The Unmanned space freighter Progress-39 was undocked form 
  88. the MIR space station at 09:46 Moscow time on Tuesday.  The
  89. Space Freighter will be put on a descent trajectory on 
  90. Tuesday evening and then reenter the dense layers of the
  91. Atmosphere and cease to exist.   This usually happens over
  92. the West coast of the USA so watch  for reports of the
  93. deorbiting of Progress-39 this evening.

  97. MORE HF PACKET IN LESOTHO:

  99. Thanks to all those who responded to HF packet project announcement in
  100. Sudan. Start-up still pending and all will be notified when further
  101. details available. Following is announcement of another project in
  102. Lesotho (southern Africa). All those who responded for Sudan will
  103. also be considered for this assignment, unless I am notified to

  107. Re Lesotho assignment:  Looking for someone with both radio
  108. (voice, packet, RTTY, AMTOR, VHF, HF, space) expertise and
  109. appropriate computer expertise.  Someone with
  110. personality/capability to sensitive/train both operators and
  111. users of system experimenting with various communcation modes.
  112. Someone interested in the technology, its application and
  113. development issues.  Someone interested in assignment more from
  114. personal/professional/development perspective rather than purely
  115. consultancy/contract/financial perspective.  Individual would:
  116. facilitate installation of equipment both at telecom in Maseru
  117. and user sites in Maseru and rural areas; train operators;
  118. acquire and bring appropriate reference material for project;
  119. participate actively in initial training/sensitization/project
  120. design workshop; assist in design of evaluation strategy; and
  121. travel to Lesotho for a period of 2-4 weeks (flexible - a second
  122. visit 12-18 months later might be necessary/appropriate).   I
  123. hope this information facilitates the identification of an
  124. appropriate individual.  I am also checking
  125. within the Canadian amateur community. Best rgds.

  127. HELP! US SUPPLIERS FOR UOSAT BITS:

  129. I am preparing the late late edits for an article about UoSAT
  130. for the special issue of 73 Magazine, and wanted to list some
  131. US suppliers of such things as the G3RUH UoSAT modem and the
  132. UoSAT Data booklets.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

  134. I was also wondering which TNCs have the ability to copy
  135. straight through Bell-202 asynchronous (e.g. UoSAT) data?  I
  136. remember that someone had done this recently.

  140. NO-CODE; AN OPEN LETTER FROM W2RS
  141.  
  142. I posted the following to our local packet BBS in response to some
  143. misinformed "hate mail" about NoCode that has been appearing there:
  144.  
  145.           An Open Letter to "The Committee to Fight No-Code"
  146.  
  147. Gentlemen:
  148.  
  149.     Since I am not a director of AMSAT, I did not vote on its proposal
  150. for a code-free UHF license.  However, I am an officer of AMSAT and
  151. was present at the meeting when the matter was considered.  In the
  152. belief that you may have been misinformed about what we are and are
  153. not proposing, please allow me to help separate fact from fiction.
  154.  
  155.     What AMSAT is proposing is a new class of Amateur license which
  156. would allow operation only in the bands above 220 MHz.  There would be
  157. no Morse Code requirement, but there would be a written test
  158. consisting of the present Technician Class exam plus a new element
  159. covering Amateur satellite, digital and microwave techniques.  The
  160. hope is that Amateur Radio can thus attract technically qualified
  161. newcomers to increase our occupancy of portions of the spectrum which
  162. are currently underutilized and thus in danger of being reallocated to
  163. other services as in the recent 220-222 MHz case.
  164.  
  165.     AMSAT satellites have been used by foreign no-code Amateurs since
  166. AMSAT-Oscar 6 in 1972.  With the single exception of Japan, we have
  167. found no difference in operating ability or ethics between satellite
  168. users who have passed code tests and those who have not, other than
  169. the use of CW.  Listen to AMSAT-Oscar 10 or AMSAT-Oscar 13 and judge
  170. for yourself.  Our proposed examination would require more knowledge
  171. than the tests which most of these people took.
  172.  
  173.     Japan is a unique case.  A Fourth Class license may be obtained
  174. through the JARL by anyone, without a code test, who passes a simple
  175. Novice-type written exam. Most of these licensees use 2-meter FM.  As
  176. one might expect, problems of undisciplined operation are very common.
  177. That is one reason why AMSAT is NOT supporting a Japanese-type license
  178. in the United States.
  179.  
  180.     Once again, let me say that AMSAT's proposal would not allow
  181. 2-meter privileges to no-code licensees.  The written test which we
  182. are suggesting would be more difficult than that required of VHF/UHF
  183. licensees in most European countries.
  184.  
  185.     On a more personal note, I simply do not understand, and do not
  186. accept, any inference that AMSAT as an organization, or I as an
  187. officer of AMSAT, might have a "conflict of interest" in this matter.
  188. AMSAT is a not-for-profit organization all of whose income goes to
  189. build and operate satellites, develop technology and inform users
  190. about them, entirely for the benefit of Amateur Radio.  Whether or not
  191. you or any Amateurs choose to make use of these services is up to you;
  192. I hope you do and would be happy to see you as active participants in
  193. AMSAT.  However, please do not make your decisions for reasons which
  194. are not factually correct.  Incidentally, since its founding 20 years
  195. ago AMSAT has fully supported the ARRL. The AMSAT Board, at its recent
  196. meeting, unanimously reiterated that position and stated specifically
  197. that AMSAT does not wish to be associated with NARA.

  199.     I hope that this letter has been helpful to you in developing your
  200. views on this important matter affecting all of us as dedicated
  201. Amateurs.

  208. OSCAR 13 MODE S:
  209.  
  210. Gentleman,
  211. sorry for the delay in the Mode-S operation this period.
  212. Due to further experiments with the RUDAK device, it is
  213. currently not possible to run Mode-S at the same time
  214. together with the RUDAK test software. It is expected that
  215. the Mode-S transponder (beacon only) will be switched on
  216. within the next 2 weeks after finishing RUDAK experiments.
  217. So far, no success with RUDAK. Although, there is a little
  218. hope since another device which failed since launch, the
  219. BCR-in current sensor, returned to operation last month.

  225. OPERATION FROM MIR:
  226.  
  227. During this morning's SA AMSAT net (Sunday 09h00 UTC) 
  228. several stations reported having worked U4MIR.
  229. Z21EK in Harare reported that he had a QSO with MIR. The 
  230. contact took place on Tuesday February 7 at 19h54 UTC on 
  231. 145,650 MHz. 
  232. 145,650 is a very busy repeater frequency and far from ideal 
  233. for space communication.
  234. ZS2DD in Port Elizabeth  reported that he worked U4MIR on 
  235. Saturday evening at 19h44 UTC (Feb 11) on 145,550 simplex. 
  236. A Johannesburg station reported that he heard U4MIR calling 
  237. on 145,550 MHz at 19h15 UTC.

  239. Now that the news is out that MIR is active again we expect 
  240. many stations to be calling MIR.

  244. U4MIR COMES TO LIFE:
  245.  
  246.     Stations around the world have been reporting hearing and working
  247. U4MIR.  According to Hans, ZS6AKV, stations in southern Africa worked
  248. the new MIR station as early as Thursday, Feb. 9.  Pat, G3IOR,
  249. worked U4MIR on Friday the 10th.  By Saturday, Feb. 11, many stations
  250. in eastern Canada and in Europe were reporting contacts, including
  251. Bill, VE3EFX, and his XYL VE3HIR.  W2RS had one at 1938 UTC on Sunday,
  252. Feb. 12, and another the same day at 2113 UTC.

  254.     VE3EFX reports that the new operator's name is Alexander.  His
  255. English is quite poor and he does seem to be having some trouble with
  256. call signs.  But he is trying, so please speak slowly and distinctly,
  257. sticking to standard ICAO phonetics.  Most of these contacts,
  258. including that of W2RS, were made on 145.550 simplex.  Alexander also
  259. seems to be using 145.650 as a secondary frequency; several simplex
  260. contacts were made there as well.  So far at least, Alexander seems to
  261. be keeping the same general hours as did Musa, U2MIR, in that most
  262. contacts are being made at about 1900 UTC or later, in the period
  263. between the cosmonauts' dinner hour and lights-out.  Mir's operations
  264. schedule is on Moscow time, which is three hours ahead of UTC.

  266.     Pat, G3IOR, reports that a new crew will be going up in April, and
  267. is receiving Amateur Radio instruction on the ground.  We look forward
  268. to more Amateur operation from the spacecraft as time goes on.  No new
  269. QSL information has been received, so until further notice cards
  270. should probably still go via Boris Stepanov, UW3AX, P.O. Box 679,
  271. Moscow 107207, USSR.
