Introduction to NAPLPS Software
The North American Presentation-Level-Protocol Syntax (NAPLPS)
is a videotex system which can be used to converts a text file
composed of graphics commands into a very compact binary file
which can be over a telephone line or packet radio to another
computer where the NAPLPS binary file is decoded into a NAPLPS
graphics image on another monitor. The principal advantages of
NAPLPS are very small size of NAPLPS picture files and its easy
adaptability to a wide variety of graphics standards. More
information on NAPLPS can be found in the February, March and
July 1983 issues of BYTE.
Several programs for making, transferring and decoding NAPLPS
files which run on the IBM PC compatibles written by amateur
radio operators and ASCII net members in Japan are presented
here, along with an english language translation of sections of
the japanese documentation relevant to the IBM-PC.
This package of NAPLPS software and NAPLPS picture files from
Japan, along with english translations of relevant portions of
the japanese language documentation may be used and distributed
free of charge. The Japanese authors of these programs have
released them to the public on the condition that they not be
used commercially or sold for profit.
Read NAPLPS.DOC in NALPVIEW.ZIP first. The first few pages
introduces NAPLPS and explains how to view the NAPLPS
pictures from Japan.
This release of NAPLPS software consists of the NAPLPS mouse-
driven graphics editor, NEDIT142.EXE in NALPEDIT.ZIP;
NALPVIEW.ZIP which contains NEWNAP.EXE with IBM-PC overlay
module for viewing NAPLPS data files and NAPLPS.DOC, an
overview of these NAPLPS programs; NALPMAKE.ZIP containing two
programs for making NAPLPS text command files and for making
NAPLPS data from NAPLPS text command files; NALPFOR.ZIP which
contains programs for encoding, transferring and decoding
NAPLPS binary data files; and finally NALPPIC1.ZIP,
NALPPIC2.ZIP and NALPPIC3.ZIP which are NAPLPS data files made
by japanese hams and members of the ASCII-NET, a computer
network.
The mouse-driven NEDIT program in NALPEDIT.ZIP does not have a
driver written for IBM PC graphics. A IBM PC graphics driver
for NEWNAP.EXE along with its assembler code is provided; I am
providing it in the hope that someone will write a driver for
IBM or Hercules graphics for this very useful program.
If your monitor displays only Hercules Monochrome graphics, you
will find that your screen won't display the CGA output of this
program. You may be able to use a color TV or a cheap black and
white monitor instead. You could use HGCIB201.ZIP, or another
CGA software emulator for Hercules graphics, to display the
NAPLPS picture on your Hercules TTL monitor. HGCIB201.ZIP is
available on the Virginia Connection landline BBS (703) 648-
1841 and on many other BBSs.
