If you are new to LAN-LINK, don't be scared off by the size of
the program and the manual. LAN-LINK is built in a top down
structured manner. You can go into it as deep as you need. Begin
by using the QUICK MENU which gives you the most commonly used
features in one menu. Then, as you become familiar with LAN-LINK,
start to explore the other menus.
Before you operate for the first time, bring up LAN-LINK and use
the options in the Parameter Menu to configure LAN-LINK to your
station and way of operating. AS A MINIMUM, CHANGE THE
CALLSIGNS. Read Section 18 of the documentation to see what the
customization is capable of. Update/Save the configuration file
when finished.
LAN-LINK uses HARDWARE Handshaking between the PC and the TNC,
you must have the cable wired correctly. A cable with three
signal wires will not work correctly. If you insist on using a 3
wire cable, you must set the DCD Flag (in the Parameter Menu) to
OFF.
LAN-LINK FILES
LAN-LINK.EXE The program, run it.
LAN-LINK.DOC The Documentation file.
KAM.SYS Configuration file for KAM.
KPC.SYS Configuration file for KPC-2.
LAN-LINK.SYS Configuration file (default )for PK232.
MFJ1278.SYS Configuration file for MFJ1278.
TNC1.SYS Configuration file for TNC1.
TNC2.SYS Configuration file for TNC2.
YAPP CNF Configuration file for YAPP (use in YAPP).

APPNOTES.002 LAN-LINK Application Note on Connecting to others
APPNOTES.003 LAN-LINK Application Note on Flow Control
BEGINNER.BBS Reprint of an article describing the features on, and
how to use a packet BBS.
If you don't have a PK232, rename LAN-LINK.SYS to PK232.SYS, then
rename your TNC.SYS file to LAN-LINK.SYS and configure it.
For example, if you are using a KAM,
rename LAN-LINK.SYS to PK232.SYS, then
rename KAM.SYS to LAN-LINK.SYS.
LAN-LINK will run unconfigured, but please configure the
callsigns at least.
Print or view the documenation file to find out more about LAN-
LINK.
READ THE DOCUMENTATION FILE.
Update Notes
If you are UPDATING from an earlier than 1.56 version of LAN-LINK
or any PK232COM, the Configuration files are not compatible to
that needed for 1.58. You must use the Configuration file(s)
supplied on this disk.
If you are updating from 1.56 or 1.57, there are no additions to
the LAN-LINK.SYS files so you can use your existing one, if you
note the following changes. However, just to be on the safe
side, use the new SYS files, unless you are confident that you
can make these changes.
a. The position of the Incoming Window color has been changed.
Bring up the Parameter Menu and change it. It has been moved
to where the LogPage window colour was. Its original position
is now a spare.
b. The log files have been changed to dBASE 3 format.
c. The capture-to-disk file name in the SYS file is ignored. Do
not delete it.
d. The number of default users has been inserted where the
Incoming Window color used to be.
Bringing up 1.58 for 1.56 Users
Basically you have to change the Inwindow color and the names of
the log files, the numebr of default users (perhaps), import your
logfiles and delete the old logs.
1. Copy the two DBF files into your LAN-LINK directory.
2. Copy LAN-LINK.EXE into your LAN-LINK directory.
3 If you want to use the new SYS file(s) copy the one(s) you
will need into your LAN-LINK directory.
4. Load the new version of LAN-LINK.
5. If you are using the 1.56 SYS file, do steps 6 through 9,
else skip to step 8.
6. Edit the SYS file to change the HF and VHF log names to
HF.DBF and VHF.DBF respectively BEFORE you connect to
someone.
7. In the Parameters Menu, bring up the LAN-LINK Parameters and
change the default users to 1. Then set the Incoming Window
color.
8. Update the SYS file.
9. Select the VHF packet communications mode.
10. Bring up the Log Window (Esc L). As the logbook file is empty
LAN-LINK comes up in the Append mode and will ask you to
enter something.
11. Push the "Esc" key to return to the log display.
12. Push the "Alt-U" function key to mark the entry for deletion.
13. Push the "Esc" key to bring up the menu again.
14. Select the "Import" option and import your VHF log.
15. Push the "Home" key to goto the first entry.
16. Push the "Alt-Z" key to pack the log and delete the first
entry.
17. If you are using a TNC which has HF capability (KAM, PK-232
or MFJ1278), select any HF Communications mode.
18. Repeat steps 10 through 16, importing your HF log.
19. At your leisure, delete the old log (*.LOG) files.
If you push any unused function key, you will get a function key
log menu.
