Quick notes on NA v4.23
* During testing of version 4.20, a bug was discovered in NA where attempting
to edit the band of a previous NA Sprint QSO would cause the program to
crash. With further checking, we found that the problem first appeared in
version 4.13, and was still present in version 4.14. This bug has been fixed
in 4.20, but be advised 4.13 or 4.14 should not be used in the Sprints (this
bug will not cause a crash in the other supported contests).
* When you edit a prior QSO, NA must rescore all succeeding QSOs to reflect
the consequences of the edit (revise dupes, mults, etc.). With VERY large
log files, this rescoring can take some time. For example, editing QSO #1
in a 1900+ log file takes around 15 seconds on a 20 MHz 386 machine using
version 4.13 and later, and longer on slower machines. You should keep this
in mind if you are going to do extensive prior edits on large log files real-
time during a contest. I stand in admiration at how fast K1EA's CT rescores
the log as the result of an edit, and one of my goals for NA is to improve
its performance in this area.
* PLEASE NOTE!
NA is starting to see wide usage, as lots of guys are asking for disks.
This is good, but leads to problems such as no postage, bad disks, etc.
These problems are minor in small doses, but are starting to be a big
headache here. I once received a disk (which was defective) in a disk
mailer with no return label or postage!
It has become obvious that a better way of distributing NA is needed. The
program obviously fills a need, as evidenced by the requests for disks.
The effort required to turn around disks in a timely manner has taken me
away from other things, such as my own, growing station, NCJ Contest Aerials
column, and all the other non-radio things that keep our lives balanced.
The time has come for change.
As of March 1, 1990, the distribution of the NA program will be handled by:
LTA Industries, Inc.
Box 92
Canfield, OH 44406
(216) 533-0087
For those who don't know, LTA Industries is run by a successful contester,
Tim Duffy, K3LR. Tim has been an enthusiastic NA user for some time, and
his company will be able to give NA proper support. He has the people and
systems in place to turn disks around in a hurry, track users for updates,
and write some decent documentation. K8CC still retains the rights to NA,
and will continue to support the code with improvments and updates.
NA Version 4.23 will be the last version distributed directly from K8CC.
After March 1, all NA disk requests received here will be forwarded to LTA.
As of that date, LTA will begin distributing Version 4.30, which will be
functionally equivalent to 4.23, except it will contain their name as well
as mine. With Version 4.30, NA will no longer be a freebee, but will cost
$20. For that price, the buyer receives a program disk post-paid with
typeset documentation, and becomes a registered user in the LTA database,
informed of revisions and updates as they occur.
Note that this change in the distribution path does not signal a change in
our (meaning mine) attitude towards the NA program. It is mainly an effort
to better support/distribute it. K1EA's CT eventually became popular enough
that Ken assigned the rights for it to the Yankee Clipper Contest Club, and
they handle its distribution/documentation. Its the same with NA & LTA.
At the current prices, neither K1EA/YCCC nor K8CC/LTA will get rich, but the
service to the contest community is improved.
* COMING ATTRACTIONS
It is the intent of K8CC/LTA to release the next major revision of NA at
the Dayton Hamvention in April 1990. Version 5.0 is anticipated to have
the following new features based upon user requests:
- Improved rescore speed
- CW sending support for COM3/COM4, and also LPT1/LPT2 using the K1EA
compatible interface scheme
- Auto-bandswitching support for radios with and without RS232 interfaces
- Capacity for more QSOs
- Support for the ARRL official log file specification for entry submittal
- ARRL Field Day support
As always, your comments are appreciated.
