  1.                                    PRINTING
  2.  
  3.     There are three basic modes for printing with PC-TYPE+:
  4.  
  5.     (1) Printing the current file you are editing -
  6.  
  7.         In this mode, while the file is being printed, the characters are
  8.         displayed on the screen AS THEY ARE BEING SENT.  You cannot do any
  9.         normal editing functions while in this mode.  You may abort the
  10.         printing process by pressing Ctrl\.
  11.  
  12.     (2) Printing a file which resides on disk -
  13.  
  14.         In this mode, while the file is being printed, you may continue
  15.         your normal editing session.  Everything is normal except that you
  16.         will not be able to change defaults.  You may abort the printing
  17.         process by pressing Ctrl\.  PC-TYPE+ will inform you when the
  18.         printing is completed.

  23.     (3) Printing a file without actually being inside PC-TYPE+.  This mode
  24.         is similar to mode (1) above, except that you specify /PRINT in
  25.         the command you issue to DOS when calling PC-TYPE+.  This mode is
  26.         included so that you may print files from Batch files.

  29.         In modes (1) and (2) above, you will always enter the "PRINT
  30.         OPTIONS" panel described below.  In mode (3), you will not enter
  31.         this panel unless additional information is needed.  All print
  32.         options will normally be picked up from the defaults.

  34.         A sample command for mode (3) would be to type

  36.                           pctype /print sample.file

  38.         after the DOS prompt.
  39.                               Press the PgDn Key

  41.                            The PRINT OPTIONS Panel
  42.  
  43.     You may get to the PRINT OPTIONS Panel in two ways:
  44.     (1) Press Shift F3
  45.     (2) Go to the Command Line - type "PRINT" - and press the Enter key.

  47.     Press Shift F3, and then press Esc.
  48.  
  49.     Most of the time you will make very few changes, if any, to the
  50.     screen.  Any changes to the fields on this panel may be set
  51.     permanently through the MODIFY DEFAULTS sub-panel labelled "Printer
  52.     Output Options".  (See HELP file DFLTS_SV).

  54.     When you have filled in any changes to the printing information, and
  55.     you are ready to go, then press the F10 key to commence printing.

  57.     We will discuss briefly each field in the PRINT OPTIONS Panel below.

  63.     The first field on the panel looks as shown below.

  65.       Enter Complete FileSpec of input file to print (Blank = THIS FILE)

  68.     If you are going to print the file you are currently editing, just
  69.     leave this field blank.  If you are going to print a file which
  70.     resides on disk so you can continue your editing while the file is
  71.     being printed, then you should enter the total path and filename,
  72.     e.g.,
  73.                           d:\pctyp2\doc\chapter.one
  74.  
  75.     If you are printing a file from a batch file, then the default for
  76.     this field should be blank.

  79.                               Press the PgDn Key

  81.                              WHERE to SEND OUTPUT
  82.  
  83.     You will normally be sending your printed output to your printer.
  84.     Sometimes, however, it is convenient to print the file to a disk file.
  85.     For example, you may have a printer at work which you want to use for
  86.     printing but you are at home.

  88.     If you want to send the information immediately to the printer, then
  89.     the second field, shown below, should be left blank.  If you want to
  90.     save the printed information to a disk file, then enter the full path
  91.     and filename in this field.

  96.     If you print the file to a disk file, all the printer escape codes
  97.     WILL BE INCLUDED in the file.

  99.                               Press the PgDn Key

  101.                            PRINTING PART of a FILE
  102.  
  103.     If you want to print a few lines or pages, then tab to the first field
  104.     shown below and press the Up or Down arrow to change the "T" displayed
  105.     to a "P" for partial file.  Then Tab to the next field and use the Up
  106.     or Down arrows to define if you want to print by line or by page.

  108.     Based on the line or page selection you make, enter the first line or
  109.     page number in the next field.  If you leave this field blank, then
  110.     printing will start at the beginning of the file.  In the next field
  111.     enter the number of pages or lines to print, or leave it blank to
  112.     print to the end of the file.

  114.              Print Total File or Part of File?  Select "T" or "P":  T
  115.       If Part of File, locate by Line or Page?  Select "L" or "P":  L
  116.                              First Line/Page to print (Blank=Bgn):  0
  117.                     Number of Lines/Pages to print (Blank=To End):  0

  121.                                GENERAL OPTIONS

  123.     If you want to print more than one copy, enter the number you want to
  124.     print in the field:
  125.                       Number of Copies:   1
  126.  
  127.     If you want to Single, Double, or Triple Space, move to the field
  128.     below and press the Up or Down Arrow till you get the selection you
  129.     want.

  132.     If you are feeding sheets in one at a time and you want the printing
  133.     to stop at the end of each page, then move to the field below and
  134.     press the Up or Down Arrow until the word "Yes" appears.

  139.                               Press the PgDn Key

  141.                           "Headers/Footers: On/Off"
  142.  
  143.     The information in the header and footer definitions will be displayed
  144.     if this field is ON, and will not be displayed if this field is turned
  145.     OFF.  However, the number of lines defined for the Header and Footer
  146.     in the "Vertical Print Page Format" sub-panel of MODIFY DEFAULTS
  147.     will always be printed.

  149.     If you defined 6 header lines and 5 footer lines per page, then if you
  150.     turn this field OFF, you will get 6 blank lines at the top of each
  151.     page and 5 blank lines at the bottom.
  152.  
  153.                       "FormFeed at End of Print: Yes/No"
  154.  
  155.     PC-TYPE+ will ALWAYS print the TOTAL page.  If you want an additional
  156.     page ejected when ALL the printing is completed to make it easier to
  157.     tear off, then turn this option ON.

  161.                      "Number Extra Spaces at Left:  0"

  163.       ┌─┬──────────┐  Suppose you had your Margins set at column one

  166.       │ │xxxxxx    │  add "n" extra spaces to each line as shown at the
  167.       │ │          │  left by tabbing to the field above and entering
  168.       │ │          │  the number of extra spaces ("n") you want placed
  169.       │ │          │  at the beginning of each printed line.

  176.     (See the HELP file MAILMERG for details about this option).  Suffice
  177.     it to say here that all the above options apply to Mail-Merge.

  183.     Press Shift F3 and leave the first field blank to print this file.
  184.     You may as well save the printing to a file, it's faster that way, so
  185.     enter some file specification where you have room on a disk in the
  186.     second field.  Then press F10 and watch how PC-TYPE+ will print your
  187.     file.

  190.     NOTE: If the "Number of Copies" option is greater than one, or if the
  191.           Mail Merge Option is ON, then PC-TYPE+ will need some additional
  192.           disk space to store some temporary files.  After you press F10
  193.           and either (or both) of these options are as mentioned, you will
  194.           be asked to supply the disk drive designator where sufficient
  195.           room exists to hold the file being printed before printing will
  196.           begin.
