WF Version 2.0.0 Copyright 1990-92 Mary & Brent Barrett, All Rights Reserved.
WF is a word puzzle game for 1-5 players of all ages. Puzzles may be
one of 7 categories (Miscellaneous, Phrase, Quotation, Title, Thing,
Person/People, or Place). It's fun for the whole family!
* REQUIREMENTS
WF requires an IBM PC, XT, AT or TRUE compatible computer with:
* 256 KB RAM
* EGA or VGA graphics.
* STARTING WF
To run WF, all you need are these files:
WF.DAT The puzzle file (encrypted).
WF.FNT The big letter font.
WF.EXE The program itself.
From the directory where all these files reside, enter "WF" and press
the ENTER key.
WF may also be run with certain command line arguments:
WF Will run WF normally (graphics type is detected).
WF s Will run WF without sound.
WF e Will run WF in EGA mode.
WF v Will run WF in VGA mode.
WF n Will prevent WF from creating the WFTOTAL.TXT file.
WF <1>-<5> Will run WF set for 1 to 5 players.
Command line arguments may be combined, as long as there is a space
between switches (i.e. "WF s h" will force Hercules mode and turn sound
off).
* HOW TO PLAY WF
The rules are quite simple:
1. Each player takes a turn until he:
a. Incorrectly guesses a letter.
b. Passes his turn.
c. Spins "Lose Turn" or "Bankrupt" on the wheel.
d. Solves the puzzle.
If he hasn't solved the puzzle, play goes on to the next player.
2. At the start of a player's turn, he may opt to:
a. Spin the wheel (covered later).
b. Buy a vowel (if he has 500 points or more).
c. Answer the puzzle.
d. Pass his play to the next player.
3. Players may only guess consonants after a wheel spin. Vowels must
be purchased at 500 points per vowel.
4. If only vowels remain in a puzzle, players will not be allowed to
spin, and must Answer, Pass, or Buy a vowel (if they have enough
points).
5. Each consonant in the puzzle matching the player's guess will add
the current wheel value to his total. Vowels do not award any
points (they simply aid in answering the puzzle).
6. A game consists of five rounds of play. At the end of the game,
a winner will be announced by WF, and another game may be played.
* COMMANDS IN WF
In addition to the prompts which ask the player to (A)nswer, (B)uy a
vowel, (P)ass or (S)pin, the following keyboard command keys are active:
Alt - Subtract a player from the game (will not go below 2 or the
current player).
Alt + Add a player to the game (will not go above 5).
Alt 1-5 Change the name of player 1-5.
Alt G Give up. The puzzle will be displayed and a new puzzle will
be selected at random.
Alt N New puzzle. A new puzzle will be selected at random.
Alt R Reset game. Scores will be reset and the game will start again
with a fresh puzzle in round 1.
Alt S Toggle sound.
Alt X Quit the game (at any time).
* TOTALS FILE
WF appends to a file called WFTOTAL.TXT in the same directory as
WF.EXE. This file contains the results of the current game, including
the time and date of the game; and score, time, and keys pressed for
each player.
