I would like to announce that we will soon begin the integration of the
ADE port of GCC into the baseline FSF sources.
This involves plenty of work, since most of the old quick&dirty hacks have
to be rewritten into something acceptable for the FSF maintainers. I've
been doing it for some time and I expect to finish most things by the
end of this month.
I ask all of you who made significant contributions to the AmigaOS port of
GCC to contact me (Kamil Iskra, kiskra@ernie.icslab.agh.edu.pl) privately.
"Significant" contributions are those larger than 10 lines :-). The reason
why you should contact me is that you have to sign copyright assignments
to FSF: this is required by FSF before any code is integrated.
You don't have to hurry since the sources are not yet ready for
integration, but I would appreciate it if all the interested parties
contacted me by the beginning of next week, i. e., by Monday, February the
10th.
Thanks,
/ Kamil Iskra - AMIGA 1200, 68030 50MHz, HDD 1.6 GB, 18 MB RAM \

The Independent Amiga Rejuvenation Survey is now running at:
http://www.skip.adb.gu.se/~gunnar/iars/
Please visit it and submit your views!
I'm also happy to inform you that IARS has received an official recognition
by Phase 5 Digital Products (Cybervision, A\Box etc,). I quote:
"Phase 5 Digital Products appreciates very much the independent efforts of
engaged Amiga
community members to support the planning of the future of the Amiga. The
IARS project
seems to be an excellent means to collect and analyse the views and opinions
of Amiga users
all over the world. We are looking forward to see the results which shall be
compiled in "The
Independent Amiga Rejuvenation White Book", and expect this to be a source
of additional
information and inputs that can support our goal of designing the dream
machine that the
users want. We hope that the IARS project is successful and gets the
response from users
worldwide that it deserves.

I was wanting to get the next ADE snapshot out by now, but a few days
ago I had a major setback. Something caused a major instability in
the ADE binary tree. I backed out some recent changes that I suspect
may have been the cause, and am now running another round of builds.
If this round succeeds in producing a stable tree, then I'll make the
snapshot at that time, probably during the weekend.

The 970217 snapshot of the Amiga Developers Environment is now available for
ftp from ftp.ninemoons.com:pub/ade/current. See the "README" file in the
pub/ade directory for more information about the ADE. See the "Changes"
file for a quick list of some (but not all) of the changes since the last
snapshot.
The complete ftp distribution is approximately 374 Mb (compressed), which
includes original baseline sources (130 Mb), amiga sources (135 Mb), amiga
binaries (100 Mb), and diff files (9 Mb).
When unarchived, the binary tree is approximately 256 Mb, if you install
everything. The source and baseline trees are approximately 600 Mb each
when unarchived.
I would recommend that if you have the diskspace, that you create a new ade
directory, say dh0:ade-new, assign ADE: to it, cd to ADE:, extract all of
the distribution lha files in that directory, and then put back all of your
local changes (if any). That way you can be sure that you are starting with
a clean install. Simply extracting the distribution lha archives on top of
an existing binary tree is NOT advised.
If you sent in patches that were not included in this snapshot, they are
probably still in my TODO patch directory. Please feel free to inquire
about them to make sure they were not overlooked. Over the next 2-3
weeks I will be integrating lots of patches and some new packages, and then
will do another snapshot just prior to cutting the master for the next ADE
CD release.
Have fun!

Subject: Anonymous CVS repository access
To: ADE announcements list <ade-announce@ninemoons.com>
Reply-To: fnf@ninemoons.com
From: fnf@ninemoons.com
Sender: owner-ade-announce@ninemoons.com

Errors-To: postmaster@ninemoons.com
I'm happy to announce that the Geek Gadgets CVS (Concurrent Versions System)
repository is now available for anonymous read-only access. This allows
anyone that wants to participate in the project to keep a local up-to-date
copy of the source to any or all of the Geek Gadgets packages, and to easily
submit bug fixes or enhancements in the form of diff files that are relative
to the current CVS repository contents.
All of the Geek Gadgets source is kept in a centralized repository and
managed by CVS. This allows many developers to work simultaneously on the
source for a particular program without having to "freeze" the source and
thus impede progress by other developers that want to work on the same
sources.
Using remote CVS, a distributed team of cooperating developers can check out
a copy of the source from the repository machine located anywhere on the
internet, make local changes to that source, test those changes, then check
those changes back into the repository. All other developers that have a
copy of that source checked out will have those changes inserted into their
copy automatically the next time they do a CVS "update", and in the rare
case where their changes conflict with the latest repository changes, they
will be notified of the conflict and thus be able to resolve it before
checking in their own changes.
CVS will also arrange to log changes to particular modules (groups of files
which may be one or more programs) in the repository and send notifications
via email to interested developers that want to know about changes to the
modules they are working on. For example, if one of the developers working
on gcc makes a change, all of the other developers which have signed up to
receive notices of gcc changes will receive a notice via email that
typically consists of a copy of the ChangeLog entries for the files that are
affected by the change.
This system also allows "lurking developers", I.E. those that want access to
the latest source simply to build new binaries. Even though they are not
making any changes themselves, they can maintain a complete and up-to-date
source base with a minimal amount of effort, by simply doing a CVS update
every few days. These people are not parasites; they provide a very useful
function by working with the latest source base on a wide variety of
machines with a wide variety of configurations, and can quickly provide
feedback when ill advised changes to the source base cause trouble that the
developers did not catch during their own testing.
As a first step, you may need to get an updated copy of CVS (currently
version 1.9.2) from ftp.ninemoons.com. You can find the baseline source,
the current Geek Gadgets source, preformated Postscript documentation, and
an AmigaOS binary archive in pub/ade/alpha/misc on ftp.ninemoons.com:
-r--r--r-- 1 cronus ftpadm 1872922 Feb 19 01:18 cvs-1.9.2-base.tgz
-r--r--r-- 1 cronus ftpadm 1474666 Feb 19 01:21 cvs-1.9.2-src.tgz
-r--r--r-- 1 cronus ftpadm 293165 Feb 19 01:34 cvs-1.9.2-doc.tgz
-r--r--r-- 1 cronus ftpadm 1016775 Feb 19 01:17 cvs-1.9.2-bin.lha
On a UNIX system you will need to get the cvs-1.9.2-src.tgz archive, unpack
it, configure it, and install it. For AmigaOS, you simply need to run lha
to extract the contents of the cvs-1.9.2-bin.lha archive into your ADE:
directory.
Once you have a current CVS installed, you should set your CVSROOT
environment variable as follows:
setenv CVSROOT :pserver:anonymous@ftp.ninemoons.com:/src/cvsfiles
Then do a cvs login. You only have to do this once.
cvs login
You should get a line that looks like:
CVS password:
Give it anything, including a plain carriage return if you want. Then
if it does not give any errors, check to see if you have a file
$HOME/.cvspass and that its contents are something like:
:pserver:anonymous@ftp.ninemoons.com:/src/cvsfiles A4%^&d)@
The last field is a weakly encryped copy of the password you typed in.
If this all looks good, cd to some empty directory and type:
cvs co modules
That will check out a copy of the CVS repository's "modules" file, which
lists all the aliases for things that you can checkout. For example, "cvs
co gcc" will check out all of gcc. You can also check out specific file
trees by knowing where they live in the ADE tree (per the modules file),
such as "cvs co ade/fsf/gcc".
If all goes well, you should get a copy of whatever you decide to checkout,
and should be able to perform any operations (like "update", "diff", etc)
that don't attempt to write to the repository.
I'm not sure how long the "cvs login" is valid for. I suspect it is valid
for as long as you have the $HOME/.cvspass file and only needs to be done
once, or whenever your password might change.
If you're not already on the ade-cvslog mailing list, you should join it so
you know when things that you have checked out have changed, and can do a
cvs update. You should probably also join the ade-announce mailing list in
case there are subsequent important announcements that affect access to the
repository. Both lists are controlled by majordomo and more information can
be obtained by sending an email message to "majordomo@ninemoons.com" with
the body of the message containing only "help".
If you do your development directly in the checked out cvs source tree, at
any time you can do a "cvs diff -c" to generate a set of diffs to send to me
to apply to the repository to bring the repository in sync with your
changes. After I've checked in the changes, a simple "cvs update" on your
end will bring your checked out tree back in sync with the repository.
It's highly recommended that you try to use separate build and source trees
if you can, but it won't bother CVS if you don't. You just may see a lot of
messages about the files that CVS knows nothing about if you build in the
source tree.
If you have any troubles, please let me know ASAP. It is strongly
recommended that you print off the CVS manual and at least read some of the
introductory portions and the detailed descriptions of the "checkout",
"update", and "diff" commands.

Hello all,
The Web pages have now been updated. I have added compatability for
VoyagerNG and these pages are rendered pretty much perfectly by it.
IBrowse unfortunately cannot render the graphics as they should appear,
but you shouldn't have any problems with a graphics card (with IBrowse) or
VNG.
I have also added a set of pages which use a smaller version (half size)
of the flags for the FTP sites. Could you comment on these? i.e. Whether
they should be small of large or inbetween.
I ask this because they both look perfectly okay on a Sun but the small
flags are better on my Amiga (which does not have a good display mode).
Also, if there is anything that I have missed out, please email me to let
me know. Apart from GDB-GUI which I intend to add.
Thanks,
Luke.
