  1. PC ReadMe File - LAUNCH, No. 11
  2.   
  3. Please read the LAUNCH booklet first, for information on how to install and
  4. use LAUNCH. This ReadMe file contains tips and late breaking information
  5. about LAUNCH that is not included in the booklet.  
  6.  
  7. IMPORTANT NOTE -- 8-bit and 16-bit video
  8. ----------------------------------------
  9. Running Launch in 16-bit color video is highly recommended.
  10.  
  11. Launch can be run in either 8-bit or 16-bit video. Most people have their 
  12. video cards set at 8-bit (256 color). 16-bit (65,536 colors) video offers
  13. better looking full-motion video and images and is offered with most newer
  14. video cards with at least 1MB of memory. 
  15.  
  16. To run in 16-bit color, your video card setting must be set to that color
  17. bit depth. If you are comfortable with changing color bit-depth in Windows, 
  18. try the 16-bit version! The ways to switch color bit-depths vary from 
  19. computer to computer, usually it is a control panel installed along with the
  20. video card. In Windows95, go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings and change
  21. the color palette there.
  22.  
  23. QUICKTIME VR ERROR MESSAGES
  24. ---------------------------
  25. If you get an error message when trying to enter the screens that have QTVR
  26. scenes in them, there may be a conflict with an older version of QTVR on your
  27. system. Please check in your Windows or Windows/System folder for a file 
  28. called QTVR.QTC. Either temporarily rename it or move it to a different 
  29. location. 
  30.  
  31. Performance issue: The QTVR movies may run a bit slow if you have the minimum
  32. 8MB of RAM.
  33.  
  34. INTEGRATED WEB BROWSER
  35. ----------------------
  36. The integrated web browser in Launch requires Windows 95 and an active 
  37. internet connection. Some pages may also be unreadable if you are in 8-bit
  38. color, please select the 16-bit color video mode for better web browsing.
  39.  
  40. If an error message about a missing .dll file appears, please make sure
  41. you have the three fils CTL3D.DLL, CTL3DV2.DLL, CTL3D32.DLL in your
  42. Windows/System directory. If you're missing any of those, copy them
  43. from the Drivers/Winsys directory located on the Launch CD-ROM.
  44.  
  45. JUMPING/SKIPPING AUDIO
  46. ----------------------
  47. in the Quicktime control panel, select the "MORE" button on the bottom and
  48. then the "AUDIO" tab near the top. If there is a setting called "Automatic
  49. Rate Adjustment," turn it off.
  50.  
  51. INSTALLING QUICKTIME(TM)  
  52. ------------------------  
  53. Launch requires the 16-bit version of QuickTime for Windows 2.1.2 (or 
  54. later). If you have the 32-bit version of Quicktime 2.1x installed, that is 
  55. fine, they have been designed to coincide on the same system with no conflicts.
  56.   
  57. When installing QuickTime, the installer program may ask you if you 
  58. want to remove old versions of QuickTime. Go ahead and have the
  59. installer delete these old versions. You must do this for the installation  
  60. to succeed.  
  61.   
  62. In order to run the Quicktime installer, follow these directions:  
  63.   
  64.     * Windows 3.1: Open the CDROM drive in File Manager
  65.       Windows95: Right-click the CDROM drive in My Computer and Explore.  
  66.     * Run the file "qtinstal.exe"  
  67.     * Follow all instructions  
  68.   
  69. Note: A QuickTime for Windows program group will be created on your 
  70. Windows desktop.  The installer will place several files into this group.
  71. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RUN ANY OF THESE FILES IN ORDER TO ACCESS LAUNCH.
  72. These icons are just there as part of the QuickTime installation program and
  73. may be used to run QuickTime movies externally, such as ones that are 
  74. downloaded from the internet.  
  75.   
  76.   
  77. ERROR MESSAGES
  78. --------------
  79. Freeze on "Loading" screen in Launch. If it seems your computer has frozen,
  80. try hitting alt-f4 to exit out of the current application.
  81.  
  82. "There is no Sound Output Device" - In order to run LAUNCH, your computer
  83. needs at least 8-bit sound output capability (16-bit preferred).  If you
  84. have this, make sure that you have the latest Windows Sound Drivers (obtained 
  85. from the manufacturer) installed and configured properly.
  86.  
  87. "QuickTime not installed" - In order to run LAUNCH, you must install 
  88. QuickTime for Windows 2.xx. We have included version 2.1.2 on our CD.
  89. See below details for installation instructions.
  90.  
  91. "General Protection Fault" errors: Re-installing QuickTime for Windows
  92. 2.1.2 from the LAUNCH CD will usually solve this problem.  Make sure you
  93. have the installer remove any previous QuickTime files.
  94.  
  95. *CANON Innova MT Computers and Western Digital Paradise video card users
  96. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  97. If Launch freezes at a black screen when starting up, an updated video
  98. driver for your video card may be necessary. A current driver is provided
  99. in the /drivers/Canon directory on the Launch CD, refer to the readme for
  100. compatiblility details.
  101.  
  102. *GATEWAY 2000/STB video card users
  103. ----------------------------------
  104. If Launch freezes or causes a Windows error upon starting up, Quicktime 
  105. may be having a problem with your current video driver. The solution is 
  106. to change the optimization method in the QTW.INI file to "BMP":
  107.

  111.  
  112. WINDOWS 3.1 USERS
  113. -----------------
  114. Older video drivers may not be compatible with Quicktime. If you have tried
  115. LAUNCH and a General Protection Fault occurs in the video driver, we suggest
  116. trying the generic SuperVGA, 640X480, 256 color driver. If this driver is not
  117. on your system, you can install them off the CD-ROM. Choose Main -> Windows
  118. Setup -> Options -> Change System Settings -> Display, and choose "Have Disk".
  119. For the path, choose the Drivers\SVGA path on the CD-ROM (ex. d:\Drivers\SVGA).

  121.  
  122. WINDOWS95 USERS
  123. ---------------
  124. MULTITASKING - We do not recommend launching other applications while
  125. our program is running.  Our software is very demanding and bad things
  126. may happen if you try this.
  127.  
  128. CD-ROM CACHE - depending on the speed of your CD-ROM drive, an increased
  129. cache may help performance. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Performance ->
  130. File System -> CD-ROM and experiment with the access pattern optimization 
  131. setting.
  132.  
  133. PERFORMANCE ISSUES
  134. ------------------
  135. LAUNCH uses the highest-quality 16-bit audio and video, there may be 
  136. some performance problems on lower end machines. 
  137.  
  138. JUMPY/SKIPPING VIDEO -- in the Quicktime control panel, try experimenting
  139. with the video optimization method, try the "Video Driver" setting if you
  140. are having problems.
  141.  
  142. AUDIO NOTICEABLY OUT-OF-SYNC (ESS sound cards) -- in the Quicktime control 
  143. panel, first try checking the "Auto Rate Adjustment" box in the Audio section 
  144. of the Quicktime control panel. If that is ineffective, try changing the
  145. rate algorithm to "Manual Override", the requested rate to 22050, and then 
  146. experiment with the actual hz (usually 22000-22200). Different sound cards will 
  147. require different rates, refer to the Quicktime readme file for more info.
  148.  
  149.  
  150. REQUIREMENTS  
  151. -------------  
  152.   
  153. Be sure your system has at least:  
  154.   
  155.     * 8 MB of Ram  (16 MB preferred)
  156.   
  157.     * 486 33MHz processor (Pentium preferred)
  158.   
  159.     * 2x CD-ROM drive (4x preferred) 
  160.   
  161.     * Windows 3.1 or Windows 95  
  162.   
  163.     * 16-bit sound card preferably  
  164.   
  165.     * Quicktime 2.1.2 drivers  
  166.   
  167.  
  168. INTERNET CONNECTION/WEB BROWSER
  169. -------------------------------
  170. Our visual bookmark system will work in Windows 95 if you have a web browser
  171. that support internet shortcuts (such as Netscape 2.0 or Microsoft Internet
  172. Explorer 2.0). It also requires that you have an internet connection (in most 
  173. cases, via the TCP/IP protocol). We have not tested connections with commercial 
  174. providers such as America Online or Compuserve. We would be interested in 
  175. hearing if you've been able run it on these services or other web browsers. 
  176.  
  177. BUGS AND OTHER PROBLEMS  
  178. -------------------------  
  179.   
  180. We have worked really hard to make LAUNCH bug-free and easy to use. But 
  181. there may still be some problems that you will encounter. If you are having
  182. problems, first check to see that your computer is set up properly and 
  183. review some of the suggestions in this README file.
  184.   
  185. If you are convinced that everything is OK with your computer, you may have
  186. discovered a bug or design problem. If so, we'd like to hear about it.

  200. Describe the problem in as much detail as you can. Describe where and 
  201. how it happened. Include all the details about your computer too
  202. (e.g. 486 66DX2 GATEWAY Computer Model xxx, a display card, sound  
  203. card, DOS version, Windows version). There are so many different 
  204. combinations of equipment and software, that it's difficult to know what is
  205. going on without all the information describing a system. Your bug report
  206. will help make future issues better.
