- (WB 2.0 and higher returns more info)
- - The requester does not take 230 bytes
- each time it is displayed. ie 230 + 230
- + 230 etc. Fault was with Blitz.
- - Non Dos Disk could not be formated on any
- other drive besides DF0: If a disk was in
- DF0: and you tried to format a Non Dos disk
- in a another drive the program would lock.
- - Trying to Check, Install, Format, Info
- and Quick Format a Non Dos Disk. The program
- allocated some memory for this but would not
- free it.
-
- THE PROGRAM
- DiskMatter's main function is to format disks. It can format
- floppy disks in any of the current formats. DiskMatter can
- also Install & Remove boot blocks. You can also check
- disks to see what Format they are. An Info option
- is also available. This returns Bytes used etc.
-
- Diskmatter can format all of its formats on any type of
- system. Of course you still can't use formats which are
- not compatible with the machine you intend to use the disk
- in.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTE
- All of DiskMatter's Functions with the exception of INFO
- can be used with any version of Workbench.
-
- CONFIGURING DISKMATTER
- By selecting Save Config from the pull down menu you can
- save the current settings of diskmatter. This effects
- the Volume name, Fast File System Etc, and the
- Setup and Auto menus. A file called DiskMatter.Config
- willed be saved to the s directory of the boot disk.
- It is not nessecary to have a config file. The program
- has default setting. You will not have a config file
- the very first time you ever run Diskmatter. If for
- some reason the config file could not be loaded then
- you will be informed of that and a error message
- will be displayed. The error number relates to DOS
- errors mostly.
-
- INFO
- Basically gives you Information about the selected
- Drive & Disk. It returns Bytes on the disk, Bytes used, Etc.
- A Disk must be in the selected Drive. You can not get INFO
- about a Drive only. You can also exit INFO by removing a
- disk from any drive.
-
- VIEW
- Shows the Bootblock in ASCII
- You can also exit the VIEW window by removing a disk
- from any drive.
-
- CHECK
- Used to Check a disk's format. It reports if the
- selected disk is Bootable or not, what operating system
- that the disk was most likely formatted under and the type
- of format of the disk.
-
- There is no difference between a disk formatted as OFS &
- FFS which where formatted using OS 2.x and OS 3.0 and as
- such will always show as being formatted using OS 2.x.
-
- Non - Standard boot Block - this is reported when the
- program looks at the boot block and says to itself "hang
- on a sec this does not look like a normal boot block". It
- is nothing to be concerned about because some disks do not
- have standard boot blocks. These boot blocks could have
- been modified by PD programs (ie a program which displays
- IFF ILBM files using the boot block). Also some commercial
- programs have custom boot blocks. Although if you can not
- be 100% certain about a boot block on a disk then use a
- Virus Checker to check the boot block.
-
- INSTALL
- Installs the boot block on to a disk in the selected
- drive. INSTALL will install a WB 2.x boot block on disk
- formatted under WB 1.3. This makes no difference to the
- disk and boot block. These disks can still be used on WB
- 1.3 systems.
-
- REMOVE
- Removes a Boot Block from a disk in the selected Drive.
-
- WARNING
- Some PD and Commercial disks have non-standard boot blocks.
- You should NEVER Remove or Install these boot blocks. Unless
- you know what you are doing.
- You can by Removing or Installing these types of boot blocks
- make the disk non bootable, ie you can't use it
-
- FORMAT
- Different Formats are set up by clicking in the required
- gadget box. The Volume Name is changed by clicking in the
- V.Name box and typing in the new name. For a full
- description of format types refer to your user manual.
-
- You can stop the FORMAT operation at anytime by clicking
- Cancel or by clicking the right mouse button.
-
- If you select a format which in not suitable to the computer
- you are using then you will be asked to confirm the format.
- (If this has been selected in the menus)
-
- FORMAT-QUICK
- This just formats the Boot & Root blocks. It is basically
- the same as FORMAT. The disk must have already been formatted
- for Format-Quick to work. The disk will be formatted as
- the buttons have been set.
-
- FORMAT BOOTABLE
- If you have selected this when you format a disk that disk
- will have the boot block installed automatically. This
- performs the same function as INSTALL.
-
- VERIFY
- This verifies all commands. It checks that the data on a disk
- is correct. It can be used to check that a Boot Block has
- been Installed or Removed, that Format-Quick has worked,
- and with Format that each track in right. When used with
- FORMAT the formatting of a disk increases in time. It
- can not be used with CHECK, VIEW or with INFO
-
- SELECTING DRIVES
- There are four boxes DF0 -> DF3. To select a drive to
- perform any of the operations on simply click on its
- non-ghosted box.
-
- PULL DOWN MENUS
- The following which is in the Setup menu can be switched
- on or off. All three may be in either state.
- A tick means that that item is on.
-
- CONFIRM SELECTION
- Every time you select an operation you will be asked to confirm
- your selection.
-
- WINDOW ACT FOR AUTO
- ACT means active
- All of DiskMatter's Functions may be started automatically
- when a disk is inserted IN ANY DRIVE.
- If this has been selected then the DiskMatter window must
- be the current window when a disk has been inserted. If
- not selected then it does not matter which is the current
- active window Diskmatter will perform the function
- requested. Refer Below 'AUTO'
- WB 1.3 User note :- Window Act for Auto is ghosted out
- meaning that it is not available to you. DiskMatter will
- perform the functions as if this menu item was not
- selected.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTE : It will only perform the function on
- the drive selected even though you may change disk in a
- different drive.
-
- CONFIRM HIGHER FMAT
- This just switches off the requester informing you that
- you are trying to format a disk which is not suitable
- to the computer you are using.
-
- AUTO MENU
- Only one function may be selected at one time.
- No Auto - nothing happens.
- Select anything else and DiskMatter will do it when a
- disk is inserted in any drive. Refer Window Act for Auto
