  115. Jay Kee of Calgary, Canada, has been promoted to LiveWire's Managing Editor,
  116. and Keith Garrett of Memphis, Tennessee, has become the magazine's Assistant
  117. Editor. These two talented word smiths, in company with Donn King, LiveWire's
  118. long-time Associate Editor and myself and the rest of the staff, are in the
  119. process of making changes to these electronic pages which we believe you'll
  120. find exciting.

  221. good beat and it's easy to dance to. As long as you're talking about computer
  222. hardware, or software, or peripherals. But what if you're not?
  223.   
  224.      What if you're talking about people hardware, software and peripherals?
  225. Like housing and transportation, or leisure and entertainment. What do you do
  226. when you need help deciding what to buy? Or you need troubleshooting advice,
  227. tips on maintenance and repair, or information on new products and services?
  228.   
  229.      Well, do what thousands of people do every day. Turn on your computer.
  230. And log onto GEnie.

  234. \\\ Basic People Hardware   The care and feeding of computers has long been
  235.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  an area of interest for people on GEnie -- not
  236. surprising, really, when you consider that you can't log on without one.

  238.      There are dozens of RoundTables devoted to a melting pot of diverse
  239. computer platforms, with Bulletin Boards, Conferences, and Libraries packed
  240. with advice, information and product support. But there's more to life than
  241. computers. And more to GEnie than computing.

  243.      A quick visit to the GEnie Index at Page 15 (keyword INDEX) reveals just
  244. how much more, and you aren't charged standard connect fees while you're
  245. there.  From that menu you can generate a listing of all GEnie products and
  246. services, arranged alphabetically or by Page Number with either short or long
  247. descriptions. The short description option alone produces several pages of
  248. listings, with literally hundreds of options.

  250.      As you browse through the listings, a couple of things jump out at you.
  251. The sheer number of choices available; and the incredible variety of subjects
  252. and interests they represent -- subjects and interests that have nothing to do
  253. with computers, and everything to do with people.

  255.      It would take a couple of years and several books to cover everything in
  256. that listing. Space and time permit something slightly less ambitious. So
  257. let's start with some basic people hardware -- cars and homes -- and go from
  258. there.

  262. \\\ A Good Roadmap   The Automotive RoundTable at Page 755 (keyword AUTO) is
  263.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  a vast storehouse of information, advice and discussion
  264. dedicated to our love affair with the automobile. It's an affair fraught with
  265. peril, plagued by problems, besieged by frustration; a love-hate relationship
  266. desperately in need of a good roadmap.

  268.      The Automotive RoundTable gives you that map.
  269.   
  270.      Its Bulletin Board contains dozens of Categories and hundreds of Topics
  271. that cover every conceivable possibility on the automotive highway, from
  272. vintage cars to alternative energy vehicles.

  274.      For instance, if you're after some inside information on financing,
  275. credit, insurance, sales tactics and counter-tactics; or looking for solid
  276. advice on the advantages and disadvantages of buying through a broker, find a
  277. parking spot in Category 2, The Car Buying Experience.

  279.      If you're interested in detailed evaluations of the best car values under
  280. $20,000, curious about the relative merit of oil treatments, fuel additives
  281. and synthetics, or just want to catch the GEnie New Car Reviews, pull in at
  282. Category 14, Product and Vehicle Reviews.

  284.      And if the care and feeding of your four-wheeled monster is keeping you
  285. up nights, make a pit stop at Category 3 or 4 -- Ask The Mechanic. Category 3
  286. covers imports; Category 4 deals with domestics. Both offer professional
  287. advice, hints, tips and diagnostic assistance on every make and model, from
  288. Mercedes-Benz and Audi, to Yugo and Lada.

  290.      The Automotive RoundTable is also your GEnie source for the NMA -- the
  291. National Motor Association. You can join from the Main Menu at Page 755 on
  292. option 6, or sign-in if you're already a member using option 7.

  294.      The NMA offers additional support and protection for motorists,
  295. including a bi-monthly newsletter and regular bulletins. And members on GEnie
  296. enjoy access to the private NMA Member's Lounge where special bulletins are
  297. available free.

  301. \\\ Home Is Where the Modem Is   They say home is where the heart is. But
  302.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  it's also where the mortgage is, along with
  303. the plumbing and the wiring, the furnace and the hot water tank, the fence and
  304. the lawn, the maintenance, the repairs, the landlord and the lease.

  306.      Apartment or condo; mansion or bungalow -- whether you're renting or
  307. leasing or just holding it for the bank, Home is where the modem is, on GEnie
  308. at Page 955 (keyword HOME).

  310.      The Home and Real Estate RoundTable is a repository of invaluable
  311. information, resources and support. The Library contains files on financing
  312. and appraising, sales aids and listings, even GIF files of actual properties.
  313. And the Bulletin Board offers timely advice on everything from contracts,
  314. financing and taxes, to construction, landscaping and redecorating.

  316.      Movers and shakers will want to check out the investment opportunities in
  317. Category 11; builders and breakers will find Category 17, Home Building and
  318. Construction, particularly helpful. And everybody will want to pay a visit to
  319. Category 24, Ask the Taxman.

  321.      Buying or selling a home can be a real headache. But you can get fast
  322. relief on things like equity sharing, inspections, closing costs, tax laws and
  323. assumable loans from experts in Categories 5 and 6. If you happen to be an
  324. agent, or if you're looking to buy property in another state, drop in to
  325. Category 9, Home/Real Estate Listings. And if you want to expand your market
  326. of potential buyers, put an ad in Category 12, Anything Goes.

  328.      The Real Estate RoundTable is also the place to go on GEnie to order a
  329. free copy of the Homes & Land Magazine or the Rental Guide Magazine from Homes
  330. & Land Publishing Corporation. These magazines are available throughout most

  336. \\\ The Final Frontier   The hardware's installed: the house is built and the
  337.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  car is running and everything is working fine. What
  338. about peripherals and software?
  339.   
  340.      Take a look at the Index, browse through the listings, and you'll find
  341. all sorts of RoundTables devoted to the support of people peripherals like
  342. dining, travel, entertainment, sports and hobbies. Pick one you like, and go
  343. for it.  Like scuba diving.
  344.   
  345.      Space may be the final frontier, but diving is the first. The Scuba
  346. RoundTable (Page 650, keyword SCUBA) surfaced on GEnie over eight years ago
  347. and has grown to encompass an extensive Library, dozens of Categories and
  348. hundreds of Topics relating to the sport of diving. The information is
  349. current, accurate and relevant, touching on subjects as diverse as cave
  350. diving, night diving, dive physics, dive medicine, treasure hunting, and
  351. underwater navigation.

  366. and exotic dive destinations will rank right up there with winning the
  367. lottery.  You may not have the winning ticket, but the Scuba RoundTable has
  368. one of the most extensive online listings of dive destinations available.

  370. Bahamas, Scotland and Cancun, while providing information on everything from
  371. shark diving expeditions to exploring sunken U-Boats off the U.S. coast.

  381. to give scuba divers a high-tech, hands-on opportunity to learn about
  382. exploring, working and living in the sea. It's the first program of its kind
  383. offered to the diving public, and will be the first live computer conference
  384. to be held from an underwater domain. Watch GEnie and the Scuba RoundTable

  1137. mayhem. Battles from Waterloo to Gettysburg to Desert Storm are fought on
  1138. boards and computer screens over and over again.

  1140.      War may be hell, but for wargame fans, it's a little slice of heaven.
  1141.   
  1142.      With the thousands of games, variations and simulations in this martial
  1143. nirvana, only a few ever achieve legendary status. Chess is one. Harpoon is
  1144. another.

  1148. \\\ Best Naval Simulation Available   For the uninitiated, Harpoon is a
  1149.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  simulation of modern naval warfare,
  1150. employing real-world weapons, tactics and strategies.
  1151.   
  1152.      The original board game version of Harpoon was created in 1980 by naval
  1153. officer and best-selling author, Larry Bond. In 1989, a company called
  1154. Three-Sixty Pacific, working with Bond and the original Game Designer's
  1155. Workshop group, published the first computer version. And in 1993, Harpoon II
  1156. hit the shelves.
  1157.   
  1158.      Wrapping extensive declassified ship and weapon systems data around a
  1159. deceptively simple game system, the board game version of Harpoon was good
  1160. enough to win an unprecedented two H.C. Wells awards. And good enough to form
  1161. the technical basis for Tom Clancy's mega-hit, "The Hunt For Red October."
  1162.   
  1163.      "Harpoon is almost certainly the best naval simulation available to the
  1164. public," Clancy writes in his Foreword to the 1989 computer version. "The only
  1165. games more detailed are classified, which does not necessarily mean 'better,'
  1166. by the way. And a lot more expensive."
  1167.   
  1168.      As good as the computer versions are, they still lack something from the
  1169. original board game: human opponents. Computer AI, no matter how cleverly
  1170. programmed, is no substitute for human ingenuity, creativity and cunning.
  1171.

  1184. the original 13 Scenarios from the GIUK (Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom)
  1185. Battleset are there -- Fortress Keflavik, Doolitov's Raid, Norwegian Entry,
  1186. The Duel -- each with the same combination of groups, the same Orders of
  1187. Battle, the same starting positions.

  1189.      What this means is that players familiar with the computer version can
  1190. now replay these scenarios against human opponents, while players new to
  1191. Harpoon can learn the game off-line.
  1192.   
  1193.      While Multi-Player Harpoon is identical in look and feel to the
  1194. standalone version, there are some key features that make it wholly unique.
  1195.   
  1196.      In Harpoon, players command all surface and air groups for either NATO
  1197. or the Warsaw Pact against a computer opponent. "Multi-Player Harpoon," Kesmai
  1198. points out, "adds real time communication between friendly (and enemy) forces,
  1199. encouraging a team approach and reducing the workload on each player. Groups
  1200. may be individually assigned to players, and each player may operate multiple
  1201. groups as desired. In addition, many different scenarios may be run
  1202. simultaneously by the MP Harpoon host, to accommodate multiple groups of
  1203. players who want to play together."
  1204.   
  1205.      With a constantly-shifting web of players competing and collaborating,
  1206. the possible variations are literally endless.
  1207.

  1210. \\\ Technicalities   Playing MP Harpoon is easy. Just download the Starter Kit
  1211.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  from the main menu at Page 855 to its own directory, and
  1212. run the self-extracting file from there.  It contains documentation and the
  1213. latest release of the graphics Front End.
  1214.   
  1215.      To run the FE, you need an IBM-Compatible with a 386 or better
  1216. processor, 2 megs of RAM, 3 or more megs of hard drive space, a mouse, and EGA
  1217. or better graphics card. Basically, if your system can run the original game,
  1218. it can run the Multi-Player version.
  1219.   
  1220.      Setting up the communications protocol is about as simple as it gets.
  1221. For some of us, however, that can still be confusing, so here's a quick
  1222. walkthrough.
  1223.   
  1224.      Under the Options menu, select 'Configure Serial Port' and click on the
  1225. appropriate buttons. Com2, 2400 bps, with 8N1 (8 data bits, No Parity, 1 Stop
  1226. Bit) is a fairly common configuration. Still under the Options menu, select
  1227. Configure Autodial and fill in the blanks. For example:
  1228.

  1230.      Dial String:     (Optional. Leave blank)
  1231.      Dial Mode:       Tone (most common)
  1232.      Ph Number:       Local GEnie number, or SprintNet number

  1240. \\\ Battle Stations   When you enter the game, you find yourself in the UN
  1241.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  Room -- a general conference area where you can meet
  1242. other players, call up a list of available games, player rosters and active
  1243. arenas, start a new game or continue an existing game. (One remarkable feature
  1244. of MP Harpoon is that games can be saved and resumed later, a welcome option
  1245. in a simulation where some scenarios can take hours to resolve.)
  1246.   
  1247.      To start a new game, just select Create a New Game from the Command menu
  1248. and follow the bouncing pointer: choose one of the 13 Scenarios from the GIUK
  1249. Battleset, set scenario options, give your game a name, select a Battle Leader
  1250. and pick a side (NATO or Warsaw Pact).
  1251.   
  1252.      Players are added to the game by entering their GE Mail names, and then
  1253. assigned to command one or more of the groups available in the chosen
  1254. scenario. Groups not assigned to players will be run by the computer.
  1255. Currently, MP Harpoon can handle up to 10 games, or Arenas, with up to 30
  1256. players in each Arena.
  1257.   
  1258.      When everyone's assigned and ready to play, the Battle Leader starts the
  1259. game.  From this point on, all the players are 'At Sea,' and the game
  1260. progresses without pause. The game screen, menus and all functions and
  1261. commands are exactly the same as the original computer version. (At press
  1262. time, Animations, Staff Reports, Staff Notes, Game Status and Weather Reports
  1263. were not implemented.)
  1264.   
  1265.      Players can communicate with each other by entering messages over a
  1266. public or private channel. Teams can plan tactics, coordinate attacks, and
  1267. give advice, while issuing threats, taunts or misinformation to their
  1268. opponents.
  1269.   
  1270.      This is where the immediacy and unpredictability of multi-player gaming
  1271. elevates Harpoon into an entirely new dimension. Scenarios can be played over
  1272. and over again, with never the same thing happening twice.

  1276. \\\ A New Era   For now, MP Harpoon is in open Beta. Not all the features
  1277.  \\\\\\\\\\\\\  have been implemented and bugs are being exterminated with
  1278. extreme prejudice.  But one of the best naval simulations of all time has come
  1279. to GEnie, and for wargamers young and old, novice and expert, its arrival
  1280. signals the beginning of a new era.

  1679. facilitate upgrades and cut through problems. Learning that the flash ROM on
  1680. his external Supra 288 modem could be upgraded through software, Terry first
  1681. downloaded File 1615 FLASHERS.SEA. Unfortunately, when he tried to upgrade his
  1682. modem, he got an error message instead of a successful upgrade. Supra
  1683. technical support solved the problem by supplying a code to "unlock" the ROM
  1684. so it could accept the new information.

  1687. telecommunication software programs. For example, Software Ventures supports
  1688. the popular Microphone line of telecommunications software products in

  1692. in Bulletin Board Category 3, as well as for several other programs, including

  1715. explained to Ken Mathew how to edit his Nav Tool settings off-line and how to
  1716. attach a binary file to GE Mail.

  1899. computer. You may recall in a previous issue of LiveWire that I mentioned
  1900. folks listening to CDs from their computers while typing in Aladdin, or
  1901. working on a layout in Calamus.  They have Anodyne Software to thank for that.

  1903.      GEnie is important to Roger and Anodyne. "Almost all of my business has
  1904. come directly or indirectly through information on GEnie," Roger said
  1905. recently.  "It's also my main means of user support, both for upgrades and
  1906. assistance."

  1909. out that he develops only for the Atari platform and doesn't see that changing
  1910. in the forseeable future. "The Atari platform has a number of advantages," he

  1912. good development tools, and plenty of opportunities to develop unique
  1913. products."
