- (____)'m pleased to announce that LiveWire has new life. Starting this month,
- Jay Kee of Calgary, Canada, has been promoted to LiveWire's Managing Editor,
- and Keith Garrett of Memphis, Tennessee, has become the magazine's Assistant
- Editor. These two talented word smiths, in company with Donn King, LiveWire's
- long-time Associate Editor and myself and the rest of the staff, are in the
- process of making changes to these electronic pages which we believe you'll
- find exciting.
-
- Yes, through the magic of telecommunications, the folks who create
- Multimedia LiveWire live and work all over North America now, from the coasts
- of Florida, New York, California and Hawaii, inland to Missouri, New Mexico,
- Arizona and Nebraska, and all the way north to Canada.
-
- What this means to you, dear reader, is that LiveWire will soon enjoy a
- behind-the-phosphor reorganization, and you can expect to see new features in
- our very next issue. We're working on comparisons of downloadable programs,
- and making the magazine more interactive by sponsoring contests with some
- downright decent prizes.
-
- Best of all, we have a scheme that will let us add these new featues
- without sacrificing our current coverage, so it won't take you any longer to
- download LiveWire even with these additions. How's that for GEnie magic?
-
-
-
- \\\ Letters to LIVEWIRE And since, by popular request, LiveWire is becoming
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ more interactive, we need your help to accomplish
- one part of that plan.
-
- __________________________________________________

- | |
- | Consider this your engraved invitation to write |
- | to LIVEWIRE with questions and comments on GEnie |
- | in particular and telecommunications in general. |
- | |
- | Send Your Letter to LIVEWIRE |
- | |
- \__________________________________________________/
-
-
- All we ask is that you NOT confuse LiveWire with GEnie Client Services.
- LiveWire is a mass communications medium, so if you need help with your
- account, or assistance in accomplishing something specific online, write to
- GEnie Client Services (GE Mail address: FEEDBACK). But if you have opinions,
- observations, or questions about LiveWire, GEnie, or things online in general,
- send your letter to LIVEWIRE.
-
- If your letter is selected, it will be published in LiveWire along with
- our response or answer, when appropriate. Write to the GE Mail address
- LIVEWIRE or via Internet mail to livewire@genie.geis.com. Your letter may be
- edited for readability, accuracy, and length, but we promise not to put words
- in your virtual mouth.
-
- You can look forward to seeing Letters to LIVEWIRE start in March. We'll
- get busy reading your letters and adding other new features to that issue as
- well.
-
-
-
- \\\ What's Hot In the meantime, see if Keith Garrett's Space & Science
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ story in this issue doesn't make you smile. And remember
- that the ARTIST/Dialog products covered in Donn King's column are half price
- that month -- which includes Commerce Business Daily for all 28 days of
- February. As always, Joanna Strohn points to fascinating Library files you can
- download in NetSearch, and Mark Hiatt reminds you of some profitable ways to
- spread GEnie Magic.
-
- And don't forget to remember your sweetheart on Valentine's Day. Flowers
- and candy are sweet, but it's the little things (even red balloons) that
- count. Something as fleeting as a hug can make a big difference in someone's
- life. In fact, why wait for February 14th? Go hug someone right now, online or
- off. You don't even need to tell 'em I sent you.
-
-
- Seeya online!

- (_/roduct Support. To paraphrase the old American Bandstand axiom, it has a
- good beat and it's easy to dance to. As long as you're talking about computer
- hardware, or software, or peripherals. But what if you're not?
-
- What if you're talking about people hardware, software and peripherals?
- Like housing and transportation, or leisure and entertainment. What do you do
- when you need help deciding what to buy? Or you need troubleshooting advice,
- tips on maintenance and repair, or information on new products and services?
-
- Well, do what thousands of people do every day. Turn on your computer.
- And log onto GEnie.
-
-
-
- \\\ Basic People Hardware The care and feeding of computers has long been
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ an area of interest for people on GEnie -- not
- surprising, really, when you consider that you can't log on without one.
-
- There are dozens of RoundTables devoted to a melting pot of diverse
- computer platforms, with Bulletin Boards, Conferences, and Libraries packed
- with advice, information and product support. But there's more to life than
- computers. And more to GEnie than computing.
-
- A quick visit to the GEnie Index at Page 15 (keyword INDEX) reveals just
- how much more, and you aren't charged standard connect fees while you're
- there. From that menu you can generate a listing of all GEnie products and
- services, arranged alphabetically or by Page Number with either short or long
- descriptions. The short description option alone produces several pages of
- listings, with literally hundreds of options.
-
- As you browse through the listings, a couple of things jump out at you.
- The sheer number of choices available; and the incredible variety of subjects
- and interests they represent -- subjects and interests that have nothing to do
- with computers, and everything to do with people.
-
- It would take a couple of years and several books to cover everything in
- that listing. Space and time permit something slightly less ambitious. So
- let's start with some basic people hardware -- cars and homes -- and go from
- there.
-
-
-
- \\\ A Good Roadmap The Automotive RoundTable at Page 755 (keyword AUTO) is
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ a vast storehouse of information, advice and discussion
- dedicated to our love affair with the automobile. It's an affair fraught with
- peril, plagued by problems, besieged by frustration; a love-hate relationship
- desperately in need of a good roadmap.
-
- The Automotive RoundTable gives you that map.
-
- Its Bulletin Board contains dozens of Categories and hundreds of Topics
- that cover every conceivable possibility on the automotive highway, from
- vintage cars to alternative energy vehicles.
-
- For instance, if you're after some inside information on financing,
- credit, insurance, sales tactics and counter-tactics; or looking for solid
- advice on the advantages and disadvantages of buying through a broker, find a
- parking spot in Category 2, The Car Buying Experience.
-
- If you're interested in detailed evaluations of the best car values under
- $20,000, curious about the relative merit of oil treatments, fuel additives
- and synthetics, or just want to catch the GEnie New Car Reviews, pull in at
- Category 14, Product and Vehicle Reviews.
-
- And if the care and feeding of your four-wheeled monster is keeping you
- up nights, make a pit stop at Category 3 or 4 -- Ask The Mechanic. Category 3
- covers imports; Category 4 deals with domestics. Both offer professional
- advice, hints, tips and diagnostic assistance on every make and model, from
- Mercedes-Benz and Audi, to Yugo and Lada.
-
- The Automotive RoundTable is also your GEnie source for the NMA -- the
- National Motor Association. You can join from the Main Menu at Page 755 on
- option 6, or sign-in if you're already a member using option 7.
-
- The NMA offers additional support and protection for motorists,
- including a bi-monthly newsletter and regular bulletins. And members on GEnie
- enjoy access to the private NMA Member's Lounge where special bulletins are
- available free.
-
-
-
- \\\ Home Is Where the Modem Is They say home is where the heart is. But
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ it's also where the mortgage is, along with
- the plumbing and the wiring, the furnace and the hot water tank, the fence and
- the lawn, the maintenance, the repairs, the landlord and the lease.
-
- Apartment or condo; mansion or bungalow -- whether you're renting or
- leasing or just holding it for the bank, Home is where the modem is, on GEnie
- at Page 955 (keyword HOME).
-
- The Home and Real Estate RoundTable is a repository of invaluable
- information, resources and support. The Library contains files on financing
- and appraising, sales aids and listings, even GIF files of actual properties.
- And the Bulletin Board offers timely advice on everything from contracts,
- financing and taxes, to construction, landscaping and redecorating.
-
- Movers and shakers will want to check out the investment opportunities in
- Category 11; builders and breakers will find Category 17, Home Building and
- Construction, particularly helpful. And everybody will want to pay a visit to
- Category 24, Ask the Taxman.
-
- Buying or selling a home can be a real headache. But you can get fast
- relief on things like equity sharing, inspections, closing costs, tax laws and
- assumable loans from experts in Categories 5 and 6. If you happen to be an
- agent, or if you're looking to buy property in another state, drop in to
- Category 9, Home/Real Estate Listings. And if you want to expand your market
- of potential buyers, put an ad in Category 12, Anything Goes.
-
- The Real Estate RoundTable is also the place to go on GEnie to order a
- free copy of the Homes & Land Magazine or the Rental Guide Magazine from Homes
- & Land Publishing Corporation. These magazines are available throughout most
- of the U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. Simply select option 7 from the
- Main Menu on Page 955 to order.
-
-
-
- \\\ The Final Frontier The hardware's installed: the house is built and the
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ car is running and everything is working fine. What
- about peripherals and software?
-
- Take a look at the Index, browse through the listings, and you'll find
- all sorts of RoundTables devoted to the support of people peripherals like
- dining, travel, entertainment, sports and hobbies. Pick one you like, and go
- for it. Like scuba diving.
-
- Space may be the final frontier, but diving is the first. The Scuba
- RoundTable (Page 650, keyword SCUBA) surfaced on GEnie over eight years ago
- and has grown to encompass an extensive Library, dozens of Categories and
- hundreds of Topics relating to the sport of diving. The information is
- current, accurate and relevant, touching on subjects as diverse as cave
- diving, night diving, dive physics, dive medicine, treasure hunting, and
- underwater navigation.
-
- The RoundTable is home to two professional associations: NAUI online (the
- National Association of Underwater Instructors) in Category 6; and PADI Online
- (the Professional Association of Diving Instructors), in Category 7. Both are
- open Categories and offer a wealth of information on certification, training
- and courses.
-
- Advanced divers into things like wreck diving, high altitude diving,
- rescue or river diving, and divers interested in mathematical diving models,
- pressure tables, depth limits and effects, mixed gas Scuba and dive physics --
- will find a treasure of data, advice and opinion in the Tek/REC and HIGH/tek
- diving Categories (12 and 13).
-
- Unless you're content with exploring the local pond, learning about new
- and exotic dive destinations will rank right up there with winning the
- lottery. You may not have the winning ticket, but the Scuba RoundTable has
- one of the most extensive online listings of dive destinations available.
- Categories 19 through 28 cover locations from Papua and Micronesia to the
- Bahamas, Scotland and Cancun, while providing information on everything from
- shark diving expeditions to exploring sunken U-Boats off the U.S. coast.
-
- The Scuba RoundTable also provides online product support for Orca
- Products, SubXero Housings, DUI, Underwater USA and Ikelite Underwater
- Systems.
-
- Perhaps the biggest news for divers, however, is a planned February
- Real-Time Conference from the underwater habitat of the Man In The Sea Program
- in Key Largo, Florida. MITS, pioneered by Astronaut-turned Aquanaut Scott
- Carpenter and ocean pioneer Ian Koblick, is a unique undersea program designed
- to give scuba divers a high-tech, hands-on opportunity to learn about
- exploring, working and living in the sea. It's the first program of its kind
- offered to the diving public, and will be the first live computer conference
- to be held from an underwater domain. Watch GEnie and the Scuba RoundTable
- banners for the exact dates and time. It's an event you won't want to miss.
-
-
-
- \\\ Looking For the Scoop Pick another people peripheral, a hobby this time
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ -- like amateur radio. Scan the Index, and there
- you are: The Radio & Electronics RoundTable on Page 345 (keyword RADIO).
-
- Shortwave or longwave, scanners or CBs, the Radio & Electronics RT
- provides support and information across a wide range of interests for amateur
- radio enthusiasts.
-
- Looking for the scoop on packet radio hardware? Anxious about antennas?
- Or just want to get caught up on the latest new equipment reviews? Check out
- Bulletin Board Category 8, Amateur Radio Operating, Hardware/Software and
- News. If you're interested in collecting and restoring antique or classic
- electronics, tune in to Category 12. And if you're after a little helpful
- advice, pay a visit to the Electronic Service and Repair Shop in Category 22.
-
- Online product support has just been introduced on the Radio &
- Electronics RoundTable, giving radio-active folks direct access to company
- reps from the following organizations:
-
- DataFile, Inc. ............... Category 15, topic 2
- TRS Consultants .............. Category 15, topic 3
- Marymac ...................... Category 15, topic 4
- Optoelectronics .............. Category 15, topic 5
- PerCon Corporation ........... Category 15, topic 6
- CQ Magazine .................. Category 16, topic 2
- Popular Communications ....... Category 16, topic 3
- Communications Quarterly ..... Category 16, topic 4
- Electronic Servicing &
- Technology Magazine ........ Category 16, topic 5
- Microcomputer Journal ........ Category 16, topic 6
- Spec-Com Journal ............. Category 16, topic 8
-
-
- The Library contains a mixed bag of files, including project text and
- schematics, ARRL bulletins, photos and images, Internet newsgroup digests --
- even actual computer software for a variety of platforms.
-
- You can access the Amateur Radio Callsign Database directly from the
- Main Menu (option 12 on Page 345), take a Radio-Electronics knowledge quiz
- (option 6), request free amateur radio information kits (option 8), or take a
- look at the Amateur Radio Exam Schedule (option 11). And if you want to get
- caught up on all the latest R&E news, it's displayed continuously in
- Conference Room 1 (option 2 on Page 345). How's that for support?
-
-
-
- \\\ Yes, Virginia Product support. It's not just computers; it's people.
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Before we go out to play, before we build that house or
- buy that car, we've got questions to ask, information to find, comparisons to
- make. And GEnie has the products and services to support those needs.
-
- Yes, Virginia, there is more to life than computers. And more to GEnie
- than computing. Just don't let your computer hear you say that. You may end up
- paying an unexpected visit to one of the computing RoundTables.

- Do bookshelves rank high on your list of essential home furnishings, and
- do you have a reading rack in the bathroom? When you sit down to a quick bowl
- of cereal in the morning, and nothing else is handy, do you find yourself
- reading the cereal box? If so, GEnie's new Readers RoundTable is for you!
-
-
-
- \\\ Classic to Bestsellers The Readers RoundTable (on Page 1590, Keyword
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ READERS) is the ultimate book club -- a real
- treat for the avid reader. Its pages are filled with members' book reviews,
- publishers' announcements, and chapter excerpts from new releases. Its Library
- contains an ever-growing selection of important works by writers such as
- Tolstoy, Aristotle, Voltaire, and Shakespeare -- to download and read at your
- leisure. And there's something there for readers of all persuasions.
-
- Young readers will enjoy Robert Louis Stevenson's "A Child's Garden of
- Verses" (File 20 CHILDVER.TXT). Jack London's classic novella, "Call of the
- Wild," (File 22 CALLWILD.TXT) is a good choice for the adventure lover, and no
- electronic library is complete without the complete works of William
- Shakespeare (File 25 SHAKESPR.ZIP), which includes an addendum glossary.
-
-
-
- \\\ What's Hot Keep abreast of what's hot and what's not with the Readers
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ RoundTable's unique bestsellers list, compiled from
- nationally known sources and information obtained from privately-owned
- bookstores nationwide. Discover book lovers' treasure troves as the Readers
- RoundTable spotlights selected bookstores from around the country.
-
- Current bestsellers have their own topics for discussion in the Bulletin
- Board. Read what members of the Readers RoundTable -- voracious readers like
- yourself -- have to say about the books they've read, and add your own
- opinions. Genre fiction, periodicals and anthologies, poetry, non-fiction,
- children's literature, and the classics are discussed as well.
-
- You'll find other lists in the Library: a list of mystery novels by and
- about women (File 5 WOMENMYS.LST); a list of 304 pseudonyms used by mystery
- writers (File 1 PSEUDO#1.TXT); a list of all winners of the Edgar Allen Poe
- Awards (File 9 EDGARS1.LST) as far back as the records go, to name a few.
- These lists are great for research, and can help narrow, or perhaps broaden,
- your search for favorite types of books.
-
-
-
- \\\ Featured Authors Featured Authors of the Month will have a whole
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ category in the Bulletin Board in which to share
- anecdotes, discuss ideas for future projects, and chat with the folks who read
- their books. Listeners to National Public Radio know last month's featured
- author, Daniel Pinkwater, as a popular commentator on the flagship news
- program, "All Things Considered." Daniel previewed his first (and, according
- to him, possibly last) adult book, "The Afterlife Diet," which is being
- published this month (February).
-
- As Author of the Month, Daniel has written more than 60 distinguished
- books for children and young adults. He is also the author of "Fish Whistle"
- and "Chicago Days, Hoboken Nights," and has published articles and reviews in
- periodicals such as Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, and The
- Washington Post.
-
- You'll also find biographical information, excerpts, publishers' press
- releases, and whatever else the staff of the Readers RoundTable can dig up to
- help you get to know the featured author a little better. Finally, you'll have
- a chance to meet and chat with some of your favorite (or soon-to-be-favorite)
- authors in lively Real-Time Conferences.
-
- At press time, February's Author of the Month is a mystery -- literally.
- But here's a clue: check out Bulletin Board Category 27! And be sure to drop
- by next month (March) to meet Barbara Paul -- if you don't know her already.
- Barbara is the author of five science fiction novels, sixteen mystery novels,
- and more than twenty short stories. A long-time GEnie member, Barbara's
- intelligence, gift of gab, and keen sense of humor are familiar to members of
- GEnie's Writers' Ink RoundTable.
-
-
-
- \\\ Writers' Ink The Writers' Ink RoundTable (on GEnie Page 440, keyword
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ WRITERS), which is also managed by Readers RoundTable
- Chief Sysop Peter Ziebel, was named one of COMPUTE Magazine's "12 Great Places
- Online" in its August 1994 issue. And NETGUIDE Magazine had this to say about
- Writers' Ink in their December 1994 issue: "Our only complaint? There's so
- much material here that we could spend all our time online reading. We don't
- think that would make our editors happy."
-
- The Readers RoundTable, too, promises to be "a good read." So join us --

- (____)t is with great pleasure that I introduce our guest speaker for this
- issue of LiveWire. He's come a long way just to deliver this message, so
- please give a warm welcome to <ahem> Professor Azasis of Aldebaran IV.
- Professor?
-
- Hello, Earthlings!
-
- My government has asked me to convey its fondest regards to the
- intelligent beings of Earth. So, I figured while I was here I would greet you
- humans, too.
-
- This is also a good time to remind you of the upcoming Galactic Aptitude
- Gauge Test. Since low GAG scores by a planet's populace incur the penalty of
- global sterilization, it would probably be in your best interest to do a
- little cramming. Besides, the dolphins will be mad if you bring their average
- down simply because you outnumber them.
-
- With that in mind, they recommend that you take advantage of a human
- resource located in Terran cyberspace. This vast storehouse of knowledge is,
- of course, GEnie -- specifically, the Space & Science RoundTable located at
- Page 460, with the keyword SPACERT.
-
-
-
- \\\ Information Center I suggest you start with the Space & Science
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Information Center on GEnie Page 461. Along with
- more general references available there -- such as Groliers Encyclopedia, the
- GEnie Bookshelf, and the GEnie Reference Center -- the Information Center
- offers access to the Science Center Index, the CIA World Factbook, and the
- Weather Center.
-
- The Science Center Index (on Menu Option 7) is the first of two
- informational databases, which are also known as KnowledgeBases. It contains
- references to over 6,500 articles published in 26 annual journals since 1984.
- Other magazines are featured as well, such as the Planetary Society's
- "Planetary Report." These publications cover fields from astronomy and
- biochemistry to public health and sociology.
-
- The other KnowledgeBase is the CIA World Factbook (on Menu Option 8),
- based on an annual publication about the countries of the planet Earth. (There
- are a multitude of more interesting planets, but fortunately for you folks,
- you will only be tested about your own homeworld.) Besides information about
- all of Earth's countries, you can get reference maps taken straight from the
- CIA Wold Factbook and stored in JPEG format in the Space & Science Software
- Library.
-
- The Weather Center on GEnie Page 462 is a source of weather information
- and images for the discerning human. Weather summaries and forecasts are
- available for select cities around the globe. Other useful summaries can be
- found there, such as the National Flood Summary and the UV Index. There's even
- an Aladdin script available to automate downloading of any or all of these
- products -- File 6473 WXCENTER.ZIP in Space & Science Software Library 11.
-
- You can also download JPEG images of weather maps and satellite pictures
- of North America and Europe, some of which are updated every two hours.
- There's even a composite infrared image of weather around the world as seen by
- three different satellites, updated every three hours. If you need more
- information about JPEG images, refer to Category 1, Topic 9 of the Space &
- Science Bulletin Board -- "How do I view Picture Files?"
-
-
-
- \\\ Current Events The Space & Science RoundTable is also the best place to
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ keep track of what's happening in your simplistic modern
- science and technology. The Bulletin Board is a virtual storehouse of
- information on topics ranging from Anthropology to Antimatter, Holography to
- the Hubble Space Telescope, and Cold Fusion to, yes, Close Encounters. This is
- also the meeting place of the GEnie Chapter of the National Space Society --
- my kind of humans.
-
- To get started, study the following information recently gathered from
- Space & Science RoundTable resources. Remember: This WILL be on the test.
-
- February 2: The Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to carry Spacehab-3
- -- Earth's only commercial manned space system -- into orbit. The shuttle will
- rendezvous with Mir, the Russian space station, in preparation for a later
- docking flight.
-
- February 17: 30th anniversary of the Ranger 8 mission to impact a space
- probe onto your moon, returning pictures all the way down.
-
- February 18: The 65th anniversary of the discovery of Pluto.
-
- February 23: Space Shuttle Endeavour is scheduled to lift off for a
- second mission dedicated to ultraviolet astronomy. (This may be a trick
- question as this launch was recently pushed back to March 2nd.)
-
- February 27-March 11: Tests of a design for a Mars Rover begin on
- Hawaii's Kilauea. In cooperation with the Planetary Society, the Space &
- Science RoundTable will have a Real-Time Conference devoted to these tests in
- late February. At least one of the scientists involved in the testing is
- expected to be present to discuss the Rover and answer questions.
-
- Good Luck!
-
- Using the resources I've just described, you should have no trouble
- scoring well on the GAG Test, thereby saving humanity from utter destruction.
- Just in case (and because I'm in a generous mood), here are the answers to
- three other questions you may be asked:
-
- Aldebaran is 70 light-years from Earth.
- Pluto is about 40 AU from Earth's sun.
- GEnie is only as far away as your computer.

- For several special years I had the pleasure of sharing life with Max, an

- (____/oy, we're really getting into the Information Age, aren't we? Every
- magazine you pick up these days has a Letter to the Editor with an Internet
- stamp on it. An electronic mailbox is getting to be THE thing to have if
- you're going to be one of the Cool Kids this year, while computers, online
- networks and, yes, the Information Superhighway are more and more in the news.
-
- But some days it seems like it's easier to find a Michael Douglas movie
- that doesn't feature his hiney, than it is to find mention of GEnie in the
- popular media. You can help with that -- and pick up a few hours of standard
- usage credit for your efforts.
-
-
-
- \\\ Be a Buddy The first, easiest, and most effective way to go about this
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\ is through the GEnie Buddy program. You can read all about
- it on GEnie Page 1111, but the kernel is this: If you engage in one-on-one,
- retail, hand-to-hand GEnie Evangelism and bring a friend online, you'll score
- a tidy little bounty of five hours of standard connect time, worth up to $15
- in the USA or $20 in Canada.
-
- You probably have friends who have computers. You may even know of a few
- folks with similar interests, who have computers. Invite them over some
- evening, and give them a little online tour. Show them how they can send and
- and receive Internet mail at no extra charge, how messages in GEnie's Bulletin
- Boards don't evaporate after only a few days. Visit one of the Real-Time
- Conferences online, or pull up a few pages from the INDEX to show them what we
- enjoy here on GEnie.
-
- If they follow through and sign up, and stick around, they'll get their
- first month's subscription fee waived and also get a total of TEN free hours
- of standard connect time, a $26.95 deal ($34.95, for Canadians, eh?)! And
- everybody wins. You have a new (old) friend you can reach online; they get to
- enjoy the world of GEnie, while everyone gets the benefit of a busier and
- happier GEnie with more people to meet, more opinions to consider, more
- software to download and more opponents in the multi-player games.
-
-
-
- \\\ Business Boosters Another thing you can do -- this time in a business
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ setting -- is to include your GE Mail address (or
- your GEnie Internet address) on your business cards, office stationery,
- business advertising, and all that kind of stuff. The booty here is $3 in the
- U.S. and $4 in Canada, for qualified business items. Just send along a copy to
- GEnie headquarters.
-
- The payoff can even be better than a free hour of time, though. If you're
- doing business online, then some portion of your GEnie bill may be tax
- deductible! Now, I'm not an income tax professional (and I don't even play one
- on TV), but it seems to me that if the big shots can buy each other dinners,
- take expensive trips and attend cruises that feature business speakers, and
- write all of that off on their taxes, you might be able to get something back,
- too. And if it doesn't work out, I'm told that the GEnie node in Leavenworth,
- Kansas works great.
-
- Visit GEnie's Tax RoundTable or consult with your own tax preparation
- professional to see how your situation works. For more information about
- GEnie's Business Boosters, visit GEnie Page 1112.
-
-
-
- \\\ Win-Win-Win GEnie is working on more and better advertising for this
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ new year. Our graphical front-end software is deep into the
- development cycle and even our text-based interface is being shined-up to make
- things easier and faster to navigate. The hope is that fewer people you
- approach will think of garage door openers or belly dancers when you mention
- "GEnie." And once they're online, they will be better able to use the network
- and discover it to be the tremendous value that you and I have come to know
- and love.
-
- That's a deal where everybody wins!

- Harpoon: What If They Gave a War and Everybody Played?

- ```````````
-
-
- ____
- / ___)
- / (_
- / ___)
- / (_
- (____)very day, millions of people get together for a little friendly military
- mayhem. Battles from Waterloo to Gettysburg to Desert Storm are fought on
- boards and computer screens over and over again.
-
- War may be hell, but for wargame fans, it's a little slice of heaven.
-
- With the thousands of games, variations and simulations in this martial
- nirvana, only a few ever achieve legendary status. Chess is one. Harpoon is
- another.
-
-
-
- \\\ Best Naval Simulation Available For the uninitiated, Harpoon is a
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ simulation of modern naval warfare,
- employing real-world weapons, tactics and strategies.
-
- The original board game version of Harpoon was created in 1980 by naval
- officer and best-selling author, Larry Bond. In 1989, a company called
- Three-Sixty Pacific, working with Bond and the original Game Designer's
- Workshop group, published the first computer version. And in 1993, Harpoon II
- hit the shelves.
-
- Wrapping extensive declassified ship and weapon systems data around a
- deceptively simple game system, the board game version of Harpoon was good
- enough to win an unprecedented two H.C. Wells awards. And good enough to form
- the technical basis for Tom Clancy's mega-hit, "The Hunt For Red October."
-
- "Harpoon is almost certainly the best naval simulation available to the
- public," Clancy writes in his Foreword to the 1989 computer version. "The only
- games more detailed are classified, which does not necessarily mean 'better,'
- by the way. And a lot more expensive."
-
- As good as the computer versions are, they still lack something from the
- original board game: human opponents. Computer AI, no matter how cleverly
- programmed, is no substitute for human ingenuity, creativity and cunning.
-
- Just imagine what you could do if you could combine the best of both.
- Then pay a visit to GEnie Page 855. And download the Starter Kit to Kesmai's
- new MultiPlayer Harpoon(TM). And stop imagining.
-
-
-
- \\\ The Same But Different Kesmai, creators of the revolutionary
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ multi-player air combat simulation Air Warrior,
- have produced what could possibly be the ultimate wargaming experience.
-
- Multi-Player Harpoon is an exact online model of the original Three-Sixty
- computer simulation, right down to the graphics, menus and interface. All of
- the original 13 Scenarios from the GIUK (Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom)
- Battleset are there -- Fortress Keflavik, Doolitov's Raid, Norwegian Entry,
- The Duel -- each with the same combination of groups, the same Orders of
- Battle, the same starting positions.
-
- What this means is that players familiar with the computer version can
- now replay these scenarios against human opponents, while players new to
- Harpoon can learn the game off-line.
-
- While Multi-Player Harpoon is identical in look and feel to the
- standalone version, there are some key features that make it wholly unique.
-
- In Harpoon, players command all surface and air groups for either NATO
- or the Warsaw Pact against a computer opponent. "Multi-Player Harpoon," Kesmai
- points out, "adds real time communication between friendly (and enemy) forces,
- encouraging a team approach and reducing the workload on each player. Groups
- may be individually assigned to players, and each player may operate multiple
- groups as desired. In addition, many different scenarios may be run
- simultaneously by the MP Harpoon host, to accommodate multiple groups of
- players who want to play together."
-
- With a constantly-shifting web of players competing and collaborating,
- the possible variations are literally endless.
-
-
-
- \\\ Technicalities Playing MP Harpoon is easy. Just download the Starter Kit
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ from the main menu at Page 855 to its own directory, and
- run the self-extracting file from there. It contains documentation and the
- latest release of the graphics Front End.
-
- To run the FE, you need an IBM-Compatible with a 386 or better
- processor, 2 megs of RAM, 3 or more megs of hard drive space, a mouse, and EGA
- or better graphics card. Basically, if your system can run the original game,
- it can run the Multi-Player version.
-
- Setting up the communications protocol is about as simple as it gets.
- For some of us, however, that can still be confusing, so here's a quick
- walkthrough.
-
- Under the Options menu, select 'Configure Serial Port' and click on the
- appropriate buttons. Com2, 2400 bps, with 8N1 (8 data bits, No Parity, 1 Stop
- Bit) is a fairly common configuration. Still under the Options menu, select
- Configure Autodial and fill in the blanks. For example:
-
- Modem Init: ATZ
- Dial String: (Optional. Leave blank)
- Dial Mode: Tone (most common)
- Ph Number: Local GEnie number, or SprintNet number
- Dial Script: GDirect.cmd or GSprint.cmd
- User Number: (Self-explanatory)
- Password: (Self-explanatory)
- Direct Page: M855;5 to go directly into the game
-
-
-
- \\\ Battle Stations When you enter the game, you find yourself in the UN
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Room -- a general conference area where you can meet
- other players, call up a list of available games, player rosters and active
- arenas, start a new game or continue an existing game. (One remarkable feature
- of MP Harpoon is that games can be saved and resumed later, a welcome option
- in a simulation where some scenarios can take hours to resolve.)
-
- To start a new game, just select Create a New Game from the Command menu
- and follow the bouncing pointer: choose one of the 13 Scenarios from the GIUK
- Battleset, set scenario options, give your game a name, select a Battle Leader
- and pick a side (NATO or Warsaw Pact).
-
- Players are added to the game by entering their GE Mail names, and then
- assigned to command one or more of the groups available in the chosen
- scenario. Groups not assigned to players will be run by the computer.
- Currently, MP Harpoon can handle up to 10 games, or Arenas, with up to 30
- players in each Arena.
-
- When everyone's assigned and ready to play, the Battle Leader starts the
- game. From this point on, all the players are 'At Sea,' and the game
- progresses without pause. The game screen, menus and all functions and
- commands are exactly the same as the original computer version. (At press
- time, Animations, Staff Reports, Staff Notes, Game Status and Weather Reports
- were not implemented.)
-
- Players can communicate with each other by entering messages over a
- public or private channel. Teams can plan tactics, coordinate attacks, and
- give advice, while issuing threats, taunts or misinformation to their
- opponents.
-
- This is where the immediacy and unpredictability of multi-player gaming
- elevates Harpoon into an entirely new dimension. Scenarios can be played over

- (_/ \_)s more and more computer vendors turn to 900 telephone numbers,
- by-the-minute charges or limited hours of availability for product support,
- finding answers and getting the help you need becomes less convenient and,
- potentially, more expensive. Many people turn to bulletin board systems and
- online services like GEnie to find support for the products they're using.
-
-
-
- \\\ Windows 95 Support How about product support for a much
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ballyhooed-but-not-yet-available product? The
- Windows 95 News Highlight Center at GEnie Page 95 is the central location of
- general information regarding the forthcoming release of the Microsoft Windows
- 95 Operating System. Select Option 2 on the menu for the current issue of the
- WinNews electronic newsletter. Or download informative files (in Microsoft
- Word for Windows 2.0, ASCII, or Postscript formats), like the Windows 95
- Resource Kit or Windows 95 Beta 2 Reviewer's Guide from the Highlight Center
- menu.
-
- Finally, there's the new Windows 95 RoundTable! This area has a Bulletin
- Board where you can discuss Windows 95 with beta testers, fellow users and
- experts like Microsoft Product Manager Alec Saunders. And the RoundTable
- Library offers more informative files, like the transcript of a Real-Time
- Conference with Adrian King, author of "Inside Windows 95" (File 85
- 941109.ZIP).
-
- The Windows 95 RoundTable is located at GEnie Page 96 (Keyword
- WINDOWS95). It's also accessible as an option from the Windows 95 Highlight
- Center menu at Page 95.

- \\\ Yet More Product Support Support for several products for
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ IBM-Compatibles is available in Bulletin Board
- Categories 25 through 32 in the IBM PC RoundTable at Page 615 (Keyword IBMPC)
- and the IBM and Compatibles Product Support RoundTable at Page 115 (keyword
- IBMSUPPORT), as well as the Windows RoundTable (Page 1335 or WINDOWS) and the
- OS/2 RoundTable (Page 1400 or OS/2). Products and vendors include the Gateway
- 2000 line of computers, OTC Corporation, Supra Corporation, Boca Research,
- Berkeley Systems, Development Technologies, Oberon Software, Advanced Gravis,
- DSE Software Publishing, and Parsons Technology.
-
- Sysop Charlie Strom points to Parsons Technology and Berkeley Systems as
- examples of particularly dedicated and responsive online support. He says, "We
- sysops can talk our heads off, but there is no substitute for customers
- telling vendors that they want support here on GEnie."
-
-
-
- \\\ Son of Yet More Product Support While RoundTables for Microsoft (Page
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 505, Keyword MICROSOFT), Borland (Page
- 765, BORLAND), and WordPerfect (Page 521, WP) are primarily user-to-user s
- support sites, they often offer official, vendor-supplied FAQs (Frequently
- Asked Questions files), upgrade files and bug fixes. For example, Microsoft
- Access owners can download the Microsoft Access version 2.0 Service Pack from
- the Microsoft RoundTable Library. This Service Pack includes the latest
- versions of the Jet database engine (version 2.5); the OLE dynamic link
- libraries (version 2.02); and new ISAMs for xBASE, Btrieve, and Paradox. It's
- in File 5807 ACCSVC.EXE.
-
- As always, this month's tour of GEnie's IBM-Compatible Software Libraries
- yields several gems.
-
-
-
- \\\ Windows RoundTable Let's start in the Windows RoundTable Library (Page
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 1335 or WINDOWS) with File 3447 WT20.ZIP, Wintune
- 2.0. This terrific diagnostic and benchmark tool from the editors of Windows
- magazine can be used to evaluate, optimize and tweak every aspect of your
- Windows system.
-
- File 3472 CRTAT2.ZIP is a more finely focused diagnostic utility.
- Version 2.0 of this CRT alignment tool contains several new setup screens and
- options which allow you to test and evaluate your Windows monitor (display) to
- determine if you are getting optimum performance.
-
- Also in the Windows Library, you'll find the latest version of Unicom, a
- powerful shareware communications program. Unicom 3.1e features a graphical
- interface, a toolbar, and modem lights like those on an external modem (a
- great feature if you have an internal unit). It also supports every transfer
- protocol used on any online service or network, and includes 57,600 baud
- throughput speed; WinScript for automatic recording or playback of macros and
- scripts; 16650 UART FIFO controls and support; GIF viewer; external protocol
- support; function key macros in plain English for user ID and passwords, and
- more.
-
- Be forewarned: Unicom's registration reminders, or "nag screens," appear
- frequently enough to be annoying and have been universally denounced by
- reviewers. However, Unicom is a powerful feature-packed program. If you can
- ignore the reminders long enough to evaluate it, it might be the one for you.
- Download File 3465 UC31E.EXE.
-
-
-
- \\\ IBM PC RoundTable Moving on to the IBM PC RoundTable Library (Page 615
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ or IBMPC), SemWare Editor (TSE) 2.0 Test-Drive is a
- demonstration version of the versatile, yet easy-to-use, DOS text editor from
- the makers of Qedit. Limited to 30 minutes or 4000 keystrokes per session,
- this demo will give you a good idea of TSE's power, speed, and flexibility.
- Several popular editor emulations and macros are included. The SemWare Editor
- (TSE) 2.0 Test-Drive is File 36967 TSETD2.ZIP.
-
- Need a way to organize and manage all the information you've been
- collecting online? Infomania (File 36955 INFOMA20.ZIP) lets you store all your
- text files off-line on floppies, yet finds any word or combination in less
- than a second. It will prompt you to insert the proper disk, if needed, then
- automatically display the file. You can read, copy, edit, or print any
- portion(s). Fully-functional evaluation shareware uploaded by the author,
- Infomania 2.0 handles thousands of files of any size, has context-sensitive
- hypertext help and mouse support.
-
-
-
- \\\ OS/2 RoundTable File 3390 OS2CFG9.ZIP is a "must-have" from the OS/2
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ RoundTable Library (Page 1400 or OS/2). Updated for
- Warp, this is the ninth version of Rick Meigs' comprehensive description of
- OS/2's CONFIG.SYS file. It's an excellent resource containing over 100
- kilobytes of information, tips, warnings and optimization data.
-
- OnScreen/2 is a sophisticated fullscreen text and binary file viewer for
- OS/2, DOS and Win32 operating systems running on 386 or faster
- IBM-Compatibles. OnScreen/2 displays files in a text window or fullscreen
- session, and provides scrolling, positioning and filtering commands. It's
- available as File 3381 OS2_03OR.ZIP.
-
- OS/2 folks in need of an excellent backup utility (and who isn't?)
- should try out File 3378 WPSBK30.ZIP, version 3.0 of Dave Lester's WPS backup
- program, now optimized for Warp 3.0.
-
-
-
- \\\ Multimedia RoundTable The Multimedia, Desktop Video and Virtual Reality
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ RoundTable Library on Page 2000 (Keyword
- MULTIMEDIA) offers lots of high-powered demonstration versions of commercial
- packages.
-
- If you want to "try before you buy" rendering 3-D images, check out the
- demo of Real 3D (version 2) for Windows from Realsoft in Finland (Files 1275
- REAL3D-1.ZIP through 1279 REAL3D-5.ZIP). Each file is over a megabyte in size,
- but Real 3D offers hours of creative enjoyment. Included are the
- modeler/renderer, plus a fully functional image display utility and an
- animation player.
-
- Real 3D constructs both wire-frame and gorgeous fully-rendered 256-color
- images you can experiment with and use as starting points in your own
- projects. Although you can't save 3-D renderings you create with this demo,
- you can always press the Print Screen key and save your creations in regular
- graphics files using a clipboard-compatible paint program or image processing
- utility like Paint Shop Pro in File 1231 PSP2.EXE.
-
- If you're into VR, check out File 1473 V2PLAYER.ZIP, a demonstration of
- Virtus' brand new WalkThrough Pro for Windows. With it comes seven animated
- 3-D renderings you and your mouse can walk through -- not to mention over,
- under and around.
-
- Allen Communication's demo of Quest 5.0, their new Windows multimedia
- authoring system, is in Multimedia Library Files 1502 QDEMO1.ZIP, 1503
- QDEMO2.ZIP and 1504 QDEMO3.ZIP. A demo of an MS-DOS version of this popular
- package is in Files 1016 QUEST1.ZIP and 1017 QUEST2.ZIP.
-
- Both versions show off to great advantage this high-flash, fully
- integrated multimedia package. With it, you can combine text, graphics,
- animation, video, and digitized audio to create dynamic interactive titles.
-
- Other impressive demos of multimedia authoring systems you can download
- include Lotus Freelance Graphics v2.0 in File 386 FLGR1V2.ZIP, and Harvard
- Graphics in File 999 HGWDEMO.ZIP.
-
- While you're there, pick some flowers for your Valentine sweetie -- in
- 256-color images, of course. Files 1477 through 1493 are lovely floral GIFs.
- Preview them in File 1494 FLWRCAT.GIF, a catalog GIF of thumbnail-sized images
- of each flower from which you can choose those you want to plant in your
- phosphor garden.
-
- Online product support comes in many forms -- from sysops and fellow
- users, to shareware authors and commercial vendors; from GE Mail and Bulletin
- Board postings, to information files and live Real-Time Conference Help Desks.
- Explore the many options available in GEnie's IBM-Compatible Computing
- RoundTables the next time you need help.

- (_____)ompanies offering product support through GEnie demonstrate a
- commitment to providing informational, cost-effective assistance to their
- customers. Macintosh owners will find a number of such dedicated vendors in
- the Macintosh Product Support RoundTable on Page 606 (Keyword MACSUPPORT).
-
- These companies provide answers to specific questions and problems in the
- Bulletin Board, as well as program demonstration versions, upgrade patches,
- and shareware programs through the corresponding Software Library. (Please
- note: all file numbers and Bulletin Board references in this article apply to
- the Product Support RoundTable, unless otherwise specified. Also, programs are
- frequently updated, so check for more recent versions of the files listed
- here.)
-
-
-
- \\\ Hands-On Help Not surprisingly, the Product Support RoundTable has
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ especially strong representation from vendors who supply
- telecommunications products. In the area of hardware, for instance, you'll
- find support for the well-known Supra line of modems in Bulletin Board
- Category 18.
-
- GEnie customer Terry Brewster discovered how online support can
- facilitate upgrades and cut through problems. Learning that the flash ROM on
- his external Supra 288 modem could be upgraded through software, Terry first
- downloaded File 1615 FLASHERS.SEA. Unfortunately, when he tried to upgrade his
- modem, he got an error message instead of a successful upgrade. Supra
- technical support solved the problem by supplying a code to "unlock" the ROM
- so it could accept the new information.
-
- You'll also find support for many of the leading Macintosh
- telecommunication software programs. For example, Software Ventures supports
- the popular Microphone line of telecommunications software products in
- Bulletin Board Category 17.
-
- Aladdin Software provides help for its SITcomm telecommunication program
- in Bulletin Board Category 3, as well as for several other programs, including
- its popular StuffIt file compression utility. You'll find the freeware StuffIt
- Expander in the Library, as File 1612 STUFFIT EXPANDER 3.5.2, and shareware
- StuffIt Lite as File 1618 STIFFIT LITE 3.5. For information on the latest
- upgrade to the commercial StuffIt Deluxe version of the program, read Bulletin
- Board Category 3, Topic 22, Message 18.
-
-
-
- \\\ Front End Support Using a "front-end" program to access GEnie can make
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ your onlife life a lot easier and more efficient. The
- Macintosh Product Support RoundTable provides support for three front-end
- products: GEnieNav (for Microphone), Djinn (for White Knight), and Online
- Servant, a HyperCard-based program.
-
- GEnieNav is available in Files 1601 GENIENAV 2.5.1 MP5 (for current
- versions of Microphone), 1602 GENIENAV 2.5.1 MP4 (for older versions of the
- program), and 1603 GENIENABV 2.5 REG FORM (registration form). Raven Systems,
- the publisher, provides support in Bulletin Board Catetory 8.
-
- In recent problem-solving activities, the Raven support team diagnosed
- Bob Tinkham's problem with reading mail as an inconsistency between the break
- character (for aborting an activity) in GEnieNav, and GEnie itself. They also
- explained to Ken Mathew how to edit his Nav Tool settings off-line and how to
- attach a binary file to GE Mail.
-
- Files 489-493 in the Product Support Library provide several slightly
- different versions of White Knight-based Djinn and its associated
- documentation. Check Bulletin Board Category 20 for Djinn product support. For
- White Knight support, check the FreeSoft RoundTable at Page 585. (Note: you
- must be a registered White Knight user to gain access to this area.)
-
- Discussions of Online Servant take place in Bulletin Board Category 45.
- The latest version appears as File 1611 SERVANT 1.32.SEA in the Product
- Support Library. This program requires HyperCard 2.1 or later, or the
- corresponding freeware HyperCard player -- available as file #32795
- HC2.2PLAYER.SIT V1.1 in the regular Macintosh Software Library on Page 605.
-
-
-
- \\\ Problem? No Problem! Servant's author, Paul Collins, is extremely
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ responsive to questions, problems and enhancement
- suggestions.
-
- For example, Ed Rolfs recently commented, "Running a Mac PowerBook 180
- with Servant 129 and am a new user. I really like your system. I think it
- would be helpful to be able to set 'read messages' for a different period of
- time for each RoundTable. Some I like to check more frequently than others and
- using the 'Do not select' button moves the RoundTable in with all others for
- which topics have not been downloaded. Also, is there a way to set your 'name'
- in a Category through Servant?"
-
- Paul's prompt response: "Ed! Welcome to Servant! I know what you mean
- about reading messages at different times. Very shortly we will have a minor
- upgrade that will let you set up groups of RoundTables. So you can have one
- group for daily, another for weekly. That should go a long way to addressing
- your concern. As to your name (the nickname after "E.ROLFS"), that's set
- automatically in every RoundTable from the 'Your Name' field on the Main
- Settings card."
-
- Ed's enthusiastic reply said it all. "Thanks, Paul. The check is in the
- mail. Great product."
-
- So remember, when you're ready to buy hardware or software, don't go to
- strangers! Support the companies that support YOU through their active
- participation on GEnie RoundTables. And don't neglect to pay shareware fees so
- that dedicated programmers will continue to provide us with useful, low-cost
- programs.

- (____) saw right off that Norman wasn't his usual bubbly self when he dropped
- by, so I offered him the usual -- a cup of cappuccino and a sympathetic ear.
- It did the trick. "My life is a shambles!" he said. "I don't get any support
- from anyone." Perhaps the long winter had gotten to him, I thought. Some
- amount of depression was to be expected. But this complaint, at least, was
- easy to solve.
-
- "Norman, Norman, Norman," I began, "you're just not looking in the right
- places. The first thing you should do is get off your seat and on your modem.
- Have you been to the *StarShip* lately?"
-
- He hadn't, and he shook his head in sad recognition of the fact.
-
- "You'll find more support in the *StarShip* than in your local hosiery
- store, my friend," I explained. "For starters, we've got the Helm Topic --
- Bulletin Board Category 7, Topic 10. You'll find Jerrall Nickerson, owner of
- Eagle Tree Software and the author of Helm, ready and waiting there with
- answers. In fact, many features of Helm have grown out of Jerrell's online
- interaction with users."
-
- I could see Norman starting to come out of his stupor, so I hastened on.
- "You'll find Jim Drew of Utilities Unlimited holding court in the various
- topics of Bulletin Board Category 31. If you need Emplant answers, or just
- want to find out about this multi-platform emulator, stop by. Elastic Reality,
- formerly ASDG, occupies Category 27, where Jeff Almasol is on hand to talk
- about ER's family of image processing products. And Bulletin Board Category 21
- is home to Nova Designs, the folks behind ImageFX and Cinemorph. Kermit
- Woodall is always more than happy to answer questions and provide information
- about new developments at Nova."
-
-
-
- \\\ Game Support The lights had come back on in Norman's eyes, but I wasn't
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ done yet. "If World War II fighters are your forte, buzz
- by Bulletin Board Category 24, home base for Jaeger Software. Anything you
- want to know about Fighter Duel Pro or the current tournament is in the those
- Topics. And did I mention Dark Unicorn Productions? They're developing various
- games, some of which incorporate Full Motion Video (FMV), and they live in
- Category 32.
-
- "Oregon Research, purveyors of HiSoft Pascal, Termite and other
- products, can be found in Category 32. And if that isn't enough, you're likely
- to bump into Michael Loader, representing Soft-Logik, in Category 5, Topics 5,
- 6, 11, and 19. This is where the various products of Soft-Logik -- including
- Pagestream, Typesmith, and Art Expression -- are discussed. Soft-Logik has
- their own support Roundtable, of course; just head for GEnie Page 385."
-
- Norman jumped up from the couch -- spilling his cappuccino in the
- process -- and bolted out my front door, screaming "Eureka! I've found
- support!"
-
-
-
- \\\ Library Support While mopping the steamy beverage from my carpet, I
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ pondered his situation further. He'd left so quickly
- that I hadn't been able to tell him about some of the new files in the
- *StarShip* Library. And there was plenty to talk about.
-
- Mandelbrot fans will be pleased to learn that Cygnus Software has
- released a demonstration version of Mand2000, Version 2. This upgrade to their
- sensational Mandelbrot generator is, well, sensational. Look for File 24665
- MANDV2DEMO.LHA. You can't save the images, but there's plenty of functionality
- in this demo.
-
- If you're thinking about buying a new word processor, File 25021
- WWPREVIEW.LHA contains a number of screenshots of WordWorth 3.1, as well as a
- chart comparing its features to Final Writer. And if you're trying to keep
- track of the warranties for all those goodies you have around the house, check
- out WARRANTY.LHA in File 24800. This Helm book provides an easy-to-use
- database for storing the purchase price, date, and warranty information in one
- handy location. You'll also need Helm or HelmBrowser (File 24160), of course.
-
- Tired of looking at the clock all the time? SPEAKTIME12.LHA in File
- 24784 runs as a Commodity on Workbench 2.04 or higher and has your Amiga speak
- the time whenever you press ALT-Z, or any other hotkey combination you
- specify.
-
- And while you're extending your Amiga's capabilities, try WBEXT.LHA in
- File 24755. This "Workbench Extension" can be dropped into your WBStartup
- drawer under AmigaOS 2.04 or higher. It will modify the Workbench titlebar
- display so that it shows free Chip memory, Fast memory, OS version, and
- chipset (OCS, ECS, AGA) used, plus the number of running tasks, libraries and
- active screens. It will even display the status of the serial and parallel
- ports. Lots of information in a tiny package!
-
- All this and more awaits you in the *StarShip* Library. And if you bump
- into Norman, tell him I said, "Hi." And above all, be supportive!

- been online for a long, long time. Why? They know a good thing when they see
- it! Where else can you improve your connectivity and productivity, and find
- someone whose specialty is in an area in which you are having problems?
-
- Online, that's where! And there's certainly no shortage of software and
- hardware developers in the Atari ST RoundTable here on GEnie.
-
-
-
- \\\ ST Product Support Considering the rapidly expanding CD-ROM market, we
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ are fortunate that Roger Burrows of Anodyne Software
- is a member of the ST RoundTable. Roger is the developer of ExtenDOS and
- ExtenDOS Pro, utilities that allow you to use a CD-ROM drive with your Atari
- computer. You may recall in a previous issue of LiveWire that I mentioned
- folks listening to CDs from their computers while typing in Aladdin, or
- working on a layout in Calamus. They have Anodyne Software to thank for that.
-
- GEnie is important to Roger and Anodyne. "Almost all of my business has
- come directly or indirectly through information on GEnie," Roger said
- recently. "It's also my main means of user support, both for upgrades and
- assistance."
-
- He went on to talk about his preference for Atari computers, pointing
- out that he develops only for the Atari platform and doesn't see that changing
- in the forseeable future. "The Atari platform has a number of advantages," he
- said, "including a pretty good GUI that is relatively easy to develop for,
- good development tools, and plenty of opportunities to develop unique
- products."
-
- You can always find Roger, and other knowledgeable types, in the ExtenDOS
- Topic (Topic 30, Category 2), as well as the many other CD-ROM topics on the
- ST RoundTable Bulletin Board. Related files of interest in the Atari Library
- include:

- \\\ The More the Merrier Another developer you'll find online is Keith
- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Gerdes of Trace Technologies. This company brings
- you Data Diet 2, Data Rescue, Squish II, Load Aladdin, FastPath, Falcon030
- Toolkit, and FlexMenu. In Keith's words, "GEnie has been an invaluable
- resource for me. On a daily basis for tech support I use GE Mail, Internet
- mail, and our RoundTable Topic. And I use the Bulletin Board Category and
- Software Library for beta testing purposes."
-
- Trace Technologies recently finished an online "Pre-release product
- testing" session on the Atari RoundTable for FlexMenu. They squashed bugs in
- distribution, documentation, and files. I asked Keith about this, and about
- his favorite products and he had this to say: "FlexMenu adds features and
- capabilities both to the one-task and multitasking GEM environments. Not only
- do you have instant access to a file launcher, but you also have system
- enhancements such as start-up tasks and a quick-access menu bar."
-
- Normally, you'll find Keith in the Trace Technologies Support Topic,
- (Bulletin Board Category 2, Topic 12). As an experienced, long-time Atari
- owner, he's all over the place and is always ready to assist Atari owners with
- problems and questions.
-
- I have found this propensity for generosity to be a rule rather than an
- exception when it comes to developers on the Atari RoundTable. They're just as
- willing to help with other products as they are to support their own. That
- makes for a close-knit community, something that simply can't be overstated.
- Your questions and problems will not go unassisted in the Atari RoundTable.
- You can count on it!

-
-
-
- \\\ Repair and Help The Apple II RoundTable also provides extensive advice
