- <f1><c000> Mainstream shock-horror!
- <f0> Atari paper-mags in Poland
- text: Saulot/Chosneck Team October'2002
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- I'm very proud that I can have the opportunity to write about these very
- interesting movements in my own Polish playground. In the Internet/CD-R/DVD
- era, we are almost completely forgetting about other "alternative information
- storage media" such as a simple, blank sheet of paper or DD disk ;)
-
- Maybe I will never accept the cutting down of trees or use of toilet paper
- (think for a while about how many trees go straight to the ass each day, world
- wide! Use s recycled one, but only in extreme cases! ;]) But I want to write
- about new polish Atari papermags. I was happy when I heard about them for the
- first time, because for a long time, we had no real Atari paper magazine.
- Germany has had it's "ST Computer" for a long time, England had all of these ST
- Floormats, ST Actions, ST Reviews, ST Gamers etc... but Poland?
-
- From the early nineties to the glorious 2K this situation stood - there wasn't
- anything very colourful. The existing computer magazines either completely
- ignored Atari platform, abandoned it or simply disoriented the general public
- by giving incorrect, incomplete or fictional hardware specifications, terrible
- reviews, comparison tests or simply nothing at all ("Bajtek" for example).
-
- I must tell you that the very first, serious Polish computer magazine, simply
- called "Komputer", had a whole layout styled on the Atari ST desktop. And some
- of the internal graphics were made with ST art packages!
-
- Prehistory:
-
- There were very few publications devoted only to Atari, they were:
-
- "STe fan" published by Atar system - the one (and only?) official Atari
- distributor in Poland(?). Some issues were supplied with dd
- disks.
-
- "ST fan" another magazine made by unknown people from Szczecin.
-
- These two were printed in black and white (only the cover was in
- colour). Only available in few (very few!) computer shops.
-
- "Tajemnice Atari" ("Atari secrets") mostly devoted to the xl/xe series, but
- some kind of ST forum existed, irregularly. (checkout:
- http://www.archiwum.ta.prv.pl - all issues online and content is
- also available in English!).
-
- "Moje Atari" (or "My Atari" for those not familiar with the Polish language)
- not regular, special issues of Bajtek magazine.
-
- "Atari magazyn" published bi-monthly (the publisher was the same as for
- "Bajtek", but with quite good content, its life ended shortly
- after the Jaguar arrived)
-
- "Swiat Atari" (or "Atari world") full colour (monthly, I guess) magazine for
- XL/XE/ST series, but not limited to those.
-
- All of these titles vanished completely from sight about nine years ago. But
- what now? Heh, here goes the best part.
-
- Do you remember the most vulgar graphician ever? Yes! Vulgar/Cobra (R.I.P) of
- course! He is mainly responsible for the very first publication. After years of
- nothing it deals with everything that bears the Fuji logo and it's clones. The
- mag is called "Atari fan" (all of these names are so weird! ;)). So far, two
- issues were published (each cost me 3 PLN, this is less than 1 EURO!). And
- moreover, they were published in 2000, so they are a bit outdated, but there
- are rumours that there will soon be a third issue. The reasons are very simple
- - the number of writers. Think about the main editors of diskmags, which
- experience the same obstacle. And now imagine yourself as a Polish editor
- writing a pure Atari papermag in Polish - the scale of the problem is much
- bigger!
-
- The mag itself is printed in black and white. It has an A5 format(the only one,
- ideal format for reading under the desk during boring lessons in school!) and
- has about 32 pages. And what can I say about the content... Everyone could find
- something for themselves (everyone that knows polish). There are new (now old)
- program descriptions; interviews; a large news section, information about
- interesting Atari sites on the Internet and articles about general use of Atari
- computers. There is also a place for our demoscene. Party reports, party
- invitations, various compo results, everything that every scener needs to know.
- In this most vulgar mag ever we can also read about 8-bitters and that they are
- very good. That means we can learn some 8-bit coding tricks, read about new
- productions and hear about strange eightbitters standardisation disputes.
-
- Gamers aren't left alone. Even if activity in this field isn't great, we can
- read about now dead or abandoned projects, the new releases (now old) with
- short descriptions and a place on the web where we can leech particular titles.
- But some of the links are not up-to-date (not only in games section, they are
- not accurate (ugly typos!). There was also something about the Jaguar and Lynx,
- but it was a solitary article about the future of these consoles (is there
- any?) - nothing less, nothing more. For serious programmers there is MiNT/MagiC
- shared library writing and a multi-threading course under MiNT by mega-mighty
- Draco. For hardware hackers there are the full instructions for installing a HD
- disk drive in your ST/STE with warm words of encouragement from Paskud. The
- last page of "Atari fan" is reserved for rare, weird Atari things that never
- saw the light of the day, such as MicroFalcon and Jaguar Duo. There is also a
- BUY/SELL/SWAP corner, but all ads are from the editors. The things that I liked
- a lot in this mag wer the nice layout and the articles are well illustrated
- with screenshots and graphics. One little annoying thing is the arrangement of
- the text on the page itself. I was searching for info sometime ago in the news
- section and I dug several times through both issues without positive results.
- Well, we are waiting for the third issue...
-
- The second mag is called "Atarynka" by Sikor-Soft. The name of this papermag is
- the Polish term in which we refer to our small, old 8-bit Atari. Three issues
- were released in 2002 so I have hope that main editor will keep up the regular
- release dates (something that is REALLY missing in Chosneck... - Grey I didn't
- say that! Put down the knife... No! Nooooooooooaaaaaaarrrrrrrggghhhh!).
-
- For a price of nearly 2 EUR, we have 36 pages with a full-colour cover
- depicting the usual icons of Atari-cult (you know grey boxes, blocky printers,
- fuji logos and less often people with strange facial expressions ;-) ). The
- kwy goal of the main editor was that everyone should find something for
- themself. The result is that a big part of magazine is "eaten up" by 8-bit and
- Jaguar articles. That doesn't mean that bigger Ataris are ignored totally.
- There are articles for them, but not to the extent of 8-bit ones. The truth is
- that 16/32 bit Ataris weren't that popular in Poland, opposed to their smaller
- cousins. Before "Atarynka" started there was some sort of voting poll on the
- Internet concerning a new Atari paper magazine. The results of this poll were
- presented in the first issue of "Atarynka", and it clearly indicated the
- majority were of XL/XE fans. Of 110 (what a thrashing response!) votes there
- were: 87 XL/XE owners, 46 ST/STE owners, 32 TT030 owners, 46 Falcon030 owners,
- 23 Portfolio owners, 24 Jaguar owners, 21 Lynx owners and 23 8-bit consoles
- freaks. Yes, in most cases people have several types of hardware. The poll also
- indicated that the owners of the ST/STE machines are far meaner than XL/XE
- users (There was a special entry called how much you can give for an issue; the
- ST/STE users were ready to give up to 5 PLN (about 1 EUR and something, but
- nothing more) and XL/XE ones were ready to give 10 PLN or above (2 EUR or
- more)). I don't know why, but these comments were very funny for me. Everything
- in this mag is so serious...
-
- The whole content is in black&white. The articles are marked accordingly to
- what Atari type they are dedicated. Everything is supplied with quality
- screenshots. When it comes to the graphical side, I must say that Vulgar has
- made a much better job. The interior of his mag is much nicer, more pleasant
- for the eye. Moreover, in "Atari fan", we can easily recognize the beginning
- and end of each article, which is impossible in Atarynka's case, because the
- font used in the header of each article isn't very big and everything melts
- into one (Try to find something now, but hey! There is a table of contents!).
-
- As in each highly rated Atari papermag, we have some words from main editor;
- a news sectiona latest updates of Atari programs (ripped from ST computer I
- think), a BUY/SELL/EXCHANGE section (very thin at this moment) and ,of course,
- the flesh and bones of every mag - articles. We can read about general use of
- 8/16/32 bit Atari computers; some party reports (Steszew, Lato ludzikow 4);
- hardware hacks (1mb RAM cart for XL/XE); Jag & Lynx games reviews, Atari pages
- on the WWW and learn some 8-bit made-in-Poland coding techniques (fast
- interpolations, new & better graphic modes). By the way, if someone is
- interested, I could translate some of articles to English if there is demand.
- Additionally, with the third issue of "Atarynka", we receive a disk with
- programs for XL/XE/ST/TT and Falcon030. For the XL/XE we receive releases from
- Lato Ludzikow 4 (ah, NUMEN). For the ST, there is a nice set of programs for
- transferring files between ST & XL/XE (the description of interface is in
- Atarynka #3); an Atari 800 emulator (without ROMs :/), CONVERT_PL - a Polish
- program for converting ASCII files to different character sets and some other
- not very brain-blasting things like a matrix calculating proggy, "Handlarz" -
- a text based game for ST-up and some others (everything written in Pascal,
- bleurgh!).
-
- The interesting thing is that "Atarynka"'s main editor is not focused only on
- his papermag, but he also wants to publish new software. He mainly supports
- the XL/XE series (Teacher Killer rocks!), but he is opened for other proposals.
- For example, he is now seeking programmers that could write a new text editor
- for ST/TT/FALCON (Inkaust isn't good enough anymore?). So, if you feel hooked,
