- <f1><c000> A QUICK GUIDE
- TO PARALLEL COPYING
- <f0> ParCP 3.90 by Petr Stehlik
-
- review: Saulot/Chosneck Team December'2002
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- Do you remember good old and slow Ghostlink? Yes? So you can forget about it
- right now, because there is something much better now -PARCP. The name of this
- program is a shortened form of <link=g50.scr>PARallel CoPy</l> and as the name indicates itÆs a
- tool for transferring files from one computer to another. PARCP currently
- supports Atari and PC platforms, but there is possible Amiga support. For now
- you can link two computers: Atari-Atari, PC- PC or ATARI-PC, to transfer files
- between them. To be able to do anything you must have: parallel ports in both
- computers, a special PARCP cable and, of course, PARCP 3.90 package. Things are
- a little complicated if you have a PC without a bidirectional parallel port
- (that is likely in *VERY* old models), because you have to build a special
- interface. There is a special program for PC that detects and configures
- everything for you (PARCFG.EXE), so don't be afraid. There are two ways to
- obtain a cable: simply buy one from the author of PARCP, or make it by
- yourself. Making a cable is really easy, because you simply have to buy a
- printer cable with canon DB25 male connectors, cut off wires 10, 12, 13, 14,
- 15 and 16 on both connectors and exchange the wires 1 and 11 on one connector.
- PARCP is based on the CLIENT-SERVER idea. You have to decide which computer
- will be the CLIENT and which will be the SERVER. After connecting two machines,
- you launch PAR_IN.PRG (or PAR_IN.EXE) to switch parallel port into safe mode.
- After that you can run PARCP.TTP (or PARCP.EXE) on your SERVER with "-s" switch
- or alternatively PARSERVE.TOS (PARSERVE.EXE on PCs) and PARCP.TTP (PARCP.EXE)
- on your CLIENT machine.
-
- If everything went well, you will be presented with the Norton Commander
- environment on your CLIENT. Now you can do what you like. The one window is
- for your SERVER, the second for your CLIENT. You can jump between the windows
- with TAB and mark objects with SPACE. The function keys are responsible for
- standard file system functions. If you don't like Norton then you can use PARCP
- CLI environment which is very similar to unix ftp clients (the commands are
- similar or even the same).
-
- Now I want to tell about the advantages of PARCP over GHOSTLINK. It's
- ultra-fast. I connected my Falcon030 (server) (there are two versions of PARCP
- for M68000 and for M68030) with 520STE (client) and feeling was like my STE
- had second hdd! Moreover PARCP recognizes correctly MiNT and MagiC environment,
- is multitasking-friendly and can use long filenames which GHOSTLINK couldn't
- dream of. But the most interesting thing is that you can connect two Ataris and
- swap files between them without discothΦque or another disk juggling :)!
-
- PARCP is a shareware program and is limited a little. For example the number of
- directory entries is limited to 10, there is no possibility to use scripts and
- special archive mode is disabled. The cost of registering is a reasonable (20
- EUR or 20 USD). Leech it, try it, register it! If there are enough
- registrations then there will be one beautiful day when we receive a more user
- friendly GEM environment and more improvements.
