- <f1><c000> Ladies and Gentlemen
- Mint is EASY !!!!
- <f0> by Saulot (Chosneck Team) July 2002
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- A long time ago I tried to go <link=g49.scr>MINT</l>. Multitasking, MintNET, Unix enviroment,
- GNU C, C++ was very tempting. I visited the FreeMINT Portal (www.freemint.de),
- but I was a little disoriented (rpms, rpms, rpms, I want normal ZIP !!!! ;) ).
- There was a lot of strange things there, but I wasn't able to figure out what
- was needed and what wasn't. As soon as I started to mess around I realized that
- it's difficult or even impossible for me to install it. Especially when I was a
- total newbie to this stuff. Some kind souls gave me advice to leech the KGMD
- distribution. It wasn't working very well (it wasn't working at all). I was
- frustrated, ill and certainly for me the adventure with MINT came to an end.
-
- Later when browsing the Web, I spotted that Mr. Kehr had made a brand new Mint
- installation package called EasyMiNT. It wasn't given to the general public (at
- this time), but I contacted the author and he gave me the url of the place to
- download it. To remaind you Mr. Kehr has made the earlier NAESCAR - a nice
- configuration tool for NAES, MintNET for lamers package(self explanatory he,he)
- and some other tools and docs. But, to the point. I downloaded it, set it up,
- and sat down amazed. All I can say that the whole installation is a piece of
- cake now!
-
- Let's speak about system requirements. You need an Atari machine (or clone),
- lots of RAM (it is possible to launch MiNT on 4mb machines, but I warn you that
- you will be very LIMITED), modern AES (N_AES(commercial), XAAES(free) or old
- Atari's AES 4.01(free?)), lots of hard disk space (it depends what packages you
- want to install, it varies from 10MB to 500MB, but 1GB is better :]), LNX or
- RAW partition (you must have a decent disk driver like HDDRIVER which supports
- these partition types). WOW! This was shock number one, but let's prepare for
- shock number two... The whole EasyMiNT package is ENORMOUS! (for our Atari
- standards of course! :]). So, leeching it through a slow modem at home isn't
- a very smart solution. Better to iCafe, pay some money, burn all the stuff on
- CD-ROM. The whole installation is something like about 160 MB. It isn't
- necessary to download all the components, you should decide what you need and,
- most importantly, how much you will be able to install ;). One piece of advice
- on this matter - think sensibly!
-
-
- So, what files are essential? There are several files that are mandatory:
- ===============================================================================
-
- - easymint.zip - 1.2mb
- (main installation package, contains various mint kernels, tools, etc..)
-
- - em_xxxx.zip - 110kb
- (current installer - "xxxx" stands for version number, docs, resource files)
-
- - lst.zip - 2kb
- (contains lists of rpm packages contained in particular TAR archives)
-
- - rootfs.tgz - 1.2mb
- (basic structure of Unix filesystem)
-
- - basic.tar - 5mb
- (needed for minimal installation)
-
-
- ====== And (hope)fully optional================================================
-
- - standard.tar - 17mb (standard means standard)
- - net.tar - 9mb (for network, MintNET, multiuser support)
- - devel.tar - 22mb (package for developers: many compilers, docs, etc.)
- - libs.tar - 13mb (useful and not useful libraries)
- - x11.tar - 87mb (x11 server -it even works! :)))) )
-
-
- If you have all of these you can begin installation. Read the doc first inside
- the em_xxxx.zip archive. You must recreate the identical structure of the
- folders before, as stated in the IMPORTANT.TXT, or you will risk a big waste of
- time. And don't forget to make a LNX or RAW partition on your hd! Anyway, after
- performing these few steps, you are ready to launch EASYMiNT.PRG (there are
- several language files, so you can change to one you prefer - german sucks!).
- Some unaccelerated Falcon users should also change the resolution to fewer
- colours (it speeds installation a lot and prevents from choking the scsi disks
- during install which pains!). It's also very important to run from a "clean"
- machine, without any programs in memory, to avoid any possible surprises in
- future. For example, I renamed my existing AUTO folder and rebooted machine.
-
- After launching the PRG file you are welcomed by a friendly gem dialog box
- (in opposition to KGMD). The program asks about the type of your machine, boot
- drive, searches for available LNX and RAW partitions and let's you choose the
- one where you want install the ext2 filesystem. After that, it depacks the
- easymint.zip archive, copies the suitable Mint kernel and reorders the AUTO
- folder so the kernel launches first, backups mint folder (if it exists), makes
- changes to desktop.inf and performs a RESET. If everything goes good, the mint
- kernel should run from the auto and easymint should run itself. If not, run it
- manually from the desktop.
-
- After that, you are asked, if you are sure that you want create the ext2
- filesystem on the partition you indicated earlier. (think FIVEFOLD or even
- TENFOLD, this thing will massacre ALL data on this partition!). Next will be a
- dialog box with a list of available components. If you setted everything in the
- right way, you will be able to tick the boxes near the components name. You can
- also choose a root file system check which is essential if the system will
- crash or will not be shut down properly, MiCo dialer and nice Shutdown program.
- After clicking OK you can go to the bar for a beer, or better ten beers(it also
- depends on the machine you possess ;) slower machine = more drunk you will be
- =))) ), because all the dirty things are left for EasyMiNT. In the meantime,
- you're asked about your local timezone, the place where your NAES or XAAES is
- located and about how the system will launch (simple login or start AES on the
- beggining, paths for AES etc.). If everything went well, you receive a dialog
- box with a word of advice and then an automatic reboot.
-
- Now comes the time for the moment of TRUTH. If something isn't working well and
- during the EasyMiNT installation you received error messages, then you should
- perform the installation again from the beggining (sad, but true). EasyMiNT
- stores the whole info about the performed installation in the TMP subfolder, so
- if something went wrong you will read about it in files with *.ERR extension.
- To perform the whole installation from the very begginng you have to wipe out
- TMP folder, remove the MINT folder from the boot drive and the MiNT kernel from
- AUTO. The one good thing is that when you install one package, you are able to
- install the following packages after running easymint.prg from MiNT, without
- going through a very looooong and boring installation process. The packages are
- dependant on each other, so you are not able to install the STANDARD package
- without the BASIC one. One feature could make EasyMiNT even better. During
- installation, when even one error occurs while installing rpms, EasyMiNT could
- end installation and wipeout the info from the TMP subfolder, so the package
- could be installed next time without any hassle(reboot, delete, reboot...). For
- now, EasyMiNT goes on, even if any error occurs which is too bad, because if
- even one rpm isn't installed or is missing, results in errors while installing
- the next packages(if you decide to install all in one go for example -you will
- eat your hat from frustration).
-
- Anyway, I would like to recommend it to everyone (especially newbies).
- Everything needed is in ready-to-use packages, waiting to be installed. There
- are several things which this software won't do for you - it won't configure
- your AES and MiNTNET. But that's another tale...
