- <f1><c000> 6502 MIRACLES of 8-BIT ATARI <f0>
- long and twisted way to recover deserved respect
- short report by grey / msb
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- I am writing this article at the end of September 2002 ... 15 years have passed
- since I received the Holy Grail in the form of an Atari 65XE from my parents.
- Lovely times... Unforgotten nights spent on playing River Ride, Boulder Dash,
- Moon Patrol, Pitstop ... and many other games loaded from the humble tape
- recorder... Ah, it's all written in the book of my youth ... This many years is
- a long time in the history of computing. No-one could imagine that such an old
- computer would survive till now, even in our dreams ....
-
- However the book of my youth is still open. This little grey box isn't hidden
- somewhere in the cellar and isn't gathering dust. It's still alive and earns
- more and more respect each day. That's almost unknown in the computing industry
- Something that should only be a sweet memory from a long time ago - is still
- amongst us! And treads on bigger brothers heels, just like the ST series. Thats
- an excellent proof that there is still a lot in the ST or Falcon world to
- discover. If such a "classic" (in delicate words) machine as the 8-bit Atari is
- still such a big spectrum of possibilities, then the ST and Falcon are a huge
- MINE waiting to be extracted. Could the ST or Falcon survive as long as the
- 8-bit Atari? Well, just keep in mind that the 8-bit Atari community has been
- active a while. After laughs, written bullshit in various paper-mags concerning
- their beloved computer they never gave up. Even more - they did their best to
- prove the others are wrong! Yes, they drew motivation from their opponents.
- More criticism just brought more benefit. Something unheard of in the
- ST / Falcon scene where any kind of criticism is an excellent reason to stop
- all activities...
-
- After the years of no respect this little grey box became one of the most
- respected 8-bit machine on the demo scene. It went a very long and twisted way,
- but ... it was worth it, no doubt. And all thanks to the users who ignored the
- ironic jokes about the 8-bit Atari, especially from the "kindly" C-64 and
- Speccy folks ...... They simply did their best to prove what this machine is
- REALLY capable of! Nowadays the 8-bit Atari can display pics in 256 colors,
- play modules, demos feature various 3D objects unseen on ST or STe ... Laughs
- all over, respect was due!
-
- ST and Falcon sceners: PULL YOUR SOCKS UP! Open yourself up for some new
- possibilities. Don't cry that something doesn't work on your 4mb machine. Just
- upgrade it! It's simply funny when someone spoils his PC buying new graphic or
- music cards but can't find some money to expand the memory in their Falcon.
- That's a shame, folks ... I don't know anyone from the 8-bit Atari scene who
- complains that any demo doesn't work on his 64KB machine! Change your way of
- thinking, don't stand in the same place please. I don't have enough money to
- become a lucky CT60 user for example, but I have nothing against demos released
- esp. for upgraded Falcons!
-
- Maybe this article will motivate you all to continue your work! There is still
- a lot to do. Don't give up, you have nothing to lose. I cross my fingers and
- hope to somedaythe article titled "68000 miracles of the ST" or "68030 miracles
- of the Falcon" written by someone few years later...
-
- Put some life back into the ST / Falcon scene!
