- or "mission impossible"?!

- "Doom on the Atari is becoming more likely by the minute. A new game engine,
- Bad Mood, enables Falcon owners to roam around Doom, Doom 2 or Heretic levels.
- At the moment none of the walls are shaded and there are no objects or monsters
- to interact with, but Bad Mood is proof that Doom may yet become a reality on
- the Falcon".
-
- That was the exclusive news from 79th issue of ST Format in 1996. Many people
- were simply shocked reading such news - this legendary PC game, the reason of
- pride for many PC bastards - finally comes to the Falcon, Atari system! Most
- people said: yeah! it shows that Falcon is really a powerful machine and even
- the standard configuration is able to handle it. So there was no surprise when
- Doom was ported to the 64-bit Jaguar as well.
-
- But what would you say about Doom for... the ZX Spectrum? =)) Nope, it isn't a
- silly joke, and I didn't drink anything that usually makes ppl happy a short
- after ;) Just imagine - this fuckin' pride of PC owners went to the vacuum ;)
-
- Currently three versions of Doom have been released for the Speccy: "Citadel"
- (demo version - you can only walk, no enemies, game window fills 1/4 part of
- the screen), "Doom" (demo version as well, details as before) and the most
- serious one - "Doom pre-release 1.5" which I would like to review. All games
- mentioned here (maybe there are more, i am not up-to-date with Speccy releases)
- have been created by people from Russia (Putin f*ck out!). Speccy scene in this
- country is quite large. They managed to produce their own Speccy-clones, just
- like "Pentagon" or "Scorpion". There is no big difference between original
- hardware and clones (eg. ROM, more RAM etc), standard equiped in floppy-drive
- working in TR-DOS. All software written in Russia is dedicated to these
- machines.
-
- Let's back to the topic. Speccy version has been created by Digital Reality
- and Hyper Soft groups. The mentioned pre-release contains 1 level with enemies
- many kinds of weapon etc. But the most important things are the quality of the
- graphics and animations. I have to admit it isn't THAT bad. Game window can
- fill 1/4 part of the screen and everything works in b/w colours or full-screen
- (Speccy res: 256x192/16col) so it's quite colourful. Animation isn't very
- smooth (it jumps a bit) but it's okay. The one level which game contains has
- textured walls and floors. Ceiling doesn't exist 'coz the action is happening
- outside ;) All the enemies are ripped off from original "Doom" (btw - almost
- everything has been ported from PC version). The map is also available, as well
- as Save and Load options. During the game you can listen to the music, it lacks
- sound-effects however authors promise to do it in the future.
-
- Meantime we give you a chance to watch the pictures from this game! If you find
- it any interesting we will continue to write about retro-machines in the future
-
- Special thanx to PopoCop/RetroActive for help in writing this article!
